1 SECTION HEALTHCARE CASEWORK PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. Section Includes: 1. Stainless-steel medical casework. 2. Stainless-steel countertops and integral sinks. 3. Stainless-steel shelving. 4. Surgery blanket warming cabinet recessed console. 5. Surgery supply cabinet recessed console. 6. Surgery table accessories recessed console. 7. Custom surgery technology cabinet recessed console. B. Related Sections: 1. Division 6 Section "Rough Carpentry Miscellaneous Carpentry" for wood blocking for anchoring casework. 2. Division 6 Section "Interior Architectural Woodwork" for plastic-laminate and solid-surfacing material countertops. 3. Division 16 Sections for electrical connection of light fixtures and other electrical devices built into casework. 1.3 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS A. Delegated Design: Design healthcare casework, including comprehensive engineering analysis by a qualified professional engineer, using seismic performance requirements indicated. 1.4 SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: For each type of product indicated. B. Shop Drawings: Include plans, elevations, sections, details, and attachments to other work. 1. Indicate locations of blocking and reinforcements required for installing casework. 2. Indicate hardware locations. HEALTHCARE CASEWORK
2 3. Indicate locations of and clearances from adjacent walls, doors, windows, other building components, and equipment. 4. Indicate locations of field-made joints in stainless-steel countertops. C. Samples for Initial Selection: For units with factory-applied color finishes. D. Samples for Verification: Full-size units of each type of exposed hardware indicated. E. Delegated-Design Submittal: For healthcare casework indicated to comply with seismic performance requirements, including analysis data signed and sealed by the qualified professional engineer responsible for their preparation. 1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Source Limitations: Obtain healthcare casework through one source from a single manufacturer. B. Product Designations: Drawings indicate sizes and configurations of healthcare casework by referencing designated manufacturer's catalog numbers. Other manufacturers' metal medical casework of similar sizes, similar door and drawer configurations, and complying with the Specifications may be considered. Refer to Division 1 Section "Product Requirements." C. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA 70 by a qualified testing agency, and marked for intended location and application. D. Keying Conference: Conduct conference at Project site. Incorporate keying conference decisions into final keying requirements. E. Preinstallation Conference: Conduct conference at the Project site. 1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Protect finished surfaces during handling and installation with protective covering of polyethylene film or other suitable material. 1.7 COORDINATION A. Coordinate layout and installation of framing and reinforcements for support of healthcare casework. 1.8 EXTRA MATERIALS A. Furnish complete touchup kit for each type and color of healthcare casework provided. Include fillers, primers, paints, and other materials necessary to perform permanent repairs to damaged casework finish. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MODULAR CASEWORK A. Modular casework shall be fully recessed Amsco OR Storage Console as manufactured by Steris Corporation or approved equal from listed manufactures. HEALTHCARE CASEWORK
3 1. Table Accessory Cabinet: Cabinet is 48in wide x 60in tall x 18in deep and fitted with two stainless-steel doors. The interior side, back walls are masonite peg-board with a silver painted finish; furnished with 25 zinc-plated hooks. The inside of each door shall have a stainless-steel bracket with three laterally adjustable hooks. Each door double-panel construction, with internal, sound deadening substrate mounted on stainless-steel, industrial grade hinges and have a concealed latch with chromium-plated brass knob. The doors close flush with the cabinet face. Space between the door and frame does not exceed 1/8. Each cabinet has a 1-1/4 exceed 1/8 wide frame fitted edge. 2. Miscellaneous Supply Cabinet: Cabinet is 48in wide x 60in tall x 18in deep with twin tempered glass doors. Each cabinet has a 1-1/4 wide frame fitted edge. The inside corners have no visible seams. Tempered glass is set in neoprene channels and retained, on the inside, by a removable stainless-steel frame. Door hardware and fit are the same as the table accessory cabinet. Each of the cabinets contain three stainless-steel height-adjustable shelves and a fixed bottom shelf. All shelf edges are flanged down 1 ; front and rear edges flanged 45 for additional rigidity. The sides are notched to accommodate height-adjustable shelves. The shelves are adjustable in 1 increments. 