I also master in A-M SYSTEMS 2100 Isolated Pulse Stimulator, A.M.P.I. Master-8 stimulator and devices for iontophoresis and pressure injection. In Vitro Electrophysiology: Primary cell culture, whole cell patch clamp, drug perfusion and drugs pressure injection. Brain slice preparation and sharp electrode intracellular recording. In Vivo Electrophysiology: Stereotaxic surgery, single and multichannel extracellular recording, peripheral nerve electrical stimulation and drugs administration, laser stimulation, rat brain mounting, slicing, staining and electrodes implantation. Sharp electrode intracellular recording, neuron characteristics identification and Lucifer yellow and neurobiotin injection. Rat Behavior Test: Electrical avoidance learning and electrophysiology in free-moving
rat. Biochemistry: Bacteria protein purification, PAGE, DNA extraction, purification and manipulation. Computer Software Matlab associated processing about electrophysiology, TDT OpenEx, Spike 2, pclamp 6.0, Microsoft Office, Sigmaplot, Reference Manager and Adobe PhotoShop, etc. Statistics and Analysis methods Student t-test, ANOVA, current source density, isopotential contour map, principle component analysis, spike sorting, and the average sliding technique, etc. Computer Programming HTML, perl and Javascript in Homepage. Matlab, Quick Basic, C and Borland C++ Builder in Data Acquisition. I am trying to program in Matlab to acquire real-time signals from NI and TDT AD card. Awards The third place of the poster contest of Institute of Biomedical Sciences of Academia Sinica in 2002 and Extracurricular Activities In 1994, I was elected to be the major editor of newspaper of sports of National Chung Hsing University. In 1994, I was elected as the commander of training courses of editors and reporters with 30 partners. In 1995, I was elected to be the leader of the News Club of National Chung Hsing University. In 1996, the newspapers my club published won a prize from United Daily News in Taiwan.
In 1998, I attended to be the leader of a serious live talk show about campus with 20 partners in a student radio station of National Tsing Hua University. In 2002, I built the website of the News Club of National Chung Hsing University for graduated students.
Research Interests My background is concerning the electrophysiology in neuroscience including in vitro and in vivo. I am interested in the information processing of brain signals including the field potentials, multiple unit activities, spikes and intracellular recording. The point I want to know is the importance of neuronal signals relating to animal behavior. In this process, I try to use any possible approach to find out the answer. On the other side, I also interested in the application of neuroscience on our life. For example, the neuronal prosthesis, because I always ask myself what kinds of research match the need of people. Therefore, the neuronal prosthesis is a good project for me now to apply the techniques and algorithm I have had (multi-channel recording, data processing in field potentials or multiple unit activities, current source density analysis, principle component analysis in spiking sorting).
Autobiography I majored in veterinary medicine in Nation Chung Hsing University and started to notice the neuroscience in pharmacology class. Then, I tried to find institutes concerning the neuroscience and fortunately I got the entrance permission of the Life Science Institute of National Tsing Hua University in 1998 in Taiwan. I was guided into the field of neuroscience from Dr. Chang's guidance and his courses and I started to learn how to design and handle experiments. My master thesis is concerning the neuron behavior using whole cell patch recording technique in cell culture. Then I moved to Dr. Shyu s lab in Academia Sinica in 2000 and started to study electrophysiology in vivo. My first project is the paired-pulse facilitation between medial-dorsal thalamus and anterior cingulated cortex using tungsten electrodes to stimulate the medial-dorsal thalamus and record the field potentials and multiple unit activities in anterior cingulated cortex in anaesthetized rats. And the second project is to implant the tungsten electrodes in medial-dorsal thalamus and anterior cingulated cortex and tried to find the correlation between behavior and paired-pulse facilitation in free-moving rats. The third project used Michigan probe (16-channel electrode) to record the field potentials and multiple unit activities in somatosensory area 1 following laser stimuli (as heat pain) in anaesthetized rats and putative micro-circuit was constructed. And, the project I perform now is about intracellular recording in somatosensory cortex area 1 using sharp glassy pipette to confirm the putative micro-circuit. Therefore, in these years, I learned how to design experiments seriously and obtained the ability of programming with Matlab and got the principle of using AD card even the multi-channel system. I also have published several posters and attended to international neuroscience meetings, and written several manuscripts. At this time, I am going to find another advanced lab in other country for different thinking, attitude and PhD training.
