Management Goals: To provide for the protection, integrated management and responsible use of a healthy, productive and undiminished forest resource base for the social, recreational, environmental and economic benefit of the State of Michigan. Soil and Topography: This compartment is composed primarily of excessively drained sandy soils situated on generally flat topography. The only notable exceptions are a few isolated pockets of seasonally wet soils found adjacent to the Sturgeon River and along the western edge of section near Berry Creek. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: While there are no private in holdings, this compartment does share common boundaries with many developed residential properties. Through tax reversion, the State has acquired ownership to a number of lots within the Sturgeon River Estates subdivision which is located in sections and 2 on the east side of the Sturgeon River. During the recently completed Phase II land consolidation review process, it was determined that we would retain ownership of those lots with river frontage. These lots were not included within the OI database system, however, due to their small size. Unique, Natural Features: None were identified. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: None were identified. Special Management Designations or Considerations: An automated weather data collection station is located in section 2 and is designated as stand #27.

2 Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: This compartment contains a portion of the Sturgeon River, a designated trout stream and tributary to Burt Lake, within the Cheboygan River watershed. A 200-foot noclearcut buffer should be maintained along the Sturgeon River in this compartment. Berry Creek touches the western boundary of the compartment at the southwest corner of section. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: This compartment lies southwest of Indian River and consists mainly of upland habitat. Oak is a very important component of this area for wildlife and scattered large crowned oak will be left in most treatments for hard mast production. Stand 29 is going to be burned to maintain a natural oak/jack pine barrens community. This area receives heavy hunting pressure for ruffed grouse, American woodcock, white-tailed deer, bear, and wild turkey. Stands 47, 59, 66, 69, and 75 will be treated to maintain early successional habitat. Stand 46 and 73 will be cut in 0 years to maintain age-class diversity and encourage oak regeneration. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Surface sediments consist of icecontact sand and gravel, lacustrine (lake) sand & gravel and some dune sand. The glacial drift thickness varies between 0 and 200 feet. The Devonian Traverse Group subcrops below the glacial drift. The Traverse is quarried for limestone and cement products elsewhere in the State. Gravel pits are located just to the south and there is good potential. The nearest oil and gas production, the Antrim Shale gas play, is located several miles to the south. The Antrim Shale is thin to missing. The west part of this Compartment was leased in November There is no known oil and gas potential in the area. Vehicle Access: The vast majority of this compartment has very good existing vehicle access. An isolated block of State-owned land, however, is located in the northeast portion of section. This portion of the compartment is only accessible via the North Central State Trail corridor. Survey Needs: None required at this time. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: The North Central State Trail passes through this compartment roughly paralleling the east side of the Sturgeon River. This is a popular improved surface recreational trail used by hikers, snowmobiles and bikes. A recreational trail parking lot is located in section 2 just west of Old-27 identified as stand # 22. Snowmobile trail #767, a 50 ATV trail and an ORV route all originate from this trailhead parking lot. In addition, the MCCCT trail passes through the northern portions of both section and section 2. Fire Protection: This is an extremely xeric compartment that poses definite wildfire threats especially due to the close proximity of numerous permanent private residences. THIS STAND CERTAINLY COULD BE CUT AND WILDLIFE STAFF WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT TREATED THIS ENTRY YEAR. THE ENTIRE SIDE SLOPE SHOULD BE LEFT UNCUT FOR RETENTION AND VISUAL MANAGEMENT PURPOSES. THIS RETENTION AREA SHOULD EXTEND OUTWARD FROM BOTH THE BASE AND TOP OF THE SLOPE FOR APPROXIMATELY ONE CHAIN oak low quality final harvest FDF Status THIS IS VERY LOW QUALITY OAK WITH ASPEN AND PINE MIXED THROUGHOUT. THIS STAND TO THE NORTH OF CLUB ROAD WILL BE HARVESTED THIS ENTRY YEAR AND ALLOWED TO REGENERATE NATURALLY. 