2 Physical & Electronic Security Requirements: Electronically Locked Doors: Coordinate with AHJ to determine if electronically locked doors shall fail safe or fail secure. Required Drawing Documentation: Indicate the following security related information (where applicable) on the door schedule and drawings: Typical Electronic Locking Device Details: Include typical door details for required wiring as part of the drawing set for all electronic locking devices on doors. Clearly identify the conduit pathway from the source to the wired door hardware components. Other General Door and Frame Requirements: Minimum Door Width: 36 inches. Minimum Door Height: 84 inches Exterior Doors & Frames Energy Efficiency Performance: Specify exterior door and frame systems with the following minimum energy performance: Thermal Performance: Maryland: W/(m2K) (0.40 U factor) North Carolina: W/(m2K) (0.40 U factor) Montana: W/(m2K) (0.35 U factor) Air Infiltration: Maximum 0.30 cfm/sf. Exterior Doors Physical Security Requirements: Entry Doors: Building entry doors shall comply with NIH Physical Security requirements and approved by the NIH Division of Physical Security. Security Console: A building entry security console may be required near the main building entry doors. If required, console shall include door actuators, telephone/data connections, and a Knox box. Buildings within Access Controlled Campus: Exterior doors in buildings located on a campus with controlled access shall be fully glazed to maximize visibility. Buildings Not Located on Access Controlled Campus: Exterior doors in buildings that are not located on a campus with controlled access shall be aluminum with minimal glazing. Visibility: Locate exterior doors for maximum visibility. General Exterior Door Requirements: Drainage: Slope exterior pavement serving exterior doors away from doors to maintain positive drainage. Aluminum Storefront Doors & Frames: Exterior doors and frames shall be aluminum storefront type: Finish: Anodized finish for all aluminum components. 2

3 Duty: Industry standard; heavy duty, xxxxxx grade Glazing: Building entry and entry vestibule doors shall be fully glazed. Construction: Thermally broken frame construction, closed door tops, seamless construction. Exceptions: Historic Buildings: Provide doors and frames appropriate to existing building context. Wood Doors: Wood doors may be used on historic and residential buildings. All Glass Doors: All glass entrance systems may be used with approval of Project Officer where appropriate and where used in a vestibule configuration. Revolving Doors: Revolving door systems may be used with approval of Project Officer where appropriate for a high traffic entrance. Service Doors: Provide steel doors and frames for service and other heavy duty use exterior doors. Finish: Galvanized, field painted. Construction: Doors: Heavy duty, ANSI A250.8 Level 3 (16 guage), Physical Performance Level A, Model 2, Seamless. Frames: Fully welded, ANSI A250.8, Level 3 (14 guage). 16 guage. All frames must be welded. Steel door frames shall meet the requirements of the SDI Recommended Erection Instructions for Steel Frames. Steel frames to be painted a contrasting color from the door. xxxxxxx Interior Doors & Frames Interior Doors & Frames Types: Interior doors and frames shall be steel, aluminum storefront type, and all glass entrance type. Select door and frame types that are compatible with the building standard for the building in which the door will be installed, the intended function, and the criteria indicated in the following sub-paragraphs. Exceptions: Wood doors and frames may be used when appropriate in historic and residential buildings. Undercut: Interior doors shall be undercut a minimum 1/2" and maximum 3/4". Interior Steel Doors & Frames: Finish: Shop primed, field painted. Construction: Doors: Heavy duty, ANSI A250.8 Level 2 (18 guage), Physical Performance Level A, Model 2, Seamless, Xxxxx cores. Frames: Fully welded, 16 guage. Steel frames to be painted a contrasting color from the door. Xxxxx. Interior Aluminum Storefront Doors and Frames: Finish: Anodized finish for all aluminum components. 3

4 Duty: Industry standard; xxxxxx grade Construction: Non-thermally broken frame construction, closed door tops, seamless construction Hardware Use: All doors shall be considered high use and hardware specified accordingly. Light commercial or residential grade hardware is not acceptable. Hardware and Keying: Door hardware and keying shall comply with Division of Police (DP) Locksmith Section and DPSM. Coordinate with DPSM for specific security requirements and door hardware. NIH Campus Standards are as follows: Exit Devices: Von Duprin 99 Series exit devices. Mortise Locksets and Trim: All interior doors shall be equipped with mortise locksets unless life safety codes dictate otherwise. Series and Grade: Series 1000, Grade 1, to be compatible with existing lockset, as directed by locksmith. Trim: Lever handles with return to within 13 mm of the door face. Campus Standard: Schlage L9000 mortise lock with 17 lever design. Recessed Door Pulls: Not permitted. Cylinders: New Facilities: All lockset cylinders for new facilities shall be a high security type as required by the DPS Locksmith Section. Existing Facilities: For renovations, key locks into the existing building system. Type: Provide 6 pin high security cylinders keyed to campus key system in a keyway directed by DP Locksmith Section. Interchangeable Core: All cylinders are interchangeable core type. Campus Standard: Schlage Everest/Primus XP. Door Closers: LCN 4040XP or Medico door closers. Configuration: Provide door closers that do not impede the clear width or height of door opening. Key System and Keying: Key System Review: DPS Locksmith Section provides specific information on the keying requirements for all NIH projects. Final Keying Requirements: Final keying requirements shall be determined by the NIH locksmith and incorporated into the project by the AE. General Keying Requirements: Provide the following keys: 2 change keys per cylinder and 1 extra blank per lock. 500 key blanks and key bitting chart 1 Master key delivered to DP and DFM. 4

