5 1.0 INTRODUCTION The applicants are proposing a multi-unit residential building with accompanying underground parking. The site is located east of Ottawa University along Nelson Street between Osgoode Street and Somerset Street. Refer to Figure 1 Site Extents. Figure 1- Site Extents The following has been prepared to examine the impact of the proposed development on the existing natural features on the proposed site and surrounding lots. The report provides: an inventory and assessment of the existing vegetation; description of the impact of the proposed development on the existing natural features; identification of trees to be retained; and recommendations to promote tree conservation. The report was prepared based on field work conducted in March Novatech Page 1

6 2.0 METHODOLOGY An inventory and analysis of the existing site and natural features was conducted followed by an onsite assessment of each tree by Michael Trouten (Landscape Technician, Forestry Technician). The location of existing trees was confirmed and an identification of the tree species, size, and condition was conducted. Trees were assessed according to their location and function in the overall landscape according to the site plan prepared by Architect. An analysis of the impact of the proposed development on the health of the trees was then made based on a consideration of the location of the proposed built elements as noted in the plans provided. The assessment of the impact of the proposed development on the health of the existing trees was based on the following criteria: The location of the trees with relation to the proposed built elements. The impact of proposed grade changes on the health of the trees. The degree of disruption to the root system by the proposed development. Recommendations were then derived outlining how the conservation of the trees could be maximized during design and construction. 3.0 GENERAL CONDITIONS 3.1 Vegetation The site is comprised of three residential units, one single and one duplex flanking a gravel parking area. Vegetation is mostly limited to the rear yard and street frontage with a few standouts along the gravel parking area. The rear yard is dominated by Manitoba Maples (Acer negundo). There is a single European Linden (Tilia cordata) in good condition and form, as well as a few Ulmus sp. (White Elm). There is a patch of juvenile trees which have colonized the area directly adjacent to the north property line near the Linden. They are growing through and directly adjacent to the fence that divides the properties. They are not expected to develop into valuable assets to either site in the future. There are a pair of Red Maples (Acer rubrum) in the front yard and an unmanaged Cedar hedge (Thuja occidentalis). 3.2 Surface Water No surface water features are located on site. 3.3 Steep Slopes Most of the site is regular or only slightly sloped. No steep slopes exist fully on-site. The eastern portion of the site drops off at or outside of the property line. A dry-laid rock wall exists within the neighbouring yard to reinforce the slope. Existing vegetation has reduced the effectiveness of this wall and will continue to compromise slope integrity if left unmanaged. Novatech Page 2

Trees were found to be in good, fair, poor, and very poor condition based on the overall branching structure, limiting factors for future growth and presence of disease or ailment. Novatech Page 3

8 The site is dominated by Manitoba Maple in varying stages of poor condition. Most display poor form that is typical to the species, and injuries that speak to the potential of or are displaying signs of internal rot. All Elm on site are stressed from or have already succumbed to Dutch Elm Disease. The larger of the two Red Maples found in the front yard is located directly beneath overhead electrical lines and has already suffered some wounds due to regular pruning of upper middle canopy. Reparative tissue was found to be growing over bark near the base of the tree, and black bark was found originating from a significant lower limb. Both are indicative of internal injuries or rot and represent an existing stress on the tree. The smaller Red Maple in the front yard was found to be issuing sap from a seam created by a v- crotch and similarly represents an existing stress on the tree. Novatech Page 4

9 6.0 RECOMMENDATIONS To ensure that trees recommended for preservation are fully protected, stringent tree preservation techniques should be implemented during construction. In particular, the following mitigating measures designed to protect trees during construction should be implemented: Under the guidance of a landscape architect, erect a fence at the critical root zone (CRZ) of trees where the CRZ is established as being 10 centimetres from the trunk of a tree for every centimetre of trunk diameter at breast height. The CRZ is calculated as DBH x 10cm. Refer to the Tree Protection Fence detail (Appendix A). See plan for fence location. When trees to be removed overlap with the CRZ of trees to be preserved: cut roots at the edge of the CRZ and grind down stumps after tree removals, do not pull out stumps. Ensure there is not root pulling or disturbance of the ground within the CRZ. If roots must be cut, roots 20mm or larger should be cut at right angles with clean, sharp horticultural tools without tearing, crushing, or pulling. Refer to City of Ottawa Specification S.P. F-8011 Tree Protection, Excavation of Root Zone. Hand work only where required within the CRZ; absolutely no machinery permitted. Do not place any material or equipment within the CRZ of any tree. Do not attach any signs, notices or posters to any tree. Do not disturb, raise or lower the existing grade within the CRZ without approval. Only tunnel or bore when digging within the CRZ of a tree. Do not damage the root system, trunk, or branches or any tree. Ensure that exhaust fumes from all equipment are directed away from any tree canopy. NOVATECH Prepared by: Reviewed by: Michael J.
