3 hrs THEME II: ADDRESSING THE BASICS - FOOD & WATER Chemistry s role in combating micronutrient (vitamin & minerals) malnutrition, in particular, can never be overstated in a populous country like India. World Bank estimates that India is highest ranking countries in the world for the number of children suffering malnutrition. The financial impact in India due to the direct and indirect losses associated with malnutrition is estimated US $ 12 Million in GDP. Long before the discovery of vitamins, people established a link between what they were eating and their health. Our ancestors may not have known specifically what it was about food that made them feel better, but through trial and error, discoveries were made. Ultimately it was the chemists who isolated the various vitamins, deduced their chemical structure, and developed methods for synthesis of vitamins. Our understanding of the vitamins continues to evolve from the initial period of discovery. If it were not the Chemistry to industrially produce the vitamins & minerals, the progress would not have been made to combat the malnutrition. It is chemistry that makes water fit to drink or for use in industrial processes. 4 hrs THEME III: ROLE OF CHEMISTRY IN PREVENTING CORROSION Impact of corrosion on nation's exchequer is more than USD 40 billion a year about 4 % of GDP. Corrosion is one of the worst enemies of an industry, it often develops for many years and remains undetected, when observed it is too late to eliminate it and mend the damage caused by it. It can cause serious failures of components, large economic loss, environmental pollution, and expensive overdesign, jeopardizes safety or risk of personnel injuries and inhibits technological progress. Corrosion occurs while handling, storage and processing of fluids. The most important measures or types to prevent or to reduce the extent of corrosion failures include early detection through monitoring, proper design and diagnosis, using corrosion resistance materials and effective prevention measures. The safe and costefficient production of inorganic & organic chemicals, pharmaceutical compounds, fertilizers, paper, plastics, petrochemicals, and a host of other goods, is highly dependent on the use of highly corrosion resistance materials. Significant savings in cost and increase in life of the equipment can be achieved with right selection of material and coatings & linings and its proper maintenance. The session would focus on addressing the challenges faced for making new buildings/plants corrosion free and maintaining old ones by restoration by coating or lining older equipments & industrial plants.
