Situated in an idyllic part of rural North Yorkshire, the 20,000 square foot showroom and workshops were established in 1978 by Chris and Karan Main and has grown from strength to strength over the past 35 years. Joined by sons Alex and Tom in 2004, the family business is bursting with knowledge and ideas, built up from the vast experience gained from trading within the national and international markets and its justifiable reputation for excellence in truly bespoke designs. From clean oak, character oak, traditional reclaimed pine, rustic pine, maple and cherry, the bespoke kitchen company offers a wide range of finishes to complement different living environments and personal style. Using kiln dried hardwood to construct its painted kitchens frames and doors, The Main Company use a variety of quality materials ranging from solid oak to hand-aged plywood in its internal cabinetry. Its natural wood kitchens are also manufactured using oak, maple, reclaimed pine and cherry ensuring a truly individual look is created within homes. The Portabello kitchen mixes painted units in contrasting colours with reclaimed wooden tops and sleek stainless steel surfaces, all complemented by stainless appliances. 10 Cattal Street A kitchen that undoubtedly makes a statement, this cool and contemporary barn conversion is the perfect space for this truly bespoke kitchen project. Featuring a reclaimed engineered pine wood finish of Oldham Mill Board, solid oak drawer boxes and lacquered birch plywood carcasses, the impressive room provides the ideal living and dining setting for the homeowners and their three children. 13 Chester Featuring under-counter lighting and a bracket foot, the Chester kitchen is perfectly suited to this stunning contemporary country home. Designed to complement the stunning oak-framed interior of the room, the dramatic beams are mirrored in the kitchen canopy and the warm wood colour has also been reflected in the recessed plinth. The combination of the original oak beams and granite worktops gives the kitchen a truly handmade and traditional look whilst incorporating modern appliances such as the Lacanche cooker and pop-up plug socket. 15 Chrome hardware and hinges were used to complement the taps and modern style of the kitchen. Adding the kitchen island also provided a great space for both cooking and entertaining, and is perfect for ensuring the kitchen is the true hub of the home. 16 Carlton Towers There has been a house dominating the village of Carlton since the Norman Conquest and today it is thought to be one of the best preserved in Gothic Revival interiors. The Main Company was appointed to be part of a renovation project for the mainly disused servants quarters downstairs, much in the same style as Downton Abbey, to turn the area into a cookery school using the various rooms for different functions. Cooks, The Carlton School of Food is one of the only private schools to be found in a stately home. As part of the brief, they wanted to keep the soul of the rooms and reuse any items possible, for example, the open shelves on the wall, the racks in the kitchen, the copper sink wooden lid, the housekeeper s cupboard and the old marble on brick pillars have all been restored to create a beautifully styled kitchen with state-of-the-art facilities. 18 There were a number of period pine tables in storage and after measuring they found the perfect fit for the Pastry Room. The long table was restored and marble was cut to fit the over the original table top which was left in place. The old marble on the original brick pillars was reused and cut up to be used as work boards The Main Company // page 34 The Main Company // page 35

19 Cambridge A major house redesign was behind the transformation of this kitchen project, which involved renovating the existing swimming pool building into the new kitchen. From insulating the old building, filling in the pool and putting in a false floor, the unique project enabled the homeowners to create the rustic and industrial kitchen that they had always desired. 21 Featuring a bespoke corner cabinet with an aluminium roller shutter door, a large island with breakfast bar, contemporary factory lighting and a distinctive wall made of pallets, the space has now been transformed into a family room that oozes character. The bespoke kitchen also features a walk-in pantry exposed behind an engineered reclaimed pine door, where the wood has gained its character from many years of weathering. 22 York Recycled timber shelving, reclaimed wagon board worktops and handcut rectangular tiles allowed The Main Company to create a truly unique kitchen for the homeowners, whilst ensuring the space was both practical and stylish for their growing family. Using the available space to its full capacity, The Main Company added high-level storage cupboards, creating plenty of open shelving below for a feeling of openness and light in the room. 24 Kensington Combining sophisticated and contemporary style, The Main Company used an eclectic mix of engineered weathered oak doors and dark painted cabinetry to create a truly spectacular kitchen. Featuring a burnished copper sink and aged copper on the interior of the wall cupboards, The Main Company added grey Silestone worktops to complement the statement metallic finishes. 25 The original Aga was the only item to be left in the room when the kitchen was designed and its warm red hues are the perfect contrast to the dramatic kitchen scheme. 26 Adding the housekeeper s cupboard also provided an incredible amount of storage space on the remaining back wall, whilst the unusual taps and original bar stools, which sit snugly underneath the weathered oak-wrapped seating area, add to the eclectic style of the kitchen. 30 EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE BEAUTIFUL FURNITURE COLLECTION Years ago, The Main Company was renowned for restoring old furniture, and the pieces they sold were often original and antique items. Most of the pieces were painted, and in the fashion of the time, stripped back to the original golden pine and then waxed. As interior trends changed, so did this process. Now original painted pieces are left to show history and authenticity, and people appreciate different styles and original construction techniques.
