Presentation Outline Presentation Overview Natural Insulation.what are my options? Why should I consider natural insulation for health? How does natural insulation compare with man made insulation? The life cycle of natural insulation Which natural insulation should I use? Summary Q & A Common Natural Insulation Products HolzFlex040 Thermafleece Warmcel 100 Thermo Hemp
Why Should I use Natural Insulation Reduced Energy Consumption Increased Comfort Better Health Less Maintainance Longer Building Life Less impact on the Natural Environment Lower Costs Insulation Key Charateristics Thermal Insulation in Winter Ability to absorb and release moisture (Hyrgospocity) Improves room climate/health Fire Protection Sound Reduction Summer Heat Protection Ecological material and healthy living Environment
What issues arise with Insulation Some Insulation compress over time due to low density/lack of structure 250mm loft insulation often settles to 200mm Convective heat loss due to low density and air circulation in open structures Insulation used in wrong application (e.g loft insulation used in wall and slumps) Insulaiton degrades over time Some DO NOT WORK AS CLAIMED Some insulations are permanantly dameged if exposed to moisture Building Health We spend 90% of our lives inside buildings...far more than any time in history The building fabric has changed from: Keeping Weather out to also Keeping Heat in Focusing on building energy efficient buildings alone can be to the detriment of a healthy living environment
Building Health Two forms of pollutants in buildings: Microbiological (Mould, dust mites, fungi, bacteria etc) Chemical particulate (Off gassing/voc s of man made chemicals) Microbiological pollutants thrive at humidity's of < than 40% or > 60%. Healthy living space humidity should be kept between these figures. Microbiological pollutants can cause allergic reactions such as asthma. In the past asthma never existed, now it is more common and any time in history Scotland, New Zealand and Ireland have the highest rates in the world. In Ireland, 30.3% of all year old children have ASTHMA (WHO) Materials which reduce the potential for mould growth and dust mites to grow is to be supported Mould Growth in Constructions

Moisture Protection Limited absorption capacity within the insulation building, elements are suseptable to damage when exposed to moisture Little Absorption by the Insulation e.g. Synthetic -Insulation Moisture present between the rafters 1% moisture content = 100g/m² 10% moisture content = 1 kg/m² 30% moisture content = 3 kg/m²
Structural damage due to moisture The insulation behind the thermal insulation is wet and mouldy Insulation with Absorptive Properties increases the safety of the construction Moisture present between the rafters 1% moisture content = 100g/m² 10% moisture content = 1 kg/m² 30% moisture content = 3 kg/m²
Absorption Capacity/Hygroscopic Properties Insulation Material 30% = 30 Litre 2% = 0,5 Litre Woodfibre natural insulation Man Made Fibrous Insulation Moisture Protection Natural Insulation Slabs Diffusion open µ-value = 1 best suited for diffusion open constructions Moisture properties of Natural insulation: Room Humidity perfectly Balanaced Moisture present in construction is absorbed
Fire Protection Natural Insulation: Fire resistance? Chars rather than melts when exposed to naked flame Does not emit any poisonous gases when exposed to flame Treated with Sodium Bicarbonate/Borcic Salt to comply with fire regulations Class E Fire Rating
Sound Protection Natural Insulation Timber Rafters Roofs Rw,R over 55 db Timber beam ceilings Rw,R over 70 db Lnw,R over 33 db Floor/Screed Lnw,R over 26 db Timber studded walls Rw,R over 62 db Metal studded walls Rw,R over 60 db
Sound Protection Natural Insulation Slabs Effective sound protection and absorption Proven and durable Summer Heat Protection
Phase Shift External Temperature Variation The phase shift is the time span between the highest external temperature and the highest internal temperature. Internal Temperature Variation to Phase Shift = 12 h Amplitude Damping External Temperature Variation The amplitude damping is the relationship between the variation of the external temperature and the interior temperature. Internal Temperature Variation External Temperature Variation 24 C Internal temperature variation 3 C = Amplitude Damping 8
Natural insulation and Heat Protection Amplitude Damping Phase Shift Wirkung von Amplitudendämpfung und Phasenverschiebung Amplitude Damping = External Temperature Difference Internal Temperature Difference = 24 C 3 C = 8
Summer Heat Protection A high heat storage capacity means: High Amplitude Damping Long Phase Shift The internal climate is consistantly pleasant in the summer and winter Natural Insulation An ecological Natural Insulation Material: Hemp
Hemp Description Annual herbaceous plant of the species Cannabis sativa, meaning "useful hemp." It is a high yield commercial fibre crop which flourishes in areas with temperate climates. Hemp grows successfully at a Density of at least 150 plants per square meter, and reaches a height of two to five meters in a three month growing season. Every part of the plant can be used commercially. The stalk of the hemp plant is harvested for its fibres. The fibre length and the content of cellulose and lignin are important materials used in the cordage, textile, paper and fibreboard industries. Hemp Applications Hemp Typical Applications: 1)Energy source (whole plant) 2) Building material (bast, core or whole plant) 3) Paper (bast, core or whole plant) 4) Textiles (bast) 5) Oil (seed) 6) Plastics filler 7) Animal bedding 8) Automobile parts 9) Alternative insulation
Hemp Life Cycle Basic raw material grown by mainly grown by local farmers A renewable resource Low embodied energy Requires no pesticides or chemicals After cultivation the ground is loose and weed free. Hemp Cultivation Hemp sowing April/May Grows up to 5 meters high after days Hemp Harvesting
Hemp natural insulation: Key Features Available loose, in Roll and Slab form It is not affected by mould growth or insect attack as the fibre does not contain proteins No chemical protection required during growth Non-Irritant Effective Thermal Insulation High Thermal Mass Acoustic Properties Hygroscopic Properties Biodegradable C0 2 reduction during growth and as insulation Ecological Certificates
Hemp Natural Installation Lightweight Non-irritant Self Supporting Will Not Sag Can be cut by handsaw or with mechanical saw High flexibility Hemp Natural Insulation An ecological Natural Insulation Material Is made from hemp fibres which absorb atmpospeheric CO2 during cultivation period. Is non-toxic, non-irritant and presents no health hazard whatsoever. Is naturally resistant to insect attack. Can be disposed of safely without creating toxic waste or biodegradability problems. Uses very little energy to manufacture: much less than man made insulation materials. Thermo Hemp requires minimal man made insect pesticides or fertiliser during growth Naturally aerates the soil for greater yields
Hemp Installation Between rafters Between studs Stuffing at hard to reach spaces Hemp Cutting By Hand Or by mechanical saw
In the UK 200 million tonnes of construction waste goes to landfill, 3 times that of domestic waste! This is the equivalent of 1 house been buried in the ground for every 3 built! This is an important consideration when calculating embodied energy for waste Installing Natural Insulation
