9 Introduction: Working at Hinkley Point C Introduction: Working at Hinkley Point C Paul Waldeck, Founder and Director of Waldeck Consulting was asked by Nuclear South West: What has it been like to work with EDF and to be on site at Hinkley Point C? Paul said: It has been a fantastic experience working integrally as part of a highly talented international client team on the journey to get the project ready and to the point of the project now being approved by the new government. The collaborative culture, digital 21 st century tools, lessons learned from previous projects and the undoubted commitment of the people will contribute to a highly successful result for all involved and the UK as a whole when the project is completed and generating zero carbon electricity, and making a major contribution to safeguarding the nation s energy supplies for the next 60 years.

11 Section 2: What is building Information Modelling (bim)? A building Information Model consists of both graphical and nongraphical information hosted on a Common Data Environment (CDE) it is much more than just a 3D model as it represents the functional characteristics of a built asset: The graphical information is in the form of a 3D model The non-graphical information is corresponding data, such as Programme (4D), Cost (5D) and Sustainability (6D) and Facilities & Asset Management (7D) The CDE is seen as a single source of truth, a secure virtual space where all project data is correlated coordinated, configured and housed Waldeck offer fully integrated 7D bim, which enables components within a model to be tagged with relevant data and indeed, given intelligence which enhances the overall efficiency of a projects lifecycle when interfaced with Enterprise Lifecycle Management (ELM).

12 Section 2: UK Government and building Information Modelling (bim) Policy Waldeck have assisted UK Government bim Steering Groups with how the Government Policy to procure new built assets using bim to Level 2 can be delivered. This came into force on April 4 th 2016 Early adopters have seen savings of up to 20% capex This Government directive is a key policy and is transforming the industry through adopting a digital collaborative way of working in the UK. This is beneficial for all stakeholders and suppliers. Aligned with this policy, the UK Government expect a 70% increase in construction output by 2025 and have developed the Construction 2025 strategy as a response.

14 Section 3: What is Enterprise Lifecycle Management (ELM)? 7D bim based Enterprise Lifecycle Management (ELM) facilitates the safe, efficient and accessible use of a built asset from cradle to grave: It is more than just a definition of a piece, or pieces of technology, it is a definition of a business approach to managing project information through an asset s entire lifecycle ELM aids the feasibility and planning, design and development, construction, operations, maintenance and decommissioning phases of an asset ELM It s the central management of a projects data and technology utilised to access this information and knowledge It is clear that the introduction of ELM at the start of a project will add even further to the savings already potentially achieved by bim (20% capex) adoption

15 Section 3: What is Enterprise Lifecycle Management (ELM)? Enterprise Lifecycle Management is derived from the interfacing of two concepts; bim and Product Lifecycle Management. Product Lifecycle Management is a term which has been widely used by the Manufacturing industry for decades to refer to a system supporting the operations, maintenance and decommissioning phase of a product and its component parts. By adding bim (which has historically focussed on enhancing the beginning of a project) and Product Lifecycle Management together, a new concept with enriched savings and efficiencies has been created: Enterprise Lifecycle Management (ELM) A digital solution which focusses on the full lifecycle of an asset, from cradle to grave.
