1 Ft Prtectin Standard Safety and Envirnment Systems Management System Dcumentatin Ft Prtectin Standard 1.0 PURPOSE This standard specifies the selectin, use, inspectin and care f ft prtectin at SaskPwer. 2.0 DEFINITIONS 2.1 Chainsaw-prtective ftwear Bts that are designed t prevent a chainsaw frm cutting int the shin, ankle, ft, and tes. 2.2 Cnductive ftwear A bt r she designed t cntinuusly electrically grund the ft and thereby prevent an electrical discharge that might ignite vlatile, flammable material in clse prximity t the sle. 2.3 Electric shck-resistant (ESR) ftwear Ftwear that has a sle and heel cnstructed f electrically insulating materials that prvides prtectin against electric shck t the bttm f the ft. At the time f manufacturing, ESR ftwear at dry cnditins shall withstand a test ptential f 18 kv 60 Hz fr 1 minute withut discharge t grund. The leakage current shall nt exceed 1 ma when tested in accrdance with CAN/CSA Z Clause Static-dissipative ftwear A bt r she designed t cntinuusly dissipate electrstatic charges (nt intended fr use in envirnments where explsive hazards exist). 2.5 Super static-dissipative ftwear A bt r she designed t cntinuusly dissipate electrstatic charges when wrking with electrnics and sensitive instruments (nt intended fr use in envirnments where explsive hazards exist). 2.6 Metatarsal prtectin An integral cmpnent that prtects the cmplete tp side f the ft. 2.7 Permanently marked Given a marking that is intended t remain in the applied psitin and remain legible fr the lifetime f the ftwear under nrmal wear cnditins. 2.8 Prtective ftwear A bt r she that prvides the wearer with a degree f prtectin against injury as specified in CSA Standard Z Prtective sle plate An integral cmpnent in the ftwear that prvides puncture prtectin t the sle f the ft Prtective tecap A cmpnent designed t prvide te prtectin that is an integral and permanent part f the ftwear. 1 f 8

2 Ft Prtectin Standard Safety and Envirnment Systems Management System Dcumentatin 2.11 Safety Bts Ftwear that prvides CSA Grade 1 te prtectin, a puncture resistant sle plate, a minimum 6 inch high ankle prtectin and electric shck-resistance (ESR) in accrdance with the CAN/CSA Z Standard Third Party Third party standards are develped frm utside agencies and represent a cnsensus f best practice acrss industry. 3.0 METHOD / PRACTICE 3.1 Selectin Prtective ftwear shall meet the requirements f hazard/aspect identificatin and risk assessment. Refer t Exhibit A Hazard Cnsideratin Selecting Prtective Ftwear and Refer t Exhibit B - Guidelines fr Selecting Prtective Ftwear. Prtective ftwear shall meet the requirements f CSA Standards Z Prtective Ftwear and Z Guideline n Selectin, Care, and Use f Prtective Ftwear. 3.2 Prvisining Prtective ftwear shall have CSA Grade 1 te prtectin and a puncture resistant sle plate. Prtective ftwear shall be electric shck-resistant. Where ankle prtectin is required, safety bts shall have a minimum 6 inch high ankle prtectin. Where slip hazards are identified, safety ftwear shall be equipped with slip resistant prperties. Prtective ftwear, when required, shall be supplied thrugh the Divisin purchasing prcess r accrding t the unin cllective bargaining agreements. Grade 1 prtective ftwear shall be identified by a green triangular patch n bt. Refer t Exhibit C Prtective Ftwear Markings. Electric shck-resistant (ESR) ftwear shall be identified by a white rectangular patch cntaining the mega symbl (Ω) n the right bt. Refer t Exhibit C Prtective Ftwear Markings. Specialized ft prtectin shall meet the SaskPwer Specialized Ft Prtectin Standards. Althugh the Saskatchewan Occupatinal Health and Safety Regulatins, 1996 d nt explicitly state that ft prtectin shall meet the CAN/CSA standard, this is the technical perfrmance standard fr ft prtectin used by SaskPwer. ASTM F Standard Specificatin fr Perfrmance Requirements fr Prtective (Safety) Te Cap Ftwear are NOT apprved fr use as equivalent t Grade 1 prtective ftwear: 2 f 8

3 Ft Prtectin Standard Safety and Envirnment Systems Management System Dcumentatin 3.3 Use ASTM F prtective ftwear bearing a label with the text EH and PR currently d meet the same electric shck-resistance (EH) specificatin and puncture resistance (PR) prtective sle requirements as CAN/CSA ASTM F prtective ftwear d NOT meet CAN/CSA Grade 1 te impact criteria. ASTM F has nly ne class f te impact prtectin, which is Class 75 ftwear (75 lbf = jules te impact energy cmpared t the 125 jule requirement f CSA Grade 1). ASTM F prtective ftwear slightly exceed CAN/CSA Grade 2 te impact criteria but nly in Men s size 9 and under and Female s size 7 and under. Larger sizes d nt meet CAN/CSA Grade 2 te impact criteria. Prtective ftwear shall be wrn where hazard identificatin and risk assessment identify the requirement. Exceptins shall be dcumented at the Divisin level. Prtective ftwear shall be used as per the manufacturer specificatins. Laces shall be tied s that neither the laces nr the fit f the bt can cause tripping hazards. 3.4 Inspectin Prtective ftwear shall be inspected fr damage that culd affect its ability t prvide prtectin befre each use. Inspect prtective ftwear fr: 3.5 Care cracks in the sles breaks in the leather expsed tecaps Prtective ftwear shall be cleaned and stred accrding t the manufacturer s specificatins. Prtective ftwear shall be replaced when damage culd affect its ability t prvide prtectin.
