2 Tajikistan at a Glance Tajikistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia with a population of 8.3 million (2015); The total area of the country is thousand sq. km, out of which 93% is covered by mountains around 75% of the population live in rural areas; it is a lower middle income country with the per capita income of USD 1100 (2014); more than 60 % of the region s water resources originate in the glaciers of Tajikistan; the highest and the lowest air temperatures are prevalent here (lowest: -63 С; highest +47 С); Climate Change Impact Tajikistan is highly vulnerable to adverse effects of climate change; Tajikistan is also exposed to a range of climate-related hazards; The glaciers cover reduced from 6% to 4.8% of the land area of Tajikistan; Annual losses from climate-induced extreme weather events are estimated to be around US $600 million, or 4.8% of GDP; 2

3 Climate Change Impact ( 2) Climate change projections indicate higher air temperatures, reduced snowfall and an increased frequency of extreme meteorological events; Glacial areas are projected to decline by 15-20% compared to the current level; C Average annual temperature scenario Pamir-Alay mountain and glacier zone PPCR in Tajikistan Tajikistan was included as a pilot country in 2009; Following sectors were identified as particularly vulnerable to climate change: agriculture, water resources, energy, environment and disaster risk management; PPCR in Tajikistan is composed of two phases and is being administered by three MDBs: ADB, EBRD and the WB; Phase 2: Impleme ntation Phase 1 & 2 overlap Phase 1: Support for developin g SPCR & readiness 3
