1 Prospectus Introduction The st century is envisioned as an era of Biotechnology and Applied Microbiology. Remarkable achievements have been made in the field of science, in general and life sciences in particular, during recent decades. The impact of these developments on improving the quality of life is obvious. Consumption of biotech products including conventional biotechnology and recombinant DNA products has exceeded Rs. 9. billion in 006 and reached more than Rs billion in 009. The main contributors are the fermentation-based products e.g. Vaccines, Biopolymers, Antibiotics, Alcohol, Organic Acids, Enzymes, Amino Acids, Baker's yeast, etc. In near future, fermentation based products and services would remain important contributors to biotech product scenario. Realizing the immense economic potential, Institute of Industrial Biotechnology (IIB) was set up in 005 at GC University Lahore by a grant of Rs Million from Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan. IIB is a vibrant and ambitious institute. The Institute has gained a very good repute in the University and the society due to its strong commitment to excellence both in research and teaching during the last ten years. The aim of IIB is to develop indigenous manpower experts in Microbiology and Biotechnology. This has increased employment opportunities for qualified students both in industrial research and development markets. The manpower will be highly instrumental in developing in-house technologies for the production of various industrial products at National and International level. The Institute has adopted an integrated approach embracing the view that tomorrow's breakthroughs are likely to occur at the interface of traditional and advanced biological subdivisions. The aim is well served by the amalgamation of all the related disciplines of Microbiology and Biotechnology. The learning process at IIB comprises of a combination of lectures (theory & practical), seminars/presentations, research projects, internships in various industries, industrial study tours, self directed readings and independent studies. The Mission statement of IIB is the: Untiring efforts for the development of human resources and sustainable bioprocesses in the integrated fields of Microbiology and Biotechnology
2 98 Prospectus 06 Institute of Industrial Biotechnology (IIB) Academic Programmes a) Biotechnology l BSc (Hons) l MPhil l PhD b) Microbiology l BSc (Hons) l MPhil l The course contents of the programmes related to Microbiology and Biotechnology are prepared according to the guidelines provided by HEC Pakistan and QEC of. l The Curriculum Committee updates/revises the curricula regularly (every six months) on the basis of latest trends and developments, and feedback from the concerned teachers and students. l The courses are then approved by the concerned Board of Studies in Microbiology and Biotechnology separately which consists of renowned Scientists, Academicians and Industrialists from all over the country. l In 0, IIB faculty comprehensively reviewed and revised course contents of all programmes, some new courses were introduced in BSc (Hons.) and MPhil scheme of study schemes. These revised curricula were approved by Academic Council and Syndicate of Lahore in 05. Curriculum Booklets of BSc (Hons.) Biotechnology and Microbiology were prepared and are available for students. Research Groups/research Strengths The IIB has established Research Group in following area: a) Research Groups l Bioenergy l Bioprocessing l Enzymology l Immunology l Applied Bioinformatics l Bioremediation b) Research Strength IIB has been able to develop the infrastructure for performing lab and pilot scale projects in a very short span of time. The students and young faculty members are the main strengths who are further guided by environment scientists and researchers. The industrialization of Biotechnology for the biosynthesis of products is based on bioprocesses by making use of indigenous resources (agroindustrial). These include organic acids, biofuels, enzymes and antibiotics. Some of these projects were funded by Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), Ministry of Science and (MOST), Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC). Facilities Highly qualified and experienced teaching faculty is present to instruct and supervise students in the latest fields of Microbiology and Biotechnology. All the faculty members are engaged in R&D activities in addition to teaching and other activities. The research is focused on various disciplines of Microbiology and Biotechnology particularly Fermentation, Enzymology, Bioprocess, Molecular Biology,
