2 Celebrating 15 years Dear Attendee Welcome to our Belfast Patient and Family Myeloma Infoday. This Infoday is one of several held each year throughout the UK and Ireland. Patient and Family Myeloma Infodays are about people affected by myeloma learning from experts in the field and meeting others in a similar situation. A typical Infoday includes various slide presentations, Q&A sessions, small group breakouts, networking and discussion time. In your delegate pack you will find a copy of Myeloma Your Essential Guide and Living with Myeloma Your Essential Guide. All our other publications are available to pick up today on the Information Table. You can also order our publications by completing the enclosed order form and handing it to a Myeloma UK member of staff. You can also request copies of the presenters slides. 4 Speaker profile Dr Michael Qiunn Consultant Haematologist, Belfast City Hospital Dr Michael Quinn initially trained at the Belfast City Hospital Haematology Department, followed by a one year fellowship at the Vancouver General Hospital transplant programme and BC Cancer Agency, Vancouver in He is a consultant haematologist currently working in the Department of Haematology based at the Belfast City Hospital with a special interest in myeloma, lymphoproliferative disorders and stem cell transplantation. Jackie Quinn Myeloma Clinical Nurse Specialist, Belfast City Hospital Jackie was appointed as Myeloma Clinical Nurse Specialist at Belfast City Hospital in January After qualifying in nursing in 1990, Jackie worked in general medical wards in Altnagelvin Area Hospital, Derry, and Belfast City Hospital. She commenced working in Oncology BCH in 1992 and moved to haematology in Jackie specialised in haematology clinical trials from 2000 until Jan 2007, having a special interest in myeloma trials. Jackie completed a BA (Hons) degree in Social Sciences in 1998, and completed PG Cert Specialist Practice Oncology Nursing 2005 and also a Masters degree in Organisation and Management in In December 2006 she completed a course in counselling skills and has completed the Nurse Prescribing course. Jackie hopes to develop her role as clinical nurse specialist to meet the needs of myeloma patients. Her main interest is maintaining each patient s independence and quality of life through her role as a key worker.

5 Speaker profile Eric Low OBE, Chief Executive Myeloma UK Eric has been involved in the field of myeloma for over 15 years. Working as a volunteer in the United States for the International Myeloma Foundation, he recognised the need and the benefit of providing information and support to people affected by myeloma. Returning to the UK, Eric identified the need for a similar organisation in the UK and as a result he set up Myeloma UK in Under Eric s direction Myeloma UK has grown and developed and is the only UK cancer organisation dealing exclusively with myeloma. Today, Myeloma UK reaches over 12,000 people affected by myeloma and the majority of healthcare professionals involved in their care. Eric s recent achievements have included establishing a national Myeloma Early Phase Clinical Trial Network and a myeloma genetics and drug development research programme. He has also ensured that myeloma patients in the UK have been able to access novel treatments through advocating solution-oriented approaches to the way drugs are made available on the NHS.
