3 Alabama Beef Cattle Improvement Association 40 County Road 756 Clanton, AL Dear Cattlemen Hello and welcome. Within this sale catalog, you be able to review the detailed performance information and data for the bulls offered in the 22 nd Annual Alabama BCIA Fall Round Up Bull Sale. This sale event will be held on Friday, November 10 at 1200 Noon at the Alabama Livestock Auction in Uniontown, Alabama. Bull selection is a very important building block of the genetics in your beef cattle operation. Making informed, sound herd bull selections makes a significant impact on the potential genetic and production level of your herd. The genetic impact of a herd sire is greatly increased when selecting replacement heifers from your herd. After 10 years, approximately 88% of the genetic makeup of a herd will have come from herd bulls selected. Therefore, the value of detailed performance data in bull selection is crucial. Part of Alabama BCIA s mission is to promote, educate and facilitate the use of performance data within the beef industry. Therefore, definitions and values of genetic selection tools such as Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) and multi-trait selection indexes are fully provided for you in our sale catalogs. Current breed average EPD values for a variety of traits are published for each breed participating in a marketing event to inform and guide beef producers in selection of the bulls offered. Production performance in birth and weaning weights and ratios are provided. Guidelines for the care of newly purchased bulls are supplied to serve as a guide for proper care to ensure that each newly purchased bull has a productive future. Guides for planning for your breeding season to account for how many breeding bulls are needed to successfully breed your cows and heifers is also provided for you. All bulls offered in this sale event have passed a recent breeding soundness exam. Scrotal circumference measurements and current weights are documented. All bulls offered in this sale event have been tested and determined test negative for Trichomoniasis within 60 days of this sale date. Trichomoniasis is a bovine venereal disease that can cause substantial reproductive and economic loss in cow-calf operations using natural service. This disease is commonly referred to as Trich. An Alabama Cooperative Extension System educational publication is included for you in the back of this catalog to learn more about this disease. Establish a working relationship with your veterinarian to implement a complete herd health program. Please contact myself or any of the sale consignors if you have questions regarding the 2017 Alabama BCIA Fall Round Up Bull Sale and its offering. We would be happy to assist you. Sincerely, Michelle F. Elmore Extension Animal Scientist/Beef Cattle Improvement Office Phone (205) , Cell (205) , elmormf@auburn.edu Alabama BCIA s mission is to promote, educate and facilitate the use of performance data, record keeping and marketing opportunities for BCIA members while providing a leadership role to improve the Alabama cattle industry.

4 Explanation of EPDs and Reference Information EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPD) The expected difference in performance of a bull's progeny when compared to the average progeny performance of all bulls evaluated. EPD's are reported in pounds and are directly comparable across all herds within a breed, but not across breeds. ACCURACY (ACC) A measure of certainty regarding the genetic merit of a bull. Accuracies are reported as a decimal number between zero and one. Larger values indicate greater accuracy and more certainty that a bull's EPD values will not change with additional progeny information. CALVING EASE DIRECT (CE) Predicts the ease with which a bull s calves are born to first calf heifers. EPD values for calving ease are reported as deviations in the percent of unassisted births. When comparing calving ease EPD values of two sires, the larger EPD value indicates a higher percentage of unassisted births for calves sired by this bull. MATERNAL CALVING EASE (MCE) The ease with which a bull s daughter s calves as first calf heifers. EPD values for maternal calving ease are reported as deviations in the percent of unassisted births. When comparing maternal calving ease EPD values of two sires, the larger EPD value indicates a higher percentage of unassisted births for calves born out of this sire s daughters. BIRTH WEIGHT EPD (BW) Predicts the difference in average birth weight of a bull s calves compared to calves of all other bulls evaluated. Compare the bull s EPD to the breed average to determine when he is above or below average for birth weight EPD for his breed. If the birth weight is higher than breed average, he will sire heavier calves at birth than the breed average. WEANING WEIGHT EPD (WW) Weaning weight EPD predicts the difference in average adjusted 205-day weight of a bull's calves compared to calves of all other bulls evaluated. MILK EPD Maternal (Pure Milk) EPD predicts the difference in average 205 day weight of a bull s daughters calves (due to differences in milking ability) compared to calves of all other bulls evaluated. Note, this is pounds of calf weaning weight and not pounds of milk. YEARLING WEIGHT EPD (YW) Yearling weight EPD predicts the difference in average adjusted 365-day weight of a bull's progeny compared to progeny of all other bulls evaluated. CARCASS WEIGHT EPD (CW) Carcass weight is a good predictor of total retail product, but not percent retail product. Selecting sires with higher EPD values for carcass weight will result in progeny