5 J jack pine mature final harvest planting STAND HAS SOME NICE TALL STEMS IN IT. IT IS DEFINITELY MATURE AND READY TO BE HARVESTED. THIS SHOULD BE COMBINED WITH THE HARVEST OF STAND #4 ON THE NORTH SIDE OF CLUB ROAD. WILDLIFE WOULD LIKE - 3 OAK PER ACRE LEFT AS RESIDUAL. 23 O oak immature 0 opening maintenance THIS IS THE SITE OF OUR AUTOMATED FIRE WEATHER STATION. AN FTP HAS BEEN APPROVED TO MAINTAIN THE OPEN CHARACTER OF THIS STAND THROUGH THE USE OF PERIODIC PRESCRIBED BURNS. IT HAS BEEN BURNED TWICE ALREADY BUT THE OAK JUST KEEPS COMING BACK jack pine low quality final harvest planting A LOW QUALITY STAND OF PIN OAK AND WHITE OAK. JACK PINE IS MIXED THROUGHOUT AND IS PRETTY DECENT QUALITY SO I BELIEVE THAT THIS SITE IS MUCH BETTER SUITED TO JACK PINE. WILDLIFE WOULD LIKE - 3 OAK PER ACRE LEFT AS RESIDUAL. THE PORTION OF THIS STAND ALONG THE CEMETARY AND THE PRIVATE RESIDENCES WAS BROKEN OFF TO FORM STAND #92 WHICH WILL NOT BE SCHEDULED FOR TREATMENT. 29 O oak sparse final harvest natural regeneration THIS IS EXTREMELY SPARSE AND LOW QUALITY. MOST OF THE JACK PINE WAS REMOVED FROM THE STAND IN THE EARLY 980'S. WILDLIFE DIVISION WOULD LIKE TO HARVEST AND THEN BURN THIS STAND IN AN EFFORT TO STIMULATE NATURAL FIRE ORIGIN REGENERATION. THEY WOULD ALSO LIKE - 3 OAK PER ACRE LEFT AS RESIDUAL ALONG WITH SCATTERED JACK PINE white pine mature seed tree THERE ARE A LOT OF SPECIES REPRESENTED IN THIS STAND. ASPEN IS WELL DISTRIBUTED BUT IF THIS WERE TO BE FINAL HARVESTED I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THE ASPEN REGENERATION WOULD BE VERY AGGRESIVE. INSTEAD I BELIEVE THAT THE REGEN WOULD BE SPARSE, SIMILAR TO STANDS #39 AND #60. MY RECOMMENDATION WOULD BE TO REMOVE EVERYTHING EXCEPT FOR THE WHITE PINE AND RED PINE COMPONENT. THIS WOULD HOPEFULLY RESULT IN A POST TREATMENT HARVEST AREA SIMILAR TO STAND #54 ADJACENT TO THE SOUTH. WILDLIFE WOULD ALSO LIKE - 3 OAK PER ACRE LEFT AS RESIDUAL. WHEN POSSIBLE THESE RESIDUAL OAK SHOULD BE THE LARGER DIAMETER, WOLFY TREES white pine mature seed tree THIS STAND OCCUPIES THE SIDE SLOPES OF A SLIGHT BOWL SHAPED DEPRESSION. THE JACK PINE SEEMS TO HAVE FAIRLY DECENT FORM. DUE TO THE IRREGULAR SHAPE OF THE STAND AND RELATIVELY SMALL ACREAGE I WOULD SUGGEST HARVESTING THIS ALONG WITH THE ADJACENT STAND #47 AND MANAGING IT WITH A SIMILAR WHITE PINE OBJECTIVE. THIS WOULD INVOLVE LEAVING ANY OF THE SCATTERED RED AND WHITE PINE THAT ARE IN THE STAND aspen (upland) mature final harvest THIS STAND WAS INTER-PLANTED WITH RED PINE IN 960. MOST OF THE RED PINE IS BEING SUPPRESSED BY THE OVERTOPPING ASPEN. WILDLIFE WOULD LIKE THIS STAND TREATED THIS ENTRY YEAR. THEY WOULD ALSO LIKE -3 OAK PER ACRE LEFT AS RESIDUAL aspen (upland) mature final harvest RED PINE WAS INTER-PLANTED WITHIN THIS STAND BACK IN 960. MANAGE THIS STAND ALONG WITH STAND #59 TO THE NORTH white pine mature seed tree THIS IS A MATURE STAND WITH A LOT OF SPECIES DIVERSITY. THE JACK PINE COMPONENT DISTINGUISHES THIS STAND FROM STAND #73 TO THE SOUTH. I WOULD SUGGEST REMOVING EVERYTHING EXCEPT THE RED PINE AND WHITE PINE WHILE ALSO PROTECTING THE WHITE PINE UNDERSTORY. THIS WOULD RESULT IN A POST- TREATMENT AREA SIMILAR TO STAND #68 ADJACENT TO THE EAST. IN ORDER TO DO THIS A SHORTWOOD ONLY OPERATION WOULD BE REQUIRED. Page of 2 6/4/2009

Conservation Area Type Description ERA = Ecological Reference Area HCVA = High Conservation Value Area SCA = Special Conservation Area SCA SCA Cold Water Stream Potential Old Growth Areas A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 20. This category contains stands were identified for a broad range of reasons and were coded in the OI database as stand condition 8 as potential old growth (POG). Approximately 30,000 acres have been identified through the Operations Inventory (OI)/Compartment Review process. For stands in Year of Entry 2008 and forward, potential old growth is managed for the identified objective until it is: ) vetted through the Biodiversity Conservation Planning Process (BCPP) and given a specific designation and objective (as an ERA, HCVA, or other type of SCA) and is released from the potential old growth designation; or 2) it is released from the potential old growth designation via the Compartment Review process.
