2 SELF-ASSESSMENT CHECKLIST TAFE NSW South Western Sydney Institute Certificate I in General Construction Instructions: Listed below are the Units of Competence a person is expected to hold in order to receive a Certificate I in General Construction, as well as those extra units required by OFT (Office of Fair Trading) for licensing in specific areas. Each unit is identified by its National Code and title, including a brief description of the unit and what a person should be able to demonstrate. There are also a number of key questions for you to answer in relation to each unit that will assist you to decide if you have the required exposure, experience and skill to demonstrate competence in a skills assessment activity. COMPULSORY CORE UNITS Note: All 7 of the following Core Units, plus the NSW module, must be achieved. This may be through demonstration of competence or the provision of sufficient evidence. Training Package: BCG03 General Construction Qualification No: BCG10103 Qualification title: Certificate I in General Construction (tick the appropriate box) UNIT / DESCRIPTION KEY QUESTIONS YES NO A - OHS induction (WorkCover no ) This is a mandatory requirement for all persons entering and working on a building site. BCGCM1001B Follow OH&S policies and procedures identify and control common workplace hazards, prepare safe work method statements (SWMS), select and utilise personal protective equipment (PPE), select and utilise safety signage, barricades and hoardings, identify and select fire fighting equipment, and follow emergency procedures. Can you provide evidence of the 5-hour training program run by accredited WorkCover trainers? This may be in the form of a laminated White-card of an official certificate of training from WorkCover. Can you list six essential items of PPE? Have you prepared, or been involved with the preparation of a SWMS? Can you identify at least three types of fires and suitable fire-fighting equipment for each? Are you familiar with evacuation procedures in relation to an emergency? 3 BCGCM1002B Work effectively in the general construction industry plan and organise your work, work in a team, participate in workplace meetings, and resolve workplace conflict. Understand General Construction industry employment conditions under which you work, the range of employment and career opportunities available in the General Construction industry, and identify your personal educational and career development needs. BCGCM1003B Plan and organise work This unit specifies the competency required to plan allotted tasks to maximise personal productivity on a General Construction site. BCGCM1004B Conduct workplace communication This unit specifies the competency required to communicate effectively with other workers in a general construction workplace environment. BCGCM1005B Carry out measurements and calculations This unit specifies the competency required to carry out measurements and perform simple calculations to determine task and material requirements for a job in a General Construction work environment. BCGCM2001B Read and interpret plans and specifications The unit includes the identification of types of plans and drawings and their functions, the recognition of commonly used symbols and abbreviations, the identification of key features and specifications on a site plan, the comprehension of written job specifications and the recognition of document status and amendment detail. Are you able to set personal and team work goals? Are you able to deal effectively with personal conflict situations? Are you able to identify your own career development needs? Have you run or participated in site meetings? Are you able to work with others and in teams? Are you able to identify tools and materials for most work situations? Are you able to plan for work tasks by preparing a work sequence for at least three common tasks? Can you identify safety signage and understand its meaning? Are you able to understand visual communications? Can you effectively use telephones and other forms of written communication such as , Fax, etc.? Have you actively participated in a site meeting? Can you calculate simple material quantities? Can you calculate the area and volume of a variety of regular and irregular shapes? Are you able to convert metres to millimetres and vice versa? Are you able to accurately use a rule and retractable tape? Can you identify different types of drawings such as floor plans, elevations, etc.? Can you find measurements, symbols and key features of plans for building work? Are you able to recognise amendments to plans and title block details? 4 BCGCM2006B Apply basic levelling procedures This unit specifies the competency required to carry out levelling in a single plane for the purpose of establishing correct and accurate set out of buildings components. Can you transfer levels and record differences in height using a spirit level and straight edge? Can you use basic levelling equipment such as string lines, tapes, survey pegs, plumb bob, etc.? Can you use a Class 1 laser level? Can you use automatic or dumpy levels and read a staff? ELECTIVE UNITS Note: The following 3 Elective Units must be achieved. This may be through demonstration of competence or the provision of sufficient evidence. Candidates are guided to select those units identified as RE (Recommended Elective), as these units are required by OFT for licensing. RE-BCGVE1001B Handle construction materials This unit specifies the competency required to safely manually handle, store and apply environmental management principles associated with carpentry materials and components. RE-BCGVE1002B Undertake a basic construction project This unit specifies the competency required to undertake a basic construction project to provide elementary skills applicable to the construction industry RE-BCGVE1004B Undertake basic estimation and costing This unit specifies the competency required to estimate materials, labour and time requirements and establish costs for a basic construction project. Have you safely handled, stacked and stored a range of construction materials such as solid timber, sheet materials, manufactured timber products? Are you aware of the safety issues related to lifting and handling? Have you used trolleys, pallet jacks, etc. to manually move materials? Are you aware of how to protect timber and other materials from damage while stored onsite? Are you able to select materials from project plans and specifications? Can you check hand tools for serviceability and operation? Can you complete a simple project from a set of plans? Are you able to prepare and setup your workspace to effectively complete a given task? Can you estimate the types and quantities of materials required to complete a construction project? Can you calculate overhead costs? Are you able to estimate and calculate labour costs involved in the completion of a construction project? Have you ever had to file documents for future reference? 