1 AQUACROSS i Forum on Ecosystem-based Management of Freshwater, Coastal, and Marine Ecosystems Insights for Innovation from Science, Policy, and Business Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, Spain June 27 th to 28 th, 2016 Venue: El Parador de Alcalá, Colegios 8, Alcalá de Henares, Madrid Agenda Monday, June 27 th, :00 Registration and welcoming lunch 14:00/14:30 Inaugural remarks: introduction to AQUACROSS and the Forum // session #1 AQUACROSS is a Horizon 2020 project, which aims to support EU efforts to protect aquatic biodiversity and ensure the provision of aquatic ecosystem services, supporting the timely achievement of the EU 2020 Biodiversity Strategy targets. As such, AQUACROSS seeks to advance knowledge and application of ecosystem-based management (EBM) as the key concept for aquatic ecosystems. Gonzalo Delacámara (IMDEA-Water/Forum Organiser) Manuel Lago (ECOLOGIC INSTITUTE, Project Coordinator) 14:30/15:30 Innovation in Policy // session #2 Sustainable and innovative management solutions to achieve biodiversity targets for aquatic ecosystems are most effective and efficient if coordination and cooperation between different policy areas are ensured. Furthermore, EBM measures will need to be supported by an effective policy and governance framework that enables their adoption amongst a wide range of actors from public authorities to businesses, civil society organisations and citizens. Katia Karousakis (Climate Change, Biodiversity & Water Div, Environment Directorate, OECD) Günter Hörmandinger (Marine Unit, DG Environment, EC) Ursula Schmedtje (Federal Environment Agency, Germany) Facilitated by Manuel Lago (ECOLOGIC INSTITUTE) