The engineer will require the following information: Building Site Address. Overall height of building. Cladding Type. Vertical Span of Stud. Grid Reference (if available). For Technical Help, please contact: infinityprojects@kingspan.com or
1. The Project Screen [Job No:] (Max. 8 Characters) This can be your own internal number or a Kingspan Steel Building Solutions project reference. [Project Name:] Project Reference, Site Location etc. for example: ABC Building. [Delivery to Site Date:] The first date SFS is likely to be delivered to site. (This is not a system requirement) [Site address:] and [postcode:] is important to a) ascertain delivery instructions / charges and b) work out wind loadings. [Grid Reference:] For example: SP , these can be found on: this along with the post code helps the engineer ascertain the optimal wind load calculation by checking the surrounding area etc. [Client Reference:] & [Client Name:] Site specific project number / reference and who the Main Contractor, Sub-Contractor or Client is. Checking Engineer:] & [Author:] Who has created the Kingframe Infinity file and/if an engineer has checked the proposal (Clients Engineer or Kingspan). Wind loads can be obtained at: infinityprojects@kingspan.com or Please contact your Area Sales Manager for more information. The engineer will require the following information: Building Site Address (including Postcode). Overall height of building (m). Cladding Type (Masonry, Rainscreen & Render etc.). Vertical Span of Stud (if known). Grid Reference (if available)
2. Options [Design Engine:] British Standards or Eurocode. It is important to check with the site project engineer what the building envelope is to be designed to as it can affect the overall specification; default is British Standards. When a windload is requested our engineers will give you two i) British Standard and ii) Eurocode, it is then your decision to choose which standard to use. [System:] Although Kingframe Infinity allows you to have different stud specifications in the same file it is important to set a default size for the global system settings for example: 70, 100 or 150mm. All section sizes are in our current SFS Steel Framing System Price List. Please contact your Area Sales Manager for more information. Note: Kingspan SBS can manufacture other sizes (based on a minimum order quantity). Preferred Track Length:] 3m or 4m, this is primarily for head and base track sections and will be reflected in the report / Bill of materials, however Lintel / Cill sections will be cut to size as indicated on the drawing. Default is 3000mm. [Deflection Limit L/:] 360 is the default setting; however this can be confirmed the site specific structural engineer. Default is L/360 Fig.a1: Deflection excerpts from Deflection Guidance Note
Fig.a2: Deflection Head Bracket Fig.a3: Deflection Head Slot (Primary Detail) Note: Deflection Head Brackets (DHB) will need to be used on angled frames with pitches more than 10 [Manufactured Tolerance:] This is set to a default value of 50mm, the lengths of studs will be quoted and manufactured to take into account this tolerance to account for any site anomalies or an allowance for estimating. However the individual frame drawings will show the actual cut length required. For example: Structural opening of 3000mm - 25mm Deflection Head (1.8mm) and (1.2mm) Base Track material thicknesses = a stud length of 2972mm. Default is 50mm [Preferred jamb Type:] Heavy Gauge Stud or Use General Stud. Default is Heavy Gauge Stud; most sub-contractors prefer single heavier gauge stud as this reduces material and labour cost (where possible). Fig.b1: Heavier Gauge Single Jamb Stud Fig.b2: Nested Jamb Stud using same specification Note: Using a single heavier gauge stud onsite will introduce another specification and will need to be controlled accordingly, however the product code is clearly marked on every Kingframe Stud. xiv) [Maximum Frame Height:] 5m Max. Frames that are higher than this require consultation with Kingspan Technical: infinityprojects@kingspan.com or Please contact your Area Sales Manager for further information.
[Track Gauge:] Kingspan SBS offers a variety of sections for greater flexibility; our 1.8mm head track will work in 90% to 95% of all frame designs and is the most cost effective engineered solution. However on taller spans and/ or high wind loads it might be more cost effective to use a 2mm head track. This can be altered at a later stage and explained in later tutorials. Default is 1.8mm [Safety Factor:] This is governed by either selecting British Standards or EuroCodes, It is important to check with the project engineer what the building envelope is to be designed to as it can affect the stud specification. [Windpost:] NonKSWP or KinPOST, a Non Kingspan Wind Post or KingPOST will be specified for any large openings that require it depending on user preference and will be shown on the panel drawings and bill of materials (Note: for the NonKSWP no price will be shown on the BOM). Fig.c1: Non Kingspan Wind Post detail
The KingPOST is a wind moment post designed and supplied by Kingspan Steel Building Solutions. The KingPOST is an alternative for bespoke hot rolled steel posts and is used to provide restraint to the SFS system on applications such as large spanning windows or parapets. It offers a standard off the shelf solution that can be used to form a range of cantilevers. The base is a standard assembly to which light gauge steel studs can be fixed to form the final arrangement. Fig.c2: KingPOST Detail min 10mm
Tips, Tricks & Notes Summary. Any panel with more than a 10º pitch will require Deflection Head Brackets (DHB) instead of the preferred standard Slotted Studs. When Masonry is selected in the Cladding Load dialogue box the program will automatically add Brick Tie studs either side of an opening. Maximum Overall Width of a frame = 10,000mm and Maximum Height of a frame = 5,000mm. If the project exceeds the maximum height then contact Kingspan Technical or your Area Sales Manager for more information. On high vertical spans and high wind loads changing the top track to a 2mm Section can sometimes reduce the stud specification, this can be cost effective especially on large areas, however 95% of the time a 1.8mm head track will be the best value engineered option. On high vertical spans and high wind loads reducing the deflection limit from 25mm to 15mm can sometimes reduce the specification of a frame, however you will need to seek clarification from the site engineer on the live load deflection criteria. The introduction of a Structural Mid-Height Noggin may reduce the stud specification. Mid-Height Noggins maybe required on vertical spans greater than 4000mm. On large window openings Kingframe Infinity will sometimes specify compound lintels, these can be made up of 3 or 5 sections. However in some instances we can specify bracing above a window to support the loads and reduce the material specification of the lintel, and sometimes this removes a compound lintel altogether. The Manufactured Tolerance will be added to the Bill of Materials but is not shown in the panel drawing. The frame height in for example is 3000mm high; the Stud height is 3021mm, this is because it has taken off 25mm deflection + material thicknesses of Head and Base Track and added a manufacturing tolerance of 50mm, which is reflected in the cost. It may be worthwhile tidying the drawing using AutoCAD or equivalent, ensuring all geometry is on the Model tab, however this is not a necessity, but may speed up the framing process. It is important that the Building Extents box is closed, otherwise Infinity might not frame properly. It is important to select within the Building Extents box, otherwise Infinity might not frame properly. Infinity will select Opening and Cut Out automatically in Elevation mode when creating openings. The resolution of an imported PDF will be reduced to keep the file size down. It is always important to import a PDF with reference dimensions so the scale can be calculated. When selected, the border of the PDF should be dashed with four square boxes. Kingframe Infinity will not allow to calculate frames without first specifying Wind and Cladding Zones. The project will need to be saved before a report can be generated. Wind loads can be obtained at: infinityprojects@kingspan.com or Please contact your Area Sales Manager for more information. The engineer will require the following information: Building Site Address (including Postcode) Overall height of building (m) Cladding Type (Masonry, Rainscreen & Render etc.) Vertical Span of Stud (if known) Grid Reference (if available)
