1 E S A V O U R S H A D E Understanding & Managing Emerald Ash Borer Welcome to the Save Our Shade Emerald Ash Borer Management Program! As a property owner with an ash tree, you are probably aware the emerald ash borer (EAB) invasion can wipe out an entire community s ash population in only 10 years. Some cities have already lost all their trees, while others, such as yours are in the early stages of infestation. Our team of certified consulting arborists and scientists have been developing nationally recognized plans for tree health management for almost 30 years, starting with Dutch elm disease in the 1970s. We have developed proven methods for saving ash trees from the emerald ash borer, and want to share these with you. Whether you treat or remove your tree, we want you to have all the facts to make educated decisions. The enclosed emerald ash borer management guide provides current information to assist do-it-yourselfers in developing an EAB management strategy. It can be used by communities that are currently infested with EAB, and those not yet infested. If you have ash trees in your community, it is only a matter of time before you need an ash tree management plan. Large or small, any community in North America possessing an inventory of ash trees will benefit from having taken the time to get educated about EAB management options. Thank you for taking the time to plan for and care for your trees! Please call us at or us at info@thetreegeek.com with any questions. 2 E S A V O U R S H A D E Neighborhood Protection Against Emerald Ash Borer How To Get Started Taking Action Against Emerald Ash Borer Neighborhood Coalitions Unite! What you can do now: Send out letters to your neighbors. Encourage everyone to identify ash trees in your parks, schools, church properties, and neighborhoods. Determine your tree s value if you have an ash tree. Decide to treat or remove. If you decide you d like to preserve your tree, see our Managing Emerald Ash Borer Fact Sheet or visit for guidelines. Determine if your neighborhood is within a 15 mile radius of an infestation. Call us if you need help! FUTURE EAB IMPACT! Fort Wayne (Top) before and (Below) after emerald ash borer Contact your city forester for information. Encourage your city to protect trees to to prevent your property and family from potential damage or injury that may occur once the dying ash trees brittle limbs begin to fall. Research funding or grants. Funding is available in certain locations; secure a grant from the city to do your own treatments. Create a service project for your sports or scouts league! Save money by getting a group of volunteers to protect several trees at one time. Use Your Voice! Spread awareness of this impending threat to all ash trees. Send letters to local papers, news stations, master gardeners, gardening or environmental blogs. Send letters home with church community members or with students at school. Befo Attend a webinar! We have EAB homeowner webinars starting November 2012! Register at: Remember, all untreated ash trees will die within the next 10 years. Once a community of ash trees is infested, tree death increases rapidly in what is termed the Ash Tree Death Curve. This death curve indicates exponential tree death from EAB infestation, which causes a costlier, more dangerous natural disaster that is in turn more difficult for cities to manage. Please call us at or us at info@thetreegeek.com with any questions. TheTreeGeek.com Staff Arborists Battling the EAB Death Curve In 2011 Ft. Without aggressive 14,900 trees to be protected in ,400 trees to be removed in 2012 Community Partnership Naperville s strategy involves the use of several treatment methods depending on the size of the tree. Soil drench will be used on trees less than 20 inches in diameter. Trunk injection will be used on trees above 20 inches in diameter. The second component of Naperville s strategy is removal and replacement of ash trees that are highly infested. The removal cost, including the removal, stump-grinding, and restoration work, averages $625 per tree. Replacement tree planting costs an average of $250 per tree. It is estimated that just as many ash trees exist on private property as city land. To assist property owners, Naperville is partnering with local stakeholder groups to offer EAB management education. The city will maintain a list of qualified contractors for resident use in dealing with dead tree removal. Naperville s strategy for treatment and removal will allow for EAB mitigation by saving ash trees and managing the health of city ash trees. since been found in all subdivisions throughout the city. Initially, the Department of Public Works (DPW) developed a containment strategy which consisted of removing infested ash trees and treating all parkway ash trees within a halfmile radius of the infestation. With the spread of EAB, DPW has developed a protection strategy to include the treatment of all healthy parkway trees throughout the city. Need help? Above: The emerald ash borer injures and kills the tree by consuming the trees vascular tissue. Below, top: D-shaped exit hole caused by emerald ash borer emerging from an ash. Below, bottom: Neighborhood decimated by emerald ash borer in Ohio. What is the Emerald Ash Borer? Emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis, is an invasive wood boring beetle from Asia that is predicted to infest all unprotected ash trees in the United States and Canada over the next 20 years. It spreads very quickly and has already killed 10 s of millions of ash trees since it was discovered in EAB has been found throughout the upper Midwest as far east as Maryland and New York and as far west as Minnesota and Iowa. Biology of the Beetle and Ash Tree EAB lays its eggs on the bark of an ash tree and the larvae tunnel through the bark and begin consuming the sapwood of the tree. This feeding disrupts water flow to the canopy, dehydrating and killing that portion of the tree. Eventually, the whole tree will die. Signs and Symptoms of Emerald Ash Borer? Early infestations of emerald ash borer are nearly impossible to detect ; the tree does not show outward symptoms; however, as the infestation grows, the tree will decline and then die. What you will see as the infestation progresses: Early fall coloration. Dieback of branches with sparse foliage. New branches sprouting from the lower trunk. Woodpeckers feeding on infested trees. D-shaped exit holes. Decline in groups of ash all at the same time. Emerald Ash Borer Protection is Easy! Order by Phone: or Buy Online at: Have Questions? Talk with a Staff Arborist Today!
6 Emerald Ash Borer Treatment Strategies Your treatment for emerald ash borer depends on whether your tree is showing symptoms or is still healthy. Regardless of the treatment strategy, watering after treatment is important. Photo, above: Xytect is applied as a soil drench around the base of your tree. DIY Shopping List Order online at Application Type Soil drench DIY Product/Equipment Needed o Transtect or Xytect o Measuring or diameter tape o Gloves o Soil Drench: Bucket or watering can Treatment Strategy for Healthy Trees If your tree is important and valuable, and does not have a visible infestation, protecting from emerald ash borer is both affordable and effective. Xytect is a professional strength insecticide that can be mixed with water and poured at the base of the tree. Annual treatments are required to maintain protection. This product can be applied from March through June or September through November, but the optimal treatment time is March through May. Start treatment when you are in a quarantined county and before symptoms appear. Treatment Strategy for Infested Trees If your tree is showing symptoms of infestation, but there is less than 30% dieback, it is still possible to save your tree; however, it will be more expensive and there is a risk that treatment may not work. Two products are recommended for treating infested trees. If your tree is under 20 inches DBH, use Transtect. Transtect is a fast moving insecticide that is applied to the soil at the base of the tree. To maintain protection, apply annual treatments of Xytect in subsequent years. Choosing the Right Emerald Ash Borer Treatment Plan: Xytect Xytect provides one year control of EAB on small and larger trees. Xytect is best used as a preventative but can be used in therapeutic situations. Xytect: 1 year protection Timing: March-May; Fall vs Transtect Transtect provides control of EAB for one growing season. Transtect is best used as a preventative for those last minute treatments but can be used in therapeutic situations. Transtect: 4-6 month control Timing: June-August SAVE!
