1 Thai - German Bioeconomy Conference: Cooperation Opportunities for a Sustainable Bioeconomy Thursday 28 January 2016 at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, Bangkok and Friday 29 January 2016 at Kantary Hills Hotel, Chiang Mai, Thailand Organized by Cluster and Program Management Office (CPMO) National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC) National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) In cooperation with Federal Ministry of Education and Research Forschungszentrum Jülich Gemeinschaft zur Förderung von Pflanzeninnovation e. V. (GFPi) Bioeconomy Science Center (BioSC) Global challenges In view of scarce natural resources, climate change and rapid increases in population, it has become all the more urgent to develop sustainable strategies that enable the efficient use of our natural resources to ensure society s prosperity in the long term. Globally people are in search of innovative and sustainable solutions to overcome the long-term challenges of food and energy security, climate protection, and the sustainable management of natural resources. A promising approach to these challenges is the generation and integration of knowledge about biological systems for the sustainable production of bio-based raw materials that can be transformed into food, feed as well as bio-based materials, chemicals and sources of energy. Concept and relevance The term bioeconomy captures all of the economic sectors that are involved in the production, processing and use of biological resources (plants, animals, microorganisms) for the production of food and feed, bio-based chemicals, materials, and bioenergy. In a knowledge-based bioeconomy, the sustainable use of limited resources must be achieved by integrating and applying knowledge about biological resources and processes. The economic, ecological and social aspects of sustainability are all carefully considered in developing innovative solutions to some of the world s most pressing issues such a climate change and declining resources. From Germany to Europe and the world A bioeconomy offers an opportunity to achieve economic growth while at the same time protecting scarce natural resources and the environment. Germany, a global leader in science and research, is at the forefront of building a successful bioeconomy. But a bioeconomy is by definition transnational; it is tackling issues such as climate change that are global in nature. Moving towards a bioeconomy therefore requires international cooperation in terms of research and policy.
2 The vision of a bioeconomy has already found its way into the national strategic plans of the European Union (EU) and the Member States of the EU. Nearly a decade ago, the European Commission developed the concept of the Knowledge Based Bioeconomy (KBBE) with the aim of building a European bioeconomy that could compete on a global level. To support this goal, the European Commission laid out a research and innovation strategy which involved the financing of 9 KBBE specific European Technology Platforms (ETP) by the Seventh Framework Program (FP7). In 2012 the Commission launched its strategy Innovating for sustainable Growth: a Bioeconomy for Europe, and the bioeconomy remains a high priority within Horizon 2020, the EU s latest research and innovation funding program. Driving Bioeconomy in Thailand The bioeconomy is the next generation of Thailand s agriculture based economy and involves moving away from a focus on feedstock supply to increasing production in mid- and downstream markets. Over the next 10 years, Thailand expects to double the GDP contribution of crop-based agriculture through productivity improvement, and by shifting towards higher value added products. To achieve this goal, Thailand will need to move from a sector-based economy to one that is both more integrated as well as being focused on public benefit. Government will need to develop a coordinated approach with industry to ensure that the policies and infrastructure are in place to allow Thailand to reap the full benefits of a bioeconomy. Objectives of Bioeconomy conference Increase knowledge of the bioeconomy - opportunities and challenges Exchange on the science and research supporting a bioeconomy Identify opportunities for Thai-German cooperation in building a bioeconomy Language: The whole course will be given in English (No translation) Registration fee: Free of charge Registration deadline: 22 January 2016 On-line registration: please visit Remark You can choose to attend the conference either in Bangkok, 28 January 2016 or in Chiang Mai, 29 January You cannot attend both events.
