3 Governments of Greece The four options given to you on how best to win the game relate to the four types of government that occurred in Ancient Greece and still have an effect on the world today. We will demonstrate each type of government and discuss which strategy you chose.

4 Grooving to Government We are going to listen to some of your favorite songs, but we will need to decide these questions: Which songs should we listen to? How loudly should the music be played? We will experience four different ways of making these decisions, each based on a form of government from ancient Greece. After you have experienced each form of government, you will connect your experience with actual history.

12 Monarchy 2000 B.C.E. to 800 B.C.E The earliest form of government in ancient Greece was monarchy. In a monarchy, the power to make political decisions is in the hands of one person, most likely a king.

13 Monarchy making laws, acting as judge, conducting religious ceremonies, and leading the army. I punished people who disobeyed the law or didn t pay their taxes. I had a council of aristocrats to advise me. I depended heavily on the aristocrats to help me during wartime. They grew stronger as a group, demanded more of my power, and finally overthrew me.

20 Oligarchy 800 B.C.E. to 650 B.C.E Oligarchy developed as an alternative to monarchy. In an oligarchy, the power to make political decisions is in the hand of a few people usually called oligarchs.

21 Oligarchy by passing laws that protected and increased our own wealth. We lived comfortable lives, while the poor worked all day in the fields. we ignored the needs of the majority of the people. We passed unpopular laws and used the army to enforce them. The rich got richer and the poor got poorer. Eventually, the poor turned to leaders in the army. These new leaders overthrew us.

27 Tyranny Most Greek tyrants were military leaders who promised improvements and who rose to power with the support of their soldiers and some of the people. Tyrants need to please their supporters to stay in power. Tyrant: Ask the students who supported you for advice on what song to play next and at what volume. Then choose a song and play it.

30 Tyranny 650 B.C.E. to 500 B.C.E Discontent with the oligarchies led to the rise of new leaders called tyrants. Under a tyranny, the power to make political decisions is in the hands of one person, usually called a tyrant.

31 Tyranny force, though I was not always unpopular. I promised people more rights and made changes to help the poor. I sometimes ruled harshly and ignored the needs of the people. In Athens, the people forced me out of power.

37 Democracy 500 B.C.E. to 400 B.C.E Around 500 B.C.E, after the overthrow of a harsh tyrant, the citizens of Athens decided that they would rule themselves. Under a democracy, the power to make political decisions is in the hands of all people, called citizens.

38 Democracy having an assembly. Any free man could speak at an assembly and vote on a new law or a proposal to go to war. Free men also ran the city s day-to-day business. powerful speakers sometimes persuaded ordinary citizens to vote unwisely. Often, an assembly reversed important decisions after just a few weeks. Most city-states returned to earlier forms of government, such as tyrannies (dictatorships) and oligarchies.
