6 Wheat Quality Council Participation Philippines and Indonesia were invited to review samples and present results at the PNW Wheat Quality Council meeting in 2016 Japanese and Korean Millers were invited to the PNW Wheat Quality Council Meeting in This exchange provides input from the overseas market into PNW wheat breeding. 7 Technical Exchange Conferences in the United States SW in Pullman, Washington HRS in Fargo, North Dakota SRW in Wooster, Ohio HRW in Hays, Kansas Growers, wheat breeders, grain handlers and overseas buyers had an open discussion about wheat quality and other supply chain issues. Overseas buyers presented information on their markets and what quality characteristics were important. (Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Nigeria, Israel) 1. PPO color stability 2. 9 Wheat Quality Improvement Team to Asia (continued) Dr. Michael Pumphrey is the Orville Vogel Endowed Chair of spring wheat breeding and genetics as an associate professor at Washington State University, where he has worked since He was previously a Research Geneticist employed by the USDA's Agricultural Research Service at Kansas State University. Dr. Phil Bruckner is a winter wheat breeder and Professor in the Plant Sciences & Plant Pathology Department at Montana State University. Phil obtained B.S. and M.S. degrees at Montana State University and a Ph.D. in 1985 from North Dakota State University. Phil served as small grain breeder at the University of Georgia Coastal Plains Experiment Station from 1985 to 1992, before moving to Montana State University in Robert Talley manages the Hybrid Wheat Development team at AgriPro/Syngenta. Bobby earned a B.A. from Colorado State in Soil and Crop Sciences. Prior to his current position, he was with Busch Agricultural Resources where he began working on the International Barley Research and Germ Plasm Exchange. He managed that program for five years before transitioning to Location and Trailing Manager from

10 Preferred Variety Lists by the state wheat commissions Where the seed hits the soil PNW (WA, OR and ID) have a list for Soft White/Club, HRW and HRS wheats. The PNW list was recently updated to raise quality standards for the MD, D, A, LD levels. 13 Results from the Recommended Variety Lists Growers are being encouraged to plant the higher quality varieties Growers are asked to first choose the several varieties that are agronomically best for their area Then they are asked to select the highest quality varieties from within their top agronomic group Grower outcomes are positive Producer awareness of varietal quality is improving Planting choices now include active consideration of quality in combination with agronomics
