1 SECTION ALUMINUM GEODESIC DOME PART 1 - GENERAL A. Description This section includes materials, fabrication and erection of the aluminum geodesic dome. B. Related Work Specified Elsewhere 1. General Concrete Construction: Factory Coated Bolted Steel Water Tank: Bolted Stainless Steel Water Tank: C. Submittals 1. Submit shop drawings in accordance with the following. 2. Submit dimensional drawings. Show dimensions, sizes, thicknesses, gages, materials of construction, and finishes of panels and structural members. 3. Show joint attachment method. 4. Submit erection procedure. 5. For dome designs other than those utilizing computer programs, submit engineering design calculations for structural and covering components. Design calculations shall be signed by civil or structural engineer registered in the state of North Dakota. F or computer programmed designs, submit the stress values utilized in the analysis and a c ertificate, signed by a civil or structural engineer registered in the state of North Dakota, stating the design criteria and procedures used and attesting to the adequacy and accuracy of design. 6. Submit certificates that the design meets the applicable local and regional building codes. 7. Submit anchor details and anchor bolt sizes. 8. Submit detail of attachment to concrete structure including bearing slip pad, hold down system, seal for potable water tank, etc. D. Unit Responsibility The Contractor shall assign the design, fabrication, and erection of the dome to a m anufacturer who specializes in such structures. E. Manufacturer s Services Provide manufacturer s services at the jobsite for the minimum man-days listed below, travel time excluded: One man-day to instruct the Owner s personnel in the maintenance and safety procedures for the dome. 2 PART 2 - MATERIALS A. Manufacturers Dome shall be designed, fabricated, and erected by TEMCOR, Torrance, California; CONSERVATEK INC., Conroe, Texas; Geodome, a di vision of CST Industries Inc., Kansas City, Kansas; Columbian TecTank, Kansas City, Kansas; or approved equal. B. Dome Design Criteria 1. Dome shall be spherical structure conforming to the dimensions shown on the drawings and having the following characteristics: a. Fully triangulated space truss structure with non-corrugated closure panels. b. Clear span and designed to be self-supporting from the periphery structure with primary horizontal thrust contained by an integral tension ring. c. Design to allow for thermal expansion/ contraction over a temperature range of -60 F to +140 F. Acceptable bearing surfaces for sliding bearings are Teflon to stainless steel only. Teflon shall not bear on aluminum surfaces. d. Dome structure deadweight shall not exceed 3.5 psf of surface area. 2. The design of the dome shall be in accordance with the following standards and codes: a. Specifications for Aluminum Structures as published by the Aluminum Association. b. AWWA Standard D , Section 13 c. ANSI A58.1 d. Uniform Building Code. 3. Design dome surface paneling as a watertight system under all design loan and temperature conditions. 4. Design dome frame and skin for full dead load plus the following snow load conditions. a. Symmetrical snow loading of 25 psf over the total plan area, in accordance with AWWA D103. b. Nonsymmetrical snow loading of 25 psf on one-half the dome plan area with zero snow load on the other half of the dome. c. Wind loading of 100 mph in accordance with ANSI A58.1 exposure C. d. Combined Loads: Basic snow plus dead load combinations for the dome analysis shall be in accordance with ANSI A58.1. Apply snow load as live load for load combinations and apply snow and wind load concurrently. 5. Provide a means of securing panels to the frame to withstand the following vertical loads without exceeding the specified allowable stresses: a. Two concentrated loads of 250 pounds each, applied simultaneously on two separate 1- square-foot areas of the panel. b. A distributed load of 60 psf over the total panel. c. The use of attachment fasteners which penetrate both the panel and flange of the structure member is expressly prohibited. SECTION ALUMINUM GEODESIC DOME 2

Doors, hatches and vents 6061-T6, 6005A-T H34,or 5052-H36 aluminum, nominal thickness. 7. Battens to secure triangular 6063-T6 aluminum closure panels and peripherals flashing to the dome struts shall be designed to firmly interlock with panels D. Sealants Sealants shall be silicon and conforming to Federal Specification TT-S-00230: Dow 790, GE 1200, or approved equal. E. Gaskets Gaskets shall be Neoprene conforming to ASTM C509-0 or silicon, GE No. SE-44/88, or approved equal. F. Expansion Anchor Bolts Type 316 stainless steel per Section G. Spare Parts Provide a minimum of 5% excess over the required amount of nuts, bolts, screws, washers, and other required fasteners with the dome. Provide individual boxes for each item (nuts, bolts, washers, etc.). I. Access Hatch Provide an access hatch at the location shown on the Drawings. Hatch shall exclude rain and snow from entering the tank. Hatch shall be hinged. Furnish hatch with hasp and padlock. Clear opening size 3-0 x 3 0. 4 J. Vent Provide a frost-free vent at the locations shown on the Drawings. Vents shall exclude rain and snow from entering the tank and shall have a noncorrosive insect screen. Minimum inside diameter of neck shall be 24 inches. PART 3 - EXECUTION A. Fabrication and Erection 1. The Contractor shall inspect the top of the reservoir wall with the Owner s Representative. Contractor shall repair all concrete surface defects and irregularities prior to erection of the dome. 2. Construct dome plumb level, and in proper alignment. Field re-fabrication of structural components or panels will not be accepted. Forcing or springing of the structure to achieve fit up during construction is expressly forbidden and is not acceptable. 3. All sealant joints shall be tooled slightly concave after installing sealant. Keep sealant confined to joint area. Remove sealant outside of joints. Keep panels free of misplaced sealant. 4. Cover, seal, and clamp raw edges of panels in an interlocking manner. Prevent slipping or disengagement under all load and temperature conditions. B. Painting and Coating Insulate metals incompatible with aluminum by coating the aluminum per Section Section H. C. Installing Gaskets Provide gaskets where other dissimilar metals come in contact. All gasket materials shall be continuous, splices will not be allowed. D. Field Testing 1. After the dome has been erected and the panels installed, conduct a field test as follows: On four separate panels selected by the Owner s Representative on the dome, apply a uniform load of 90 psf over the entire panel area. The panels shall withstand this load without permanent distortion or buckling. 2. If any one of the panels on a given dome fails the test, then the Owner s Representative will select another four panels on the dome for testing. If all four panels pass the test then the first panel failure will be disregarded. If one of the second batch of panels fails the tests, then the dome will be considered defective. The Contractor shall then do one of the following: a. Replace all the panels on the dome and retest. b. Test each panel on the dome and replace any panels that fail the test. 3. Replace any rejected panels and retest. E. Service Conditions 1. Assume ambient temperatures outside the dome to be: Minimum: - 60 degrees F Maximum: degrees F 2. The dome will be installed over the circular bolted stainless steel structure. The structure is designed for storage of treated potable water. SECTION ALUMINUM GEODESIC DOME 4

5 3. The air under the dome during design use will have the following characteristics: a. 100 percent saturated water vapor b. Chlorine content up to 3- ppm 4. Water will be pumped into the reservoir at temperatures that vary between 33 F and 60 F. 5. Minimum freeboard distance from top of the wall to water surface will be 12 inches. F. Guarantee The dome materials shall be guaranteed for a p eriod of five (5) years against defective materials and workmanship. END OF SECTION SECTION ALUMINUM GEODESIC DOME 5