5 Card Access Readers: Provide card access readers on doors as required by the program or by NIH DPSM. Electronic Hold Open Devices: Provide electronic hold open devices on doors in high traffic areas and where corridor doors are required for fire separation but not for security or environmental segregation. Coordination is required with the means of egress plan and the DFM. Additional hardware may be required (ex. crash bar). The doors must be unlockable (ex. crash bar, motion detector) in the direction of travel. Door Plates: Provide stainless steel armor, kick, mop and stretcher plates on doors based on door location and room use. See diagram below for plate configurations. Center plates horizontally on door and have a width 2 inches less than door width. Door plates shall maintain UL rating, and must be specified in door schedule. Corridor Doors: Provide 16 inch high kick plate on corridor doors. Insert Door Plate Diagram Here Construction Cores: Provide temporary construction cores during construction. Remove construction cores when directed by Project Officer. Exterior Door Hardware: Closers: Provide closers for all exterior doors. Tamper Resistance: Hinges, hingepins and hasps shall be secured against unauthorized removal by spot welds or use of peened mounting bolts. Astragal: Provide astragal or lock guard to prevent jimmying of the latch. Egress Only Doors: Doors used exclusively for emergency egress shall not have operable hardware on the exterior of the door Glazing Exterior Door Glazing: Insulated tempered glass, clear, low emissivity coating, unless building standard requires specific tint or coating. Interior Door Non-rated Glazing: Clear tempered Laboratory Doors General The following requirements for laboratory doors are in addition to the minimum requirements indicated in Section above Minimum Requirements for Laboratory Doors, Frames, Hardware & Glazing Laboratory Doors & Frames 5

6 Exterior Doors: Exterior doors entering directly into a laboratory are prohibited unless required for egress. If required for egress, door shall be alarmed. Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) Doors: FRP doors are permitted as exterior doors serving laboratories. Glass Fiber Reinforced Composite (CFRC) Doors: CFRC doors are not permitted as exterior doors serving laboratories. Interior Doors: Type: Interior laboratory doors and frames shall be steel. Exceptions: FRP or GFRC doors may be required for specialty laboratories such as aquatics laboratories. Minimum Size: 42 wide x 84 high. Exceptions: 36 Doors: A laboratory with multiple entries, including one 42 wide entry, may have 36 wide secondary doors. Doors serving administrative offices within laboratory suites may be 36 wide. Active Passive Leaf Doors: 48 active / passive leaf doors (36 active / 12 passive) satisfy the requirement for a 42 wide door. Use of these doors shall be limited to when necessary to provide accessible entrance clearance in laboratories with tight module dimension. Construction: Interior laboratory doors may be hollow construction, except doors serving insectaries must be solid core without voids. Direction of Swing: Laboratory doors shall open in the direction of exit travel. Exception: Doors serving non-hazardous laboratory functions with an occupant load of 2 or less may swing opposite the direction of travel if approved by the DFM. Recess: Laboratory doors opening into exit or exit access corridors shall be recessed Laboratory Door Hardware Closers: Provide closers on all laboratory doors. Closer shall permit doors to open 90 degrees, minimum. Exceptions: A door serving an administrative office within a laboratory suite is not required to have a closer if not required by code. Bumper Rails: Install bumper rails on doors in high use traffic areas. Sill and Jamb Seals: Provide sill and jamb seals where required by program. Coordination: Coordinate location of door seals with Mechanical. Sill Berm and Seal: Provide slight berm and tightly fitting door sill sweep at aquatic rooms, chemical storage room and any other function with the potential for flooding or where containment of spilled chemicals is required. Flush Bolts: Provide constant latching flush bolts on inactive leaf of 48 active / passive laboratory doors. 6

