Underpinning interoperability in Geosciences and Environmental Research Christoph Waldmann Center of Marine Environmental Sciences, MARUM Bremen, Germany
The Challenge In a technical sense easy access through distributed compucng infrastructures is given However, EffecCvity for users in regard to the encre process of DISCOVERY, ACCESS and USE of data has to be enhanced
Key reason for the issue The Challenge Large amount and variety of data Conclusion Architectures have to be Interoperable in regard to SemanCcs Structure Syntax and System aspects Scalable, Extensible, AdapAble SemanCcs Structure Syntax System Consumers Facilitators Providers Terminology Metadata Data Dimension of informacon mediacon
The Challenge Heterogenity is mainly due to technological differences (hardware, operacng systems) System heterogeniaes Data representacon formats syntacac heterogenity Differences in data modelling constructs lead to structural heterogenity Vocabulary semanac interoperability
The Challenge Focus of interoperability is shioing from heterogenity in system, syntax and structure to semanacs Ubiquitous use of data leads to new requirements as for instance the use of data in other contexts (semancc interoperability)
Issues of Ubiquitous Use of Data BeQer informacon resource discovery has to be developed AbstracCon of representaconal details is necessary RepresentaCon of domain knowledge Need for EXPERT Knowledge on different levels
The Brokering Approach Geographic and environmental informacon systems are calling for integracon of metadata and vocabularies InformaCon brokering is providing arbitracon between user and provider

FP7-INFRASTRUCTURES DuraCon: 09/ /2015 COOPEUS Background Project full Ctle: "Strengthening the cooperacon between the US and the EU in the field of environmental research infrastructures" SCOPE: Expand the InternaAonal cooperaaon with the USA on common data policies and standards relevant to global research infrastructures in the environment field
COOPEUS Goals: COOPEUS aims to catalyze internaconal collaboracon among environmental research infrastructures by: By easing data accessibility through harmonizacon of data policies By promocng interoperability of Research Infrastructures on all levels (System, syntacac, structural and semaac interoperability) By improving data and informacon quality by defining the minimum requirements for QC/QA
COOPEUS framework: Thematic WPs { WP2: Atm. radar/eiscat3d, WP3: Carbon obs./icos WP4: Ocean observatories/ EMSO - OOI WP5: Earth dynamics/ EPOS WP6: Biodiversity/ LifeWatch, Cross-cutting WPs { WP7: Common data policies and standards,services, WP8Common RI Framework, policies (pracaces, principles), guidelines,
COOPEUS- the framework Overall Structure - Workflow IdenCfy Need and RaConale Testbeds Establish implementacon rules Select use case Policies Core Standards PrioriCze themes Legal issues Give recommendacon for implementacon
COOPEUS framework: COOPEUS is based on a BoQom-up approach We build on exiscng infrastructures with substancal experience and ongoing collaboracon with other RI. Example: IRIS earthquake brower with share data from many RI incl COOPEUS partner - EPOS
Achieving our goals: COOPEUS framework: 1) InvesCgaCng commonalices and difference in the data policies to formulate minimum requirements for policy harmonizacon. 2) Interoperability of RIs will be invescgate using test beds; simulacng RI collaboracon in case scenarios of an environmental hazards/change (e.g. Volcanic erupcons, Upwelling zones). 3) Make use of GEO for testbeds - GEO supersites
GEO SUPERSITE - HAWAII
Case study scenarios will be applied as a powerful tool for exploring the challenges for internaconal RI collaboracon. SimulaAon of environmental hazard events, like the erupcon of the volcano or anccipated changes of current paqerns in the oceans due to climate change. Goals Test Beds Case studies What can be observed today and how accessible is this informacon through exiscng environmental RIs? What shall be added in the future? Are changes needed to data and informacon policies in order to improve internaconal RI collaboracon?
COOPEUS framework: COOPEUS main focus is on the data and informaaon policies defining internaconal RI collaboracon COOPEUS is not concerned with technical soluaons, RIarchitectures and e-infrastructure development COOPEUS is striving to build up on latest ideas and concepts for data infrastructures/ cyberinfrastructures by collaboracng closely with parallel running projects in Europe like ENVRI, icordi or ODIP and EarthCube in the US
