Water-quality monitoring program 2014 the present Motivations include: Improve understanding of a complex system Enhance trout growth, habitat, and survival Enhance the fishing experience Improve resource stewardship and management

, Water Samples (weekly) Turbidity, Suspended Sediment, Phosphorus, Nitrogen Sonde Network (continuous data) Main stem river 1. Above IP Reservoir 2. Below IP Dam East 3. Below IP Dam West 4. Pinehaven/Riverside area 5. Above Ashton Reservoir 6. Below Ashton Reservoir 7. St. Anthony 8. Above NF Teton River Major Tributaries 9. Buffalo River 10. Warm River 11. Fall River

Water Quality Update Turbidity was low Dissolved oxygen was good Angling community concerned with temperatures through the Ranch during July August last year

Water temperature was warm through the Ranch, but was within tolerable range for Rainbow and Brown Trout.

Warmest water temps in July 2017 were not significantly warmer than in July 2016 when twice as much water was being discharged from IP reservoir.

X X New Harriman Ranch sonde! Copy write 2012 by John McDaniel X We ll collect temperature from 3 4 locations inside the Ranch (small Hobo loggers, red X ) We ll install a sonde at the cattle bridge (yellow X ) to collect temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, etc. X

Water temps for 2018: so far, so good... IP East Temp (F) Pinehaven Temp (F) St Anthony Temp (F)

High flows and turbidity Memorial Day weekend 2018

The water released from those dams remains at a relatively constant temperature (usually in the 40s or 50s) throughout the whole year. Kirk Deeter, Field and Stream The greatest advantage to a tailwater fishery is this controlled source of water. Constant flows with ideal water temperatures Pat Dorsey, Fly Fisherman Since a bottom release dam releases the water from the bottom of a lake, temperatures will remain consistent - Adam Franceschini, sageflyfish.com

What is the reason for interannual tailwater temperature variation?

What is the reason for interannual tailwater temperature variation?: Reservoir Draft

Mechanism Before Draft: Spring Inflow Epilimnion Reservoir surface Hypolimnion Dam Tailwater (outflow)

Mechanism After Draft: Summer/Fall Inflow Epilimnion Reservoir surface Hypolimnion Dam Tailwater (outflow)

Is this good or bad? Diversity in water temperature means more insect, habitat diversity Water temperatures can be determined by regional instead of local climate Controllable source of temperature variation

Takeaways Island Park Reservoir draft controls average summertime water temperature Keep the reservoir as full as possible, as long as possible More study in the future Come see the full presentation June 28!

Automated Remote Data Transmission A new frontier for the Water Quality Monitoring Program with many benefits...

Automated Remote Data Transmission IP East is currently transmitting real-time data! This summer we ll equip Pinehaven and St Anthony sondes to automatically transmit

Preliminary Analysis of Nutrient Budgets Nutrient limitation Nutrient ratios are important Productivity in fresh water systems tends to be limited by low levels of Phosphorus (P-limitation) Limitation can be identified by ratio of Total Nitrogen to Total Phosphorus (TN: TP) Present in the water column Present in biological matter

Summary of N:P ratios across watershed P limited Inconclusive N limited FR IP BU PH Flat Rock is phosphorus-limited (P-limited) HF below Island Park Reservoir is not

Productivity Henry s Fork above IP reservoir, historical productivity schematic Pre Settlement and usage began to increase Island Park Conversion from Dam septic tanks to sewer Golden Age of upper river fishery Present... Where do we want to go from here?
