From January 2008 to April 2008:- Senior Researcher, Center for Development Research (ZEF), University of Bonn, Germany Reviewing literature on avoided deforestation as a means of combating carbon emissions. Based on the review, develop a theoretically sound framework that would further discussion on the inclusion of avoided deforestation in the mainstream debate for mitigating carbon emission. Analyzing economics of forest conservation and local community satisfaction with, different forest management approaches of Kakamega forest, Kenya. Outputs: PhD thesis (published as a book), conference papers & posters, journal articles May-July 2004: - Research assistant, Resource Management and policy Analysis Institute (REMPAI), Nairobi Preparing an inventory of research work undertaken in agricultural/rural sector in Kenya between for the World Bank-Kenya. It involved an extensive review of literature in all areas of agriculture and rural development undertaken by different local and international research and academic institutions for the period and identifying research gaps. The overall aim was to shed light on neglected research areas for possible future funding by the World Bank. September, April 2004:- Research assistant, Kenya Institute of Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA), Nairobi Analyzing how farmers coped with price variability and volatility of major crops in Kenya. The study was carried out in two provinces; Eastern and Western. The overall aim was to analyse farmer s response to price variability and volatility since price liberalization for major crops and identify strategies that they adopted for dealing with this phenomenon. August February 2003:- Research assistant, International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), Nairobi, Kenya Analyzing how farmers allocated their labour in Banana production with special reference to IPM work in southern Uganda. The basic idea of this research was to analyse labor allocation patterns of banana producing farmers with special emphasis on time they allocate to integrated pest management related activities. 3
4 July-August 2003:- Research assistant, Dept. of Agricultural Economics, University of Nairobi Carrying out a comparative ex-ante economic impact assessment for deployment of groundnut rosette resistance for groundnuts in Malawi. Three breeding methods were compared; conventional breeding, marker-assisted breeding and transgenics. CONSULTING EXPERIENCE January 2010 to February 2010: Co-Consultant, World Bank, Environment Department, Washington DC. Task: - To evaluate the Institutions-Centred Strategic Environmental Assessment (I- SEA) of Kenya s Forest Sector Reforms June 2009 to March 2010: Research Consultant, Institution of Surveyors of Kenya (ISK) Task: - conduct a research on the link between Land use policies and natural resource management in Kenya using the case of the Nairobi River Basin. March-April 2009:- Co-consultant, PICO TEAM-Kenya Task: -Contribute towards an intervention strategy paper for the Bill and Melinda Foundation on livestock genetic intervention for small holders farmers in Africa. The assignment was done through economic analysis of several genetic intervention strategies February-April 2009:- Co-consultant, Sahara & Sahel Observatory (OSS) of the IGAD Task: - Mapping, assessing and analyzing socio-economic data & information on the management of Water resources in Kenya May 2008:- Consultant, National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) : To review NEMA s operational and training manuals on Economic instruments for environmental management. The overall aim of the consultancy was to critically review the manuals and assess their suitability for enhancing better environmental management in the country. 4