carcasses with more total retail product at a constant fat and age endpoint. The industry target weight range for carcasses is 650 to 850 pounds. MARBLING EPD The marbling EPD can be used to select sires that will produce progeny with more marbling at a constant fat or age endpoint. Intramuscular marbling contributes to the overall eating experience of beef. end point. RIBEYE AREA EPD (REA) expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of progeny at a given FAT THICKNESS EPD (FAT) Expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. All published EPD values are current as of the printing of this catalog. Page 1 YIELD GRADE EPD (YG) An estimate of the yield of closely trimmed, boneless retail cuts from the round, loin, rib and chuck. YG EPD is expressed as a deviation. Negative values are desirable. To use it, one must keep in mind that it is in yield grade units. Therefore, lower is better. WEANED CALF VALUE ($W), an Angus index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. Angus breed average FEEDLOT VALUE ($F), an Angus index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. Angus breed average GRID VALUE ($G), an Angus index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. Angus breed average BEEF VALUE ($B), an Angus index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. Angus breed average inal Sire Index (TSI) The Charolais inal Sire Index (TSI) combines EPDs BWT, WWT, YWT, REA, HCW, MARB & FAT into one single value on which to base selection decisions. The TSI uses estimates of the genetic relationships between traits with an economic default value based on three year rolling USDA data. The TSI represents a dollar index per terminal progeny produced for a Charolais bull, ranking them for profit potential. Charolais Average API. The All Purpose Index evaluates Simmental sires being used on the entire cowherd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with a portion of their daughters being retained for breeding and the steers and remaining heifers being put on feed and sold grade and yield. All EPDs, with the exception of tenderness, are taken into consideration in this index. Averages-Purebred ; Hybrid TI. The inal Index is designed for evaluating Simmental sires economic merit in situations where they are bred to mature Angus cows and all offspring are placed in the feedlot and sold grade and yield. Consequently, maternal traits such as milk, stayability and maternal calving ease are not considered in the index. Averages-Purebred 68.50; Hybrid

5 Explanation of EPDs and Reference Information Average EPD Values for Non-Parent Bulls from 2017 Breed Sire Summaries Breed CED CEM Birth Wt. Weaning Wt. Yearling Wt. Milk Cwt Marb REA Fat YG Angus Charolais Purebred Simmental Hybrid Simmental Whatever system your bull has been evaluated in, young bulls do require an adjustment period prior to being used for breeding. This is referred by some as a hardening period. Others refer to it as a let down period. Young bulls, especially those of breeding age, do require attention for continued growth and proper development. Regardless if they are home raised or newly purchased, proper feeding, care and management now will give your bull the opportunity to continue growing and allow him to develop into a sound and profitable herd sire. Several management practices should be observed when newly purchased bulls are brought home. These practices can help ensure that each new bull has a long and productive future with good productive performance. Have an area with fresh water and good quality hay to keep the bull(s) in upon arrival, so they will have time to settle down and become familiar with the surroundings. After allowing to drink water and eat hay, you may feed additional energy at approximately 1 percent of body weight If you are planning to turn the bull(s) out with the cow herd upon arrival, bring the herd to a holding area and allow the bull(s) to return to the pasture with the herd. Avoid turning your newly purchased bull(s) in with an older bull. We must reduce the chance of injury. Consider limiting the number of females you want to settle during the breeding season to 20 the first year. Avoid excessive loss of body condition before or during the breeding season. You may want to rest him for 1 to 2 weeks depending on the breeding activity of your herd. If necessary, feed him additional energy if excessive loss in body flesh condition is noticeable. Hay and/or pasture alone will not provide sufficient nutrients to meet the requirements of young, growing, active bull(s). If there is one bull in the pasture, as he breeds the cows, record the breeding date. Non-return to heat is a good indication your bull is settling the cows. Treat for internal parasites at the end of the breeding season. Provide effective external parasite control as needed. Remember, bulls are guaranteed by consignors to be breeders only if they are managed correctly after the sale. Young bulls should be limited to a minimum number of cows to service. The number is decided by his age. The following guidelines can be used Bull s Age Number of Females months 10 to months 12 to months 18 to months and older 25 to 35 Place young bulls in well fenced lots before and after breeding season to keep bulls away from cows in heat. There should be shade and plenty of clean water in each lot. Provide freechoice minerals and routinely treat for parasites. The genetic defect status of animals to be sold in BCIA sales have been verified with the respective breed association by the sale coordinator. Any known carriers or potential carriers of a genetic defect are noted