3. Warming Cabinet: Cabinet is heated dual compartment, 48in wide x 60in tall x 18in deep: The door and walls are dual-panel construction, 18-gauge stainless steel with fiberglass insulation. The door includes a heat-resistant sealing gasket. The heated upper chamber is controlled with a temperature selector. It has a high temperature range of F, a medium temperature range of F, and a low temperature range of F. The lower chamber holds 24 square, 2-liter flasks. The walls, sides and doors are single-sheet steel. The doors are dual-panel construction and insulated with a fiberglass insulation. The lower chamber is equipped with a heater that provides a fixed 120 F ± 20 F temperature range. Cabinets shall be high quality 18 gauge stainless steel. All facia weldments shall be ground and polished smooth and flush with adjacent surfaces. The modular cabinets shall be designed for recess mounting; the cabinets shall conceal the wall opening without the need for additional trim strips. General Contractor shall provide bucks, grounds and other supports required for a recessed installation. B. Provide channel spreaders to properly interconnect all cabinets. 2.2 MANUFACTURERS A. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide products by one of the following available manufacturers offering products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. 4 2.3 CASEWORK MATERIALS A. Steel Sheet: Cold-rolled commercial steel sheet, complying with ASTM A 1008/A 1008M; matte finish; suitable for exposed applications. B. Nominal Steel Thicknesses for Enameled-Steel Medical Casework: 1. Sides, Ends, Fixed Backs, Bottoms, Cabinet Tops, Soffits, and Items Not Otherwise Indicated: inch (1.21 mm). Bottoms may be inch (0.91 mm) if reinforced. 2. Back Panels, Doors, Drawer Fronts and Bodies, and Shelves: inch (0.91 mm) except inch (1.21 mm) for unreinforced shelves more than 36 inches (900 mm) long. 3. Intermediate Horizontal Rails, Center Posts, and Top Gussets: inch (1.52 mm). 4. Drawer Runners and Hinge Reinforcements: inch (1.90 mm). 5. Leveling and Corner Gussets: inch (2.66 mm). C. Stainless-Steel Sheet: ASTM A 240/A 240M, Type 304, stretcher-leveled standard of flatness. D. Nominal Stainless-Steel Thicknesses for Stainless-Steel Medical Casework: 1. Sides, Ends, Fixed Backs, Bottoms, Cabinet Tops, Soffits, and Items Not Otherwise Indicated: inch (1.27). Bottoms may be inch (0.95 mm) if reinforced. 2. Back Panels, Doors, Drawer Fronts and Bodies, and Shelves: inch (0.95 mm) except inch (1.27 mm) for unreinforced shelves more than 36 inches (900 mm) long. 3. Intermediate Horizontal Rails, Center Posts, Tubular Legs, and Top Gussets: inch (1.59 mm). 4. Drawer Runners and Hinge Reinforcements: inch (1.98 mm). 5. Leveling and Corner Gussets: inch (2.78 mm). E. Glass for Glazed Doors: Clear laminated tempered glass complying with ASTM C 1172, Kind LT, Condition A, Type I, Class I, Quality-Q3; with 2 lites not less than 3.0 mm thick and with clear, polyvinyl butyral interlayer. 2.4 CABINET FABRICATION A. General: Assemble and finish units at point of manufacture. Use precision dies for interchangeability of like-size drawers, doors, and similar parts. Perform assembly on precision jigs to provide units that are square. Reinforce units with angles, gussets, and channels. Integrally frame and weld to form a dirt and vermin-resistant enclosure. Maintain uniform clearance around door and drawer fronts of 1/16 to 3/32 inch (1.5 to 2.4 mm). B. Metal Flush Doors: Outer and inner pans that nest into box formation, with full-height channel reinforcements at center of door. Fill doors with noncombustible, sound-deadening material. C. Glazed Doors: Hollow-metal stiles and rails of similar construction as flush doors, with glass held in resilient channels or gasket material. D. Hinged Doors: Mortise for hinges and reinforce with angles welded inside inner pans or hollow metal stiles at hinge edge. E. Metal Drawers: Fronts made from outer and inner pans that nest into box formation, with no raw metal edges at top. Sides, back, and bottom fabricated in one piece with rolled or formed top of sides for stiffening and comfortable grasp for drawer removal. HEALTHCARE CASEWORK
5 F. Metal Shelves: Front, back, and ends formed down, with edges returned horizontally at front and back to form reinforcing channels. Provide clips, brackets, pilasters or other means to support shelves from cabinet ends and allow height of shelves to be adjusted in increments of not more than 2 inches (50 mm). G. Sloping Tops: Unless tops are concealed by other construction, provide sloping tops on cabinets with tops 60 inches (1524 mm) or more above the finished floor. Slope tops 25 degrees or more and construct of same material and with same finish as cabinets. H. Toe Space: Unless casework is indicated to be built-in, provide metal toe space, fully enclosed, 4 inches (100 mm) high by 3 inches (75 mm) deep, with no open gaps or pockets. I. Filler Strips: Provide as needed to close spaces between cabinets and walls, ceilings, and indicated equipment. Fabricate from same material and with same finish as cabinets and with hemmed or flanged edges. J. Trim Flanges: Formed metal trim fabricated from same material and with same finish as cabinets. Provide at perimeter of recessed cabinets. 2.5 STAINLESS-STEEL FINISH A. Grind and polish surfaces to produce uniform, directional satin finish matching No. 4 finish with no evidence of welds and free of cross scratches. Run grain with long dimension of each piece. B. When polishing is completed, passivate and rinse surfaces. Remove embedded foreign matter and leave surfaces clean. 2.6 CABINET HARDWARE A. General: Provide healthcare casework manufacturer's standard, commercial-quality, heavy-duty hardware complying with requirements indicated for each type. B. Continuous Hinges: Stainless-steel continuous hinges complying with BHMA A156.9, Grade 1. Provide for narcotics cabinets and specimen pass-through cabinets. C. Hinged Door and Drawer Pulls: Stainless-steel, back-mounted pulls. 1. Design: Wire pulls. 2. Overall Size: As selected from manufacturer's full range. D. Sliding Door Pulls: Stainless-steel recessed flush pulls. Provide 2 pulls for drawers more than 24 inches (600 mm) wide. 1. Design and Size: As selected from manufacturer's full range. E. Door Catches: Nylon-roller spring catches. Provide 2 catches on doors more than 48 inches (1200 mm) high. F. Drawer Slides: Side-mounted, zinc-plated steel, self-closing, ball-bearing drawer slides; designed to prevent rebound when drawers are closed; complying with BHMA A156.9, Type B Provide Grade 1 for drawers not more than 6 inches (150 mm) high and 24 inches (600 mm) wide. 2. Provide Grade 1HD-100 for drawers more than 6 inches (150 mm) high or 24 inches (600 mm) wide. HEALTHCARE CASEWORK
6 3. Provide Grade 1 for computer keyboard shelves. 4. Standard Duty (Grade 1): Full -extension type. 5. Heavy Duty (Grade 1HD-100: Full-extension type. G. Label Holders: Stainless steel, aluminum, or chrome plated; sized to receive standard label cards approximately 1 by 2 inches (25 by 50 mm), attached with screws or rivets. Provide where indicated. H. Locks: Cam or half-mortise type with 5-pin tumbler; brass with chrome-plated finish; complying with BHMA A156.11, Type E07281, E07261, E07111, or E Provide minimum of two keys per lock and two master keys. 2. Provide locks on all drawers and doors. 3. Keying: Key locks within each room alike, key each room separately Key each lock separately. 4. Master Key System: Key all locks to be operable by master key. I. Sliding-Door Hardware Sets: Healthcare casework manufacturer's standard, to suit type and size of sliding-door units. 2.7 STAINLESS-STEEL COUNTERTOPS, SHELVES AND SINKS A. Countertops: Provide units with smooth surfaces in uniform plane free of defects. Ease exposed edges and corners. Provide front and end overhang of 1 inch (25 mm) over base cabinets. 1. Stainless-Steel Sheet: ASTM A 240/A 240M, Type 304, not less than inch (1.59-mm) nominal thickness, with No. 4 directional satin finish. 2. Extend top down 1 inch (25 mm) at edges with a 1/2-inch (13-mm) return flange under frame. Apply heavy coating of heat-resistant, sound-deadening mastic to undersurface. 3. Form backsplash coved to and integral with top surface. 4. Provide rolled edge unless otherwise indicated. 5. Provide raised (marine) edge around perimeter of countertops containing sinks; pitch two ways to sink to provide drainage without channeling or grooving. 6. Reinforce underside of countertop with channels or use thicker metal sheet where necessary to insure rigidity without deflection. 7. Weld shop-made joints. 8. Fabricate units for installation without field-made joints. 9. Fabricate units for field assembly, where necessary, using welded joints. 10. Where stainless-steel sinks or cup sinks occur in stainless-steel countertops, factory weld into one integral unit. 11. After fabricating and welding, grind surfaces smooth and polish as needed to produce uniform, directionally textured finish with no evidence of welds and free of cross scratches. Passivate and rinse surfaces; remove embedded foreign matter and leave surfaces clean. B. Wall-Mounted Shelves: Made from stainless-steel sheet, ASTM A 240/A 240M, Type 304, not less than inch (1.27-mm) nominal thickness, with No. 4 directional satin finish. Weld shop-made joints. Fold down or up front edge 3/4 inch (19 mm); fold up back edge 3 inches (75 mm). Provide integral stiffening brackets, formed by folding up ends 3/4 inch (19 mm) and welding to upturned back edge. After fabricating, grind welds smooth and polish as needed to produce uniform, directionally textured finish with no evidence of welds and free of cross scratches. Passivate and rinse surfaces; remove embedded foreign matter and leave surfaces clean. C. Sinks: Provide sizes indicated or healthcare casework manufacturer's closest standard size of equal or greater volume as approved by Architect. HEALTHCARE CASEWORK
