1 Vol. 1, March 2016 Maharashtra Gene Bank Programme for Conservation, Management and Revival of Local Bio Resources Supported by: Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commissions (RGSTC), Govt. of Maharashtra Coordinated by: Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune The BAIF component focuses on participatory in situ and ex situ conservation, management and revival of local resources i.e. crop landraces, livestock types, forestry (Non Timber Forest Produce) and habitat types in select clusters and diverse agro climatic zones of state of Maharashtra. The project is for 5 years (January 2014 to Dec 2019). The project is being implemented by BAIF Institute for Sustainable Livelihood and Development (BISLD) in collaboration with Maharashtra Institute for Technology Transfer in Rural Areas (MITTRA) and BAIF Central Research Station, Urulikanchan. The main project components include: 1. Participatory listing of location specific bio resources, traditional resource keepers and knowledge holders. 2. Participatory documentation of important bio resources covering aspects such as, presence, use, occurrence, threats and pressures, local claims, existing conservation practices and geographical distribution. 3. Characterization of important bio resources and scientific validation of local claims. 4. Introducing in -situ and ex- situ conservation measures blending people s knowledge and science and technology tools. 5. Community mobilization and motivation building for sustained conservation and revival of bio resources. Bio resource wise area coverage: S. No. Name of the clusters District Names No. of villages Focused themes 1 Jawhar Palghar 11 Crop, NTFP, Habitat 2 Akole Ahmednagar 19 Crop, Dangi cattle, Sangamneri goat 3 Junner Pune 6 Crop 4 Dhadgaon Nandurbar 15 Crop, NTFP, Satpudi poultry, Habitat 5 Etapalli Gadchiroli/ Wardha 28 Crops, NTFP, Berari goat, Gaulao cattle 6 Kandhar/ Gangakhed Nanded/Parbhani 15 Lalkandhari cattle MGB-Newsletter 1

Purification and morphological characterization done through 15 in situ conservation centres. Data on 20 important traits for selected crops collected from seed keepers. 35 paddy varieties applied for registration under PPV & FRA Act. Initiated community level seed production (20 ha) and community seed banks (5). Community mobilization and Awareness through village level seed exhibitions (28), wild food recipe competitions (14) and awareness programmes (20). Nutritional evaluation of selected landraces of different millet types (Finger Millet (10), Proso millet (10), Barnyard millet (01), Foxtail Millet (01)) in Jawhar and Nandurbar. Established a Gene Bank at Central Research Station for ex-situ conservation of plant genetic resources having 5 C and 33 % relative humidity and a storage capacity of 2 MT. 2. Indigenous Livestock Diversity Collected information on native livestock breeds (Cattle (Dangi, Lal Kandhari and Gaulao), goats (Sangamneri and Berari) and local poultry (Satpudi) and their management practices. In depth survey of 5043 livestock breeders for selection of families for in-situ conservation work. Daily milk recording of cattle breeds initiated to study the milk yield potential of focused breeds. Initiated Artificial Insemination services through 6 Cattle Breeding Centres. Achieved 680 AI, 285 pregnancy, 167 confirmed pregnancy and 56 calvings in Dangi and Lalkandhari breeds. 7 bull calves (2 each of Dangi and Lalkandhari and 3 Gaulao) procured for ex-situ conservation. Awareness program through health camps (29), deworming and vaccination. Mapping of the traditional forage resources (40) and their nutritional analysis. MGB-Newsletter 2
3 3. Conservation of Non timber Forest Produce (NTFPs) 7 NTFP species have been prioritized in consultation with communities considering it s economic, household consumption and social and cultural value and need for conservation and revival. Completed 375 individual households survey involved in NTFP collection processing and marketing. Documented availability of produce, local harvesting methods, processing and marketing of select forest produce. Study on current harvesting practices and value chain analysis on-going for few species. Identified 79 candidate plus trees for further multiplication and plantation. Nursery of plants of selected candidate tree species raised for plantation. Laboratory studies of seeds and flowers of 52 Mahuva candidate trees for sugar, nutrient and oil content. 4. Habitat Conservation Identified four sites to introduce the process of conservation of natural habitats with active involvement of the local community. The Konkanpada (6.5 ha of CFRA) in Jawhar and Community forestry area in Harankhuri (15 ha), Belakund (15 ha) and Kakadda (10 ha) villages in Dhadgaon are selected for habitat conservation work. Initiated soil and water conservation measures and regenerative plantation work at 4 sites. Seasonal surveys to document region s biodiversity and species diversity are being conducted involving experts. Participatory awareness generation events are regularly conducted for community mobilization. MGB-Newsletter 3
