5 Formulation Recommendations The ingredients listed below were found to work well in our formulations. The recommendations below are not meant to be all inclusive and are meant only to provide starting points to help the formulator quickly get started successfully formulating SNAP 728. As is often the case when formulating, synergies between ingredients were seen in our testing. For the best results recommends the formulator begin by manufacturing one of the recommended starting formulations for comparison testing when making raw material substitutions. Dispersants Dispersants are critical to the gloss development of SNAP 728. The following dispersants work well with SNAP 728 COADIS BR-40 COADIS XP 1902 COADIS BR-85 TAMOL 1124 recommends using great care when evaluating the following dispersants in SNAP 728 as these dispersants produced low glosses in SNAP 728 paints TAMOL 681 COADIS 123K TAMOL 731 Defoamer has worked successfully with the following defoamers in our high gloss zero VOC formulations BYK 023, 024, 025, 1650, 1660 TEGO Foamex 810 Cognis FOAMSTAR A36 and DEHYDRAN 1620 Defoamer affects the gloss and the surface feel of the coating. Defoamers providing the best surface feel include Foamex 810, BYK 024 and BYK Surface Feel The surface feel of Enamel Paints made with SNAP 728 can be sensitive to raw material selection. If further enhancement to the surface feel or scratch resistance of the coating is desired, an additive such as BYK -333 (or an equivalent) can be used at 0.05% to 0.1% on total formula weight. It is possible to achieve good surface feel through formulation design without the use of this type of surface additive. ph Control Additives AEPD VOX 1000 was found to provide the most robust performance in our formulations and is recommend as the ph control additive to begin with. Formulations using Ammonium Hydroxide, Sodium Hydroxide, and AMP 95 have all been tested in our lab. testing shows that it is possible to make high quality paints with all these ph control additives, however when substituting ph control additives, reformulation and/or re-optimization is often needed to rebalance the property changes that occur when changing this type of additive. Coalescent SNAP 728 is designed to self-coalesce and does not require the use of a coalescent. Some formulations can benefit from the addition of a coalescent. In lab, OPTIFILM 400 was found to give acceptable results. A coalescent may be needed to help with low temperature film formation when formulating semi-gloss and satin paint with higher extender pigment loadings. Thickeners SNAP 728 has been shown to work well with both HEUR and HASE thickeners. In our testing the use of AQUAFLOW XLS 500 and RHEOTECH XP 1915 often gave the most robust paint performance. Other thickeners used successfully include COAPUR 2025, AQUAFLOW NHS-300, COAPUR XP1964, and COAPUR 817W. Titanium Dioxide Titanium Dioxide grade selection will affect the maximum achievable gloss. A handful of slurry grades and dry grades were tested in our lab with SNAP 728. The following grades are recommended as starting points to benchmark against when making substitutions. DuPont TI-PURE s R-706 gave the highest gloss among the dry grades tested and is recommended as a starting point. DuPont TI-PURE s R-746 and TRONOX 826S gave the highest gloss among the slurries tested and are recommended as starting points. Surfactants Formulation development testing shows that not all SNAP 728 formulations require added surfactant. For those formulations that do require further optimization for color development or to enhance application rheology has used the following surfactants CARBOWET 109, CARBOWET DC-01, STRODEX PK-0VOC and the wetting agent BYK 349 successfully in our formulations.
