Agenda BIAN Introduction Strong Interest from Banks and Partners Worldwide Why ING Joined BIAN BIAN Deliverables Benefits of this Vibrant Community for Banks and Partners 3
Current Challenges for Banks Increasing the bank s ability and flexibility Enabling new Business Models Achieving a closer alignment between business and IT Reducing Complexity of IT System Landscapes Integrating in-house developed solutions with software solutions from different vendors Introducing modern IT and business architectures to better support the business 4
Progression to SOA for the Banking Industry 1970 s to 1990 s 1990 s to 2000 s Legacy Banking Architectures Adoption of SOA SOA for Banking Spaghetti-ware integration Silos of systems aligned with departments Diverse and proprietary integration formats Little or no reuse of application modules or common functions Inefficiency in operations, processing, and product delivery Development of modular components and reuse of services Adoption of industry data formats at banks and by vendors Internal view of banking services leading to limited or no reuse across the industry High overhead in service definition and development Creating a standard semantic banking services landscape with individual service definitions Ensuring consistent service definitions, levels of detail and boundaries Moving from a proprietary to a standardized services model to enable integration of commercially available products 5
BIAN s Vision Industry SOA-Focus Today BIAN envisions a SOA-enabled banking industry with both internal and industry-wide agility and flexibility. BIAN supports banks to define their internal services based on industry collaboration and best practices. internal external Majority Of Banks BIAN today proprietary best practices Internal SOA-Focus standard Industry SOA-Focus internal external Tomorrow proprietary best practices Internal SOA-Focus BIAN tomorrow standard Banks are enabled to develop their semantic service definitions on a consistent basis through BIAN to enable internal and commercial SOAbased solutions according to a standardized industry model.
The Power of Joint Standardization: BIAN Founded in 2008, the Banking Industry Architecture Network (BIAN) is a global, not-for-profit organization that seeks to develop standard Service Landscape and Semantic IT Service (A2A) Definitions for the Banking industry. BIAN will enable the next generation of banking industry solutions developed either in-house or commercially: By leading banks sharing their requirements for core services By leading software and services vendors to implement them based on standard semantics. 24 Members 9 Banks 7 Service Providers 8 Software Vendors
Review: Gartner View on BIAN (1/2) Overall Potential Value Impact of BIAN: BIAN has the potential of providing significant value to banks and vendors pursuing SOA initiatives, if it is successful in providing a standardized services landscape and vocabulary for discussing, assessing and comparing SOA approaches in banks. Varying values or primary benefits will be gained by different banking segments as BIAN mature and becomes more viable [ ]
Review: Gartner View on BIAN (2/2) Recommendations: For large and midsize banks with complex SOA initiatives: Map your SOA architecture to the BIAN service landscape, and identify commonalities and differences. [ ] Participate in BIAN to ensure that your business requirements and architectural preferences for the service landscape are heard and addressed, and to network with banks with concerns similar to your own. Adopt BIAN definitions for business areas and domains, and for services, in conversations with vendors and other banks. Press vendors to show how their products and services map to the BIAN service landscape as part of vendor selection. For banks with single-vendor (or limited vendor) SOA environments: Use BIAN participation as one measure of vendors' commitment to SOA. For areas where BIAN is actively building more-granular service specifications including payment and lending press vendors to demonstrate how they are supporting these specifications as part of vendor selection. 12 BIAN Strategy BIAN will put strong emphasis on standardization. A two way strategy to position BIAN: First priority: Evolve BIAN Service Landscape to a reference model in the banking industry within the next two years Goal: Creating a de facto standard. In Parallel: Actively becoming a member of the ISO20022 network to develop service definitions to an ISO Standard. Including enhanced guidelines and templates to support the service definition on a more detailed level with regard to interoperability. IFX FORUM AND BIAN SIGN MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING The Interactive Financial exchange Forum and the Banking Industry Architecture Network announced today that the two organizations have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) outlining plans to collaborate in developing and furthering the adoption of standards that enhance interoperability BIAN 2011 BIAN within Banking the Industry banking Architecture industry. 17 Standardization Driving Flexibility & Agility Why ING joined BIAN Business or Technology Challenge ING has implemented a Service Oriented Architecture to enhance agility and flexibility of its IT capability. To get maximum benefit from this approach, standardization of the service definitions is required: this facilitates reuse of existing IT solutions and is needed to create a better fit for integrating external solutions. Alignment & Impact of BIAN ING service landscape and service definitions are mapped to BIAN deliverables BIAN deliverables are used in core banking package selection programmes Results, Benefits, and Future Direction Capitalize on extensive experience in service orientation at ING to have influence on standard setting of services for the financial industry Participate in building collaborative network between financial institutions and solution providers Use platform to get sanity check on architectural choices and the developments going on at ING Reduce development and maintenance cost and enhance interoperability by using standardized service definitions Standards create strong foundations for sustainable growth Johan Smessaert, Head of Retail Change Belgium, ING Ops & IT 17
Standardization Driving Flexibility, Agility & Lower Costs Why ING joined BIAN ING In large organizations, integration costs make or break the business case in building new applications. The cost level is determined by the degree of standardization of interfaces, from a technical and a definition point of view. While it is becoming more and more clear that SOA is the best technology for internal (today) and external (soon) interfaces, standards will have to be agreed upon at industry level. That is why BIAN, and the facilitation it provides for software vendors and banks is so important to us." In large organizations, integration costs make or break the business case in building new applications Steve Van Wyk, Chief Information Officer, ING Bank 18