by announcement in the sale catalog. Any updates will be posted by a sale supplement sheet or vocally from the sale block for full disclosure of any known genetic defect. Please, therefore, take note all animals published in this catalog are free of any known genetic defects at the time of publication unless noted as known carrier or potential carrier. Note Regarding Trichomoniasis Please take note that ALL bulls in this sale, both virgin and nonvirgin, have been tested and determined test negative for Trichomoniasis within 60 days of the sale date by an accredited laboratory, as per the guidelines of this sale. 34 A l a b a m a A & M a n d A u b u r n U n i v e r s i t i e s Bovine Trichomoniasis ANR-1333 Trichomoniasis is a bovine venereal disease that can cause substantial reproductive and economic loss in cow-calf operations that use natural service. The disease is caused by the protozoan Tritrichomonas foetus (T. foetus) and is commonly referred to as Trich. Bulls can become chronic, asymptomatic carriers of T. foetus because the organism can live in the microscopic folds of a bull s penis and prepuce. Infections in cows, however, can result in early embryonic death, abortion, pyometra (pus-filled uterus detected at pregnancy examination), or infertility, influencing the reproductive performance and economic profitability of a cow-calf operation. How Does Trichomoniasis Affect a Cattle Herd? Some indications that your herd may be experiencing a problem with trichomoniasis Repeated breeding that results in long, drawn-out breeding and calving seasons. A high percentage of open cows at pregnancy examination, or detection of a wide range of gestational ages. Most embryonic/ fetal losses occur during the first trimester; late term abortions are not common with trichomoniasis. Therefore, most reproductive losses are detected during pregnancy examination or the calving season. Pyometra(s) detected at pregnancy examination; this typically occurs in less than 5 percent of animals. Bulls show no clinical signs but can become chronic carriers. Cows and heifers will rarely show a very mild vaginal discharge, but this is usually never noticed. Therefore, like the bull, there are typically no initial clinical signs that a cow or heifer is infected with T. foetus. Cows and heifers can usually clear the infection in 2 to 6 months (sometimes longer), but usually not before sustaining some type of reproductive loss. With so few noticeable clinical signs of trichomoniasis, it is important to view a herd s overall reproductive performance to look for any indication of a problem. Trichomoniasis should be suspected, along with many other culprits, anytime herd reproductive performance declines in a natural service herd. In herds with new infections, the results can be devastating, with a long, drawn-out calving season and only a 50 to 70 percent calf crop. In herds where trichomoniasis has gone undetected for a long time, the results may be less dramatic because of temporary herd immunity. In such cases, the calf crop may only be reduced 5 to 10 percent; however, this loss is still enough to have a substantial economic impact. Economic Impact The economic impact of trichomoniasis is primarily due to three factors Loss of calf crop due to early embryonic loss or abortion Loss of income due to lighter weaning weights resulting from delayed conception and late calving (since calves are born later in the season and then sold at lighter weights) Culling of open cows and infected bulls, and the costs associated with replacing valuable breeding stock

35 Risk Factors Associated With Trichomoniasis Some factors that put a herd at risk for acquiring and maintaining trichomoniasis Natural service Using leased or borrowed bulls, or introducing any non-virgin bulls into a herd without prior testing Large herd size (smaller herd size decreases exposure potential) Transmission Tritrichomonas foetus is transmitted when an infected bull breeds a susceptible cow or heifer, or when a susceptible bull breeds an infected cow or heifer. Very rarely is T. foetus ever transmitted by contaminated semen or artificial insemination (AI) equipment, especially if semen is purchased from reputable AI studs and used with hygienic AI techniques. Reputable AI studs have strict biosecurity and quality control measures in place to ensure that their bull semen is not contaminated with T. foetus. So, AI using hygienic techniques with bull semen from a reputable source is an excellent way to prevent the introduction of T. foetus. However, AI may not be practical in larger herds. Treatment Trichomoniasis is usually selflimiting in cows and heifers (they will usually clear the infection in 2 to 6 months), as opposed to bulls that typically become chronically infected. Unfortunately, one of the complicating factors associated with trichomoniasis is that there are currently no effective treatments with Food and Drug Administration approval. Therefore, infected bulls must be culled. Prevention of Trichomoniasis Some recommended practices to prevent the introduction of T. foetus into a cattle herd include Utilize artificial insemination. Have your veterinarian test new non-virgin bulls at least once, along with a breeding soundness evaluation. This includes leased and borrowed bulls. Purchase replacement animals from reputable sources, and test appropriate animals prior to introducing them to the herd. Talk to your regional Animal Science and Forages Extension agent and your veterinarian about trichomoniasis. If you suspect trichomoniasis in your herd, contact your veterinarian for a thorough investigation. ANR-1333 Soren P.
