Småland the development of a fossil-fuel independent region Jyväskylä Ulf Hansson
Today s menu The Energy Agency for Southeast Sweden The region of Småland (Kronoberg) The development of district heating using biofuel New projects SIMWOOD (increased mobilisation of bioenergy from forests) Small scale CHP (demonstration project) Discussion
The Energy Agency For Southeast Sweden (ESS) ESS started in 1999 Owned by municipalities, regional councils and county councils in Blekinge, Kalmar & Kronoberg 20 employees, head office in Växjö, regional offices in Kalmar, Karlskrona & Oskarshamn Experienced project partner Striving for a sustainable energy region by carrying out projects and activities within - Energy efficiency - Renewable energy - Mobility - Energy in society Creating and sustaining networks Kronoberg Blekinge Kalmar
Triple Helix approach Public sector Private sector Academia Linnaeus University Blekinge Institute of Technology ESS acts as a catalyst in this process A unique region, >60 % RES
Networks BiG- the bioenergy group in Vaxjo Ltd Energy efficiency in buildings in southeast, Goda Hus Biogas southeast Energy advisors in southeast Sustainable municipalities in southeast
Nearby district heating Kronoberg Power ~130 MW Energy 275 GWh 6
ENERGY SUPPLIED TO DISTRICT HEATING, (TWh) Waste heat Heat pumps Electric boilers Biofuels, waste, peat Energy coal including coke oven and blast furnace gas Natural gas including LPG Oil During the previous 30 years, biomass has taken over as fuel in Swedish district heating. The fossil fuels dominated in the 1980 s, but today bioenergy (wood fuels, peat and waste) accounts for 75 percent of the used fuels. Source: Swedish Energy Agency and Statistic Sweden.
DECOUPLING Bioenergy GDP Growth Climate gas emisions The emissions of greenhouse gases in Sweden have decreased since 1990, despite a growing economy. A major reason for this development is the steady growth of bioenergy use. The diagram shows changes from 1990 (1990=100)

POTENTIALS FOR BIOMASS (TWh) Use 2009 Potential Peat Waste Agriculture Black liquor Wood fuels Svebio has estimated potentials for supply of bioenergy available in 2020, here compared to the utilisation in The largest remaining potentials are in agriculture and forestry.
What to think of for an energy community and cooperation? District heating is a good base for long term investments Technical and investment support from energy agencies and EU Use biomass as main input of energy Creates local jobs and stable economy in the long run
What to be done to develop strategies in the energy sector? Cooperation between public, private and university sector Information and involvement of the whole society Make it easy and don t wait for the extreme solutions Say, yes we can!
Small scale Combined Heat and Power based on biomass in the region of Southeast Sweden within Life+
About Life+ Project acronym: Small scale CHP LIFE+ Start date: 01/07/2014 End date: 31/12/2018 LIFE EU s funding instrument for the environment The EU commission co-finances projects in member states. New in Life: integrated projects The jointly founded integrated projects operate on a large territorial scale. They aim to implement environmental and climate policy.
Project objectives Demonstrate 3 small-scale Combined Heat and Power (CHP) technologies in 3 existing plants for biomass-based district heating and industrial sector with heat or steam. Increase the use of small-scale CHP based on biomass by demonstration of the technology Establish a platform for small-scale CHP showcases in plants 1 10 MW heat and MW electricity in the region, nationally and on European level. Decrease emissions of CO2 and contribute to the EU targets 20/20/20 and beyond, national targets to be fossil fuel free in 2050 and regional to reach this 2030 Increase renewable electricity (RESe) by increasing local bio-based small-scale electricity production.
Expected results Demonstration how CHP can be installed and driven in small-scale plants based on biomass in a region. 3 small-scale Combined Heat and Power plants with different technologies and sizes to support a broad introduction of biomass CHP technology. Increased knowledge about environmental performance og biofuel based CHP technology. Knowledge spreading in our region, nationally and on EU level. 3 technologies : WET steam turbine, ORC technology, gasification with gas motor. Electricity production around 7 GWh/year CO2 reduction 7000 tonnes (1 tonne/mwh)