7 Manual Door Release: Provide manual door release on inside of all controlled environmental rooms. Select Agent Laboratory Locks: Provide tamper resistant high security cylinders on the facility master lock for all doors serving laboratories containing select agents Laboratory Door Glazing Vision Panels: Provide vision panels for all laboratory doors except those serving laboratory functions requiring light control. Size and Location: Panels shall be minimum 100 square inches with sill AFF and head 75 to 77 AFF. Black Out Curtains: For laboratories requiring light control, provide black out curtain on interior of door vision panel. Double Leaf Doors: Locate vision panel on active door leaf. Corridor to Corridor Doors: Provide vision panels on all laboratory doors leading from a corridor to a corridor. Environmental Room Doors: Provide vision panels on all environmental room doors Animal Research Facility (ARF) Doors, Frames, Hardware & Glazing General The following requirements for ARF doors, frames and hardware are in addition to the minimum requirements indicated in Section above. Life Safety Requirements: Xxxxx Minimum Requirements for ARF Doors, Frames & Hardware Doors & Frames Exterior Doors: Direct ARF Entry Doors: Exterior doors entering directly into an ARF (within the facility barrier) are prohibited unless required for egress. If required for egress, door shall be alarmed. Exterior Door Type: Exterior doors serving the animal research facility must be FRP type. Exception: Personnel entry doors that are not used as primary material delivery doors may be aluminum storefront type. Interior Doors: Interior ARF Door Type: Doors within the animal research facility barrier must be FRP or CFRC assemblies. Interior ARF Door Frame Type: Door frames within the animal research facility barrier must be FRP, CFRC, type 304 stainless steel, or epoxy painted steel. 7

8 Epoxy Finish: If epoxy painted steel frames are used, epoxy coating must be shop applied on both exposed and concealed surfaces, and field painted (final coat) on exposed surfaces. Grout Filling: Fill FRP and CFRC frames fully with grout. Resolve issue of grout in contact with GWB. ANSI recommends isolating grout from GWB. Sealant: Apply sealant to every joint between door frames and adjacent construction. Minimum Size: 48 wide x 90 high. Exceptions: Xxxxxxxx Automatic Doors: Cage wash entry and exit doors shall be automatically operated. Type: If space permits, use sliding type rather than swing type automatic doors. Operator: Operate doors with either paddle type activator or motion detection activation, as appropriate Animal Research Facility Door Hardware Crash Rails: Provide metal crash rails on all ARF doors. Install high and low rails on doors serving Cage Wash. Jamb Guards: Provide stainless steel jamb guards on ARF door frames exposed to animal caging traffic. Door Sill Sweeps: Provide nylon bristle door sweeps at the sill of all doors in animal research facilities. Window Covers: Provide window covers over animal holding room glazing. Covers for red glazing may be omitted with approval of Project Officer. Pulls & Latches: Door pulls and latches shall be designed with profiles that will not hold water. Hinges: Continuous, 14 guage stainless steel with 6.35 mm stainless steel pin Animal Research Facility Door Glazing Xxxx: Xxxxx Specialty Doors, Frames & Hardware Automatic Doors: Consider automatic doors where serving an occupant load of 500 or greater. Type: If space permits, use sliding type rather than swing type automatic doors. Safety Devices: Include safety devices on automatic doors. Power Assisted Doors: Power assisted doors may be used instead of fully automatic doors, where appropriate. Revolving Doors: Revolving doors are permitted and encouraged as main entry doors into a secure lobby. A pop-out door feature is required wherever revolving doors are used. Within Laboratory Suites: Revolving doors are permitted within laboratory suites if required by the program or other functional purpose. Sliding Doors: Manually operated sliding doors may be used with approval of Project Officer only when serving an occupant load of 2 or less. Sliding doors must meet the following criteria: 8

9 Pocket Doors: Not permitted. Track: Fully sealed Insert Image Overhead Track: Track must be overhead type. Thresholds nor floor tracks are permitted. Fire Rated: Sliding doors may not be used where fire rating of opening is required. Main Laboratory Entry: Sliding doors may not be used for the main laboratory entry. Screen Doors: Interior screen doors within laboratories are acceptable if required by the program, typically for insectaries. Lead Lined Shielded Doors: Rooms containing radiation emitting equipment may require radiation shielding doors. Design and location of radiation shielded doors must be approved by the NIH Division of Radiation Safety. Illuminated warning signage is usually associated with these doors and should be coordinated with the Project Officer. Magnetic Resonance Imaging Doors: Rooms containing magnetic resonance imaging equipment (MRI, NMR) may require electromagnetically shielded doors. Doors serving these rooms shall swing out of the room to insure operability in the case of room overpressure from a ruptured liquid nitrogen or helium coolant line. Illuminated warning signage is usually associated with these doors and should be coordinated with the Project Officer. Overhead Doors: Type: Electrically operated for doors greater than 12 x 12, manually operated for doors 12 x 12 or less in size. Duty: Industry standard; xxxxxx grade Material: Galvanized steel, shop primed, field painted. Exterior Doors: Insulated, with weatherstripping nylon bristle sweeps at the sill and jambs. Air Curtains: Include air curtains or other devices to limit air infiltration through overhead door. Other Devices: Plastic strip doors, or electric insect light traps should be also be considered.