7 1. Stainless-Steel Sheet: ASTM A 240/A 240M, Type 304, not less than inch (1.27-mm) nominal thickness. Fabricate with corners rounded and coved to at least 5/8-inch (16-mm) radius. Slope sink bottoms to outlet. Provide double-wall construction for sink partitions with top edge rounded to at least 1/2-inch (13-mm) diameter. Provide continuous butt-welded joints After fabricating and welding, grind surfaces smooth and polish as needed to produce uniform finish with no evidence of welds and free of cross scratches. Passivate and rinse surfaces; remove embedded foreign matter and leave surfaces clean. 2. Punch holes for fittings at factory. 3. Provide with stainless-steel strainers and tailpieces, NPS 1-1/2 (DN 40) unless otherwise indicated. 4. Where indicated, provide stainless-steel overflow of standard beehive or open-top design with separate stainless-steel strainer. Height 2 inches (50 mm) less than sink depth. 5. Apply 1/8-inch- (3-mm-) thick coating of heat-resistant, sound-deadening mastic to undersink surfaces. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Examine areas, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances, location of reinforcements, and other conditions affecting performance of healthcare casework. 1. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. 3.2 INSTALLATION OF CABINETS AND SHELVES A. Install level, plumb, and true; shim as required, using concealed shims. Where healthcare casework abuts other finished work, apply filler strips and scribe for accurate fit, with fasteners concealed where practical. Do not exceed the following tolerances: 1. Variation of Tops of Base Cabinets from Level: 1/16 inch in 10 feet (1.5 mm in 3 m). 2. Variation of Bottoms of Upper Cabinets from Level: 1/8 inch in 10 feet (3 mm in 3 m). 3. Variation of Faces of Cabinets from a True Plane: 1/8 inch in 10 feet (3 mm in 3 m). 4. Variation of Adjacent Cabinet Surfaces from a True Plane (Lippage): 1/32 inch (0.8 mm). 5. Variation in Alignment of Adjacent Door and Drawer Edges: 1/16 inch (1.5 mm). B. Recessed Cabinets: Set cabinets in openings and fasten to partition framing, wood blocking, or reinforcements in partitions with fasteners spaced 24 inches (600 mm) o.c. Bolt adjacent cabinets together with joints flush, tight, and uniform. C. Base Cabinets: Fasten cabinets to partition framing, wood blocking, or reinforcements in partitions with fasteners spaced not more than 24 inches (600 mm) o.c. Bolt adjacent cabinets together with joints flush, tight, and uniform. D. Wall Cabinets: Fasten to hanging strips, masonry, partition framing, blocking, or reinforcements in partitions. Fasten each cabinet through back, near top, at not less than 24 inches (600 mm) o.c. E. Wall-Mounted Shelves: Fasten to masonry, partition framing, blocking, or reinforcements in partitions. Fasten each shelf through upturned back edge at not less than 24 inches (600 mm) o.c. F. Install hardware uniformly and precisely. Set hinges snug and flat in mortises. HEALTHCARE CASEWORK
8 G. Adjust healthcare casework and hardware so doors and drawers align and operate smoothly without warp or bind and contact points meet accurately. Lubricate operating hardware as recommended by manufacturer. 3.3 INSTALLATION OF COUNTERTOPS A. Abut top and edge surfaces in one true plane with flush joints and with internal supports placed to prevent deflection. Locate joints only where shown on Shop Drawings. B. Field-Made Joints: Provide welded joints in tops. Grind and polish surfaces to produce uniform, directionally textured finish with no evidence of welds and free of cross scratches. Passivate and rinse surfaces; remove embedded foreign matter and leave surfaces clean. C. Field-Made Joints: Provide tight-fitting joints in tops using adhesives and fasteners recommended by manufacturer. Prepare edges to be joined in shop so Project-site processing of top and edge surfaces is not required. D. Fastening: Secure countertops to cabinets with Z-type fasteners or equivalent, using two or more fasteners at each cabinet front, end, and back. E. Provide chemical-resistant, permanently elastic sealing compound for closures at junctures of top, curb, and splash with walls as recommended by sealant manufacturer. 3.4 INSTALLATION OF SERVICE FITTINGS A. Comply with requirements in Division 15 Sections for installing water and compressed-air service fittings. B. Install fittings according to Shop Drawings and manufacturer's written instructions. Set bases and flanges of sink- and countertop-mounted fittings in sealant recommended by manufacturer of sink or countertop material. Securely anchor fittings to healthcare casework unless otherwise indicated. 3.5 CLEANING AND PROTECTING A. Clean finished surfaces, touch up as required, and remove or refinish damaged or soiled areas to match original factory finish as approved by Architect. B. Protect countertop surfaces during construction with 6-mil- (0.15-mm-) thick polyethylene or other suitable water-resistant covering. Tape to underside of countertop at minimum of 48 inches (1200 mm) o.c. END OF SECTION HEALTHCARE CASEWORK