5 ADDITIONAL UNITS Note: The following additional units must be achieved where licensing is specific to this area, or, where there is no relevant unit training by the relevant manufacturer or industry supplier must be undertaken. The following groups will need to be satisfied in addition to the Certificate I qualification for the Minor Trades and/or Minor Maintenance/Cleaning licensed areas: Note: These additional units of competency will be assessed on an RPL basis as part of this program via your Portfolio document and during Tutorial 3 Workplace assessment. Where the additional units cannot be satisfied through the recognition process and gap training is required, an additional fee will be applied. (POA) MINOR TRADES Group 1: To undertake kitchen/bathroom bench installation, the following three units must be completed: 1 BCF1000A Prepare for construction process stonemasonry This unit applies to the preparation processes carried out to support the laying or placement of stone. 2 BCGCA2001B Handle carpentry materials This unit specifies the competency required to safely manually handle, store and apply environmental management principles associated with carpentry materials and components. 3 BCGCA2002B Use carpentry tools and equipment - This unit specifies the competency required to safely select and use carpentry tools and equipment. It includes the use of hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, plant and equipment. Can you set out and prepare stone materials ready for use? Can you prepare the work area ready to undertake stonemasonry activities? Can you identify and safely use tools and equipment for stonemasonry activities? Can you identify and select stone to match existing and identify faults/imperfections? Have you safely handled, stacked and stored a range of construction materials such as solid timber, sheet materials, manufactured timber products? Are you aware of the safety issues related to lifting and handling? Have you used trolleys, pallet jacks, etc. to manually move materials? Are you aware of how to protect timber and other materials from damage while stored onsite? Are you able to select and use a range of common hand tools for carpentry work such as a hammer, saws, hand planes, chisels, tin snips, chalk lines, etc.? Can you safely use and maintain a range of portable power tools such as a power saw, planer, router, jig saw, belt sander, hammer drill, etc.? Can you safely use and maintain a range of pneumatic tools such as a nail gun and compressor? 6 Group 2: To undertake shower screen enclosure installation, the following four units must be completed: 1 BCF2018A Apply and install sealant and sealant devices This unit applies to the application of sealants and sealant devices to structures to prevent the penetration of water into a building. 2 BCF2013A Assemble components This unit applies to the assembling of manufactured components to form a completed constructed unit. 3 LMFGG1001A Complete a basic glass and glazing project This unit covers the competency to prepare, fabricate and assemble a basic glass and glazing project. 4 LMFGG3015A Fabricate and install shower screen and wardrobe doors This unit addresses the knowledge and skills required to plan, fabricate and install shower screens and wardrobe doors. Can you clean surfaces ready for sealant application? Are you able to select the correct sealant for the job? Can you apply sealant to manufactures specifications? Can you safely use and apply sealants as specified? Can you identify component parts for location in assembly? Have you had to assemble and hold components in place? Are you able to secure components using adhesives, fasteners and knockdown fittings? Can you protect components from damage during assembly? Can you set out materials according to work instructions and plans? Have you had to fabricate components using basic glass and glazing processing machines? Can you prepare, fabricate and assemble a project using glass less than 6mm thick? Can you identify and select appropriate glass processing tools, materials, equipment, processes and procedures for a given task? Can you select and check tools, materials and equipment for the job? Can you attach fitting in accordance with manufactures instructions? Are you able to select the correct materials, assemble, and install a shower screen and make it waterproof? 7 Group 3: To undertake shade sails and shade systems installation, the following two units must be completed: 1 BCGCO2003B Carry out concreting to simple forms This unit specifies the competency required to safely install formwork, reinforcement, place and finish concrete for the construction of minor slabs, pathways and other minor works to a specified design finish. 2 BCGCM3003B Work safely around power sources, services, assets This unit specifies the competency required to work with or operate plant in or around close proximity of power sources, services and assets for the general safety of personnel and equipment. Have you prepared and constructed formwork for a simple shed or garage slab or concrete paths, driveways, etc.? Can you cut and place steel reinforcement fabric and trench mesh? Have you placed concrete from a truck using the chute and by wheel barrow? Have you hand screeded and finished concrete surfaces with a steel float, wood float, broom finish, etc. to an area of at least 4 m? Can you identify and apply environmental protection requirements in accordance with environmental plans and regulatory obligations? Have you had to contact and work with relevant authorities during the course of your job? Are you able to safely setup plant to comply with safe work method statements and JSA s? Can you safely work around power sources/services/assets? Group 4: To undertake bitumen placement, the following five units must be completed: 1 BCCCM2002B Use small plant and equipment This unit specifies the competency required to use a range of small plant and equipment commonly employed in civil construction activities and sites. It includes the minimum criteria for competency assessment. 