Private funding or municipal budget Strings attached?- Treatment only funding Duration of Funding Utilize multiple avenuescollege marketing class, neighborhood associations, not for profits 16 8
In-House/Contractor Amount of Funding Adequate funding was available Staffing level Did not have sufficient staff Forestry Division has 4 full time and 4 seasonal employees. Maintain current pruning cycle and removals Ice Storm!- Major contributing factor 17 Ice Storm
Politics/Support Know your council Prove the trees are assets. Green benefits Be prepared know the facts. Environmental issues 19 Use the local media Neighborhood or quad meetings Inform the public(the 5 w s). Public Awareness Print flyers or door knockers 20 10
Two main sites for disposal of chips There was one main site for wood disposal Quarantine areas Chipper rodeo -certified chippers Debris Disposal 21 Treatment Choice Research the options!!! Talk to people with EAB experience Community and infrastructure needs Treatment vs. Cut and Replace? 22 11
Possible Solutions Don t do anything Ash trees will die. We remove them at that time. Remove all ash trees and replace with other species (diverse culture) Treat all ash trees Or a COMBINATION OF ALL OF THE ABOVE 23 Option 1 - Don t do Anything Initially, it s the least costly proposal. Increase liability on the Department Not proactive Later costs are going to increase with mortality, inflation and having to deal with larger trees to remove Projected costs of $5,100,000 over 15 years (using 2008 $) 24 12
Option 1 - Graph Proposed Removal Costs $700,000 $600,000 $500,000 $400,000 $300,000 $200,000 $100,000 $ Year 25 Option 2 Remove and Replace Initially, it s the most costly proposal Removals of various size trees and planting with smaller 2 diameter trees that are 8 10 feet tall Peace of mind that EAB will not affect future trees Projected costs of $8,600,000 over 15 years (using 2008 $) 26 13
Option 2 - Graph Removal and Replacement Costs $1,000,000 $900,000 $800,000 $700,000 $600,000 $500,000 $400,000 $300,000 $200,000 $100,000 $ Year 27 Option 3 Treatment Initially, it s the least costly proposal Treating ash trees from 4 diameter on up Treatment would be every year Projected costs of $3,300,000 over 15 years (using 2008 $) 28 14
Option 3 - Graph $500,000 $450,000 $400,000 $350,000 $300,000 $250,000 $200,000 $150,000 $100,000 $50,000 $ Year 29 Option 4 Combination Plan Evaluate all of the ash trees Determine if specimen is worth saving If not, remove it when it dies Remove and replace those trees that are small with other species Maintaining the city tree canopy Treating those larger ash trees that are in good health and those in neighborhoods of monoculture Projected costs of $3,000,000 over 15 years (using 2008 $) 30 15
Specifications Standard boiler plate Be specific. -products, flow meter, -certain product or equivalent! Environmental laws and pesticide laws A certified Arborist and chemical applicator license required. Hours of operation Price per DBH inch-flexibility EAB Plan At first the plan was to Cut and replace the trees as they died. We received funding late in Treatment only funding. Treated 11,704 Ash trees out of 12,295. Not practical! 32 16
