5 Contributions to Sustainable Development in the Danube Region The Danube Region shall serve as a best-practice example for linking European strategies and policies for a sustainable use of soil natural and social resources the capabilities for the future of rural areas a sustainable economy and of a responsible acting on the regional and local levels. 7 Soil Protection & Awareness Raising Soil protection and sustainable land use linked to water quality issues, to soil quality and soil degradation processes (area-wide soil protection) The following aspects shall be addressed: Soil erosion, Carbon storage Evaluation of soil functions and services Testing the feasibility of proposed EU strategies Build-up of a common database and a soil map

9 Sustainability / Social Production Social Production : Creation of Value through Appreciation Cooperations between enterprises, the public sector and social institutions create sustainable products and services: from the region for the region! Visions: offers a sustainable and desirable way of economy Clear production processes are handled in the region Enterprises use company waste in an innovative, creativ, value creating way

10 Goals: Rural Development Information platform about projects fostering the development of rural areas on the regional level Building-up and deepening of international contacts as intended by the EU Strategy for Danube Region Strengthening of existing networks in the Danube region, which are concerned with issues affecting the rural areas Danube Environment Forum 2013, Tulcea/Romania

11 Rural Development Content alignment Projects strengthening the awareness of rural areas shall be disseminated by the working group Projects shall focus on sustainable development of rural areas Example: landscape planning and landscape designing Planning attractive and diverse cultural landscapes by Example: architecture in rural areas Renovation of traditional lanes of wine cellars