2 BCCCM2007B Spread and compact materials manually This unit specifies the competency required to spread and compact soils and aggregate with hand tools, hand tampers and small compaction equipment. Can you apply pre-operational checks according to manufactures specifications? Can you safely use and operate small plant to optimum output in accordance with manufactures specifications? Are you able to safely carryout operator maintenance of small plant and equipment? Can you apply pre-operational checks according to manufactures specifications? Have you had to direct truck movements to deliver materials to the correct location? Are you able consolidate materials are into layers by hand held mechanical compaction equipment? 8 3 BCCBS2001B Conduct tack coat spraying operations This unit specifies the competency required to spray tack coat in asphalt or sprayed sealing operations to prepare for a bituminous surface (or next treatment) to be applied 4 BCCBS2003B Safely handle bituminous materials This unit specifies the competency required to safely handle bituminous materials for the construction and maintenance of pavements. It includes the minimum criteria for competency assessment. 5 BCCBS2002B Hand spread asphalt This unit specifies the competency required to hand spread asphalt to the required line and level for a finished surface. It relates to hand asphalt spreading and levelling conducted before and after compaction Are you able to identify and translate application rates into relevant travel speed and pump characteristics? Have you had to carryout spraying operation adjacent to traffic? Can you conduct, control and monitor hand spraying operations to ensure that materials are sprayed to specification Can you inspect, find faults, record and report on hand spraying equipment? Have you worked with Styrene Butadiene Styrene in accordance with the AAPA code of practice? Do you know the fire precautions you need to take when working with hot bitumen? Can you administer first aid in the case of a bitumen burn? can you extinguish a bitumen fire? Are you able to identify, obtain and implement the required signage from a project traffic management plan? Can you hand place asphalt to a given line and level? Can you identify and repair low spots, high spots and defects in the mat? Have you worked with a paver to lay a minimum of 100m of longitudinal joint and 2 transverse joints? Group 5: To undertake garage door installation: 1 Evidence of training by the relevant manufacturer, industry or supplier. 9 MINOR MAINTENANCE/CLEANING Group 1: To undertake pressure washing/graffiti removal/brick cleaning work, the following unit must be completed: 1 RE- BCGPD3009B Remove graffiti and apply protective coatings - This unit specifies the competency required to remove graffiti and apply preventative materials to different material surfaces to form graffiti resistant surface systems. Have you removed graffiti from two different substrates using two approved cleaning methods? Can you apply sacrificial preventative coatings to different substrates? Can you apply non-sacrificial preventative coatings to different substrates? Group 2: To undertake repair, resurfacing or application of a protective coating to bathroom tiles, baths, etc., the following unit(s) must be completed: 1 RE- BCGPD3010B Apply protective paint coating systems - This unit specifies the competency required to apply specialised paint coating systems as a protective measure against atmospheric conditions, sanitation and hygiene risks and the impacts of high traffic areas. Can you prepare surfaces ready for the application of protective paint coating systems using, for example a heat gun, abrasive blasting, grinding, sanding, sugar soap, chemical stripping etc? Can you apply at least three different protective paint coating systems to Specification? Have you use paint coatings such as polyurethane primer (two pack), epoxy primer (two pack), high build epoxy and high build chlorinated rubber? and/or 2 BCGWF3004B Repair wall and floor tiles This unit specifies the competency required to repair wall and floor, using mortar or adhesive. Can you select, check for serviceability, rectify and report on plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks that are consistent with the requirements of the job prior to commencement? Can you remove tiles without damaging surrounding tiles? Are you able to select and cut replacement tiles to match existing face, size, colour and pattern? 10 Group 3: To undertake non-structural repair work, the following three units must be completed: 1 BCGCA2001B Handle carpentry materials This unit specifies the competency required to safely manually handle, store and apply environmental management principles associated with carpentry materials and components. 2 BCGCA2002B Use carpentry tools and equipment - This unit specifies the competency required to safely select and use carpentry tools and equipment. It includes the use of hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, plant and equipment. 3 BCGPD2003B Remove and replace doors and door and window furniture - This unit specifies the competency required to remove and replace doors and door and window furniture for the purpose of painting or replacement. It does not include the removal of windows or reglazing. Have you safely handled, stacked and stored a range of construction materials such as solid timber, sheet materials, manufactured timber products? Are you aware of the safety issues related to lifting and handling? Have you used trolleys, pallet jacks, etc. to manually move materials? Are you aware of how to protect timber and other materials from damage while stored onsite? Are you able to select and use a range of common hand tools for carpentry work such as a hammer, saws, hand planes, chisels, tin snips, chalk lines, etc.? Can you safely use and maintain a range of portable power tools such as a power saw, planer, router, jig saw, belt sander, hammer drill, etc.? Can you safely use and maintain a range of pneumatic tools such as a nail gun and compressor?
