The course may enhance students opportunities to obtain an apprenticeship in General Construction. The syllabus will provide more detailed information. This course aims to develop knowledge, skills, techniques and appropriate attitudes necessary to carry out general construction tasks and processes, in a safe and efficient manner and to a standard of quality and finish described in units of competency for this qualification. Students will participate in general construction activities safely and effectively, perform basic calculations like adding and subtracting measurements, take measurements from plans, recognise a range of standard drawing symbols and geographic information from site plans, and use simple levelling equipment under supervision. This course enables students to complete their training by applying their skills and knowledge in a supervised general construction environment. This will be achieved by off-the-job practical exercises in NSW controlled workshops and worksites. The mandatory work placement component of this course will provide further opportunities for application of learners skills and knowledge. Work placement Students must undertake 35 hours of work placement for this course. Part-time paid work may fulfil part of the work placement requirement. Work placement module for enrolment is 8266AC. Students must also be enrolled in 1209A OH&S Induction (WorkCover No ). 11 Extract from the Board of Studies Construction Curriculum Framework Stage 6 Syllabus 8.5 Construction Specialisation Study (60 or 120 indicative hours) Purpose The purpose of the specialisation study is to provide students with the opportunity to gain further credit towards Certificate II and III qualifications within general construction. They are available to all students undertaking Construction (240 indicative hours) but are intended specifically for students with particular interest in, and aptitude for, the industry. The maximum number of Preliminary and/or HSC units available from this framework is six units. That is, courses can total up to 360 hours. In addition to courses within the framework students may undertake locally designed Board Endorsed VET courses drawn from the General Construction Training Package (BCG03). Such courses may provide additional HSC credit for students. Before offering the specialisation study, schools should ensure that the RTO undertaking delivery has scope to deliver the relevant qualification. Course structure The specialisation study can consist of units of competency drawn from Construction (240-hour course) not previously attempted by students and/or from the pool of 17 specialisation study units of competency listed in Table 4. Details of the units of competency listed in Table 4 are available in the General Construction Training Package or at Section 15 outlines the qualification packaging rules for each qualification available within the Construction Curriculum Framework. This section should guide the selection of units of competency to meet qualification requirements. It is recommended that the combination of units of competency should be chosen to focus on an occupational outcome. The 60 indicative hour course is accredited for a total of one unit at the Preliminary or HSC level. The 120 indicative hour course is accredited for a total of two units at the Preliminary and/or HSC level. Course requirements Students may only elect to study a specialisation study if they are currently enrolled in, or have completed, the Construction (240 indicative hours) course. 60 indicative hour course: Units should be selected to a minimum of 60 indicative hours. Students must complete a minimum of 14 additional hours of mandatory work placement. 120 indicative hour course: Units should be selected to a minimum of 120 indicative hours. Students must complete a minimum of 35 additional hours of mandatory work placement. Updated February 2006 Construction Page 11 of 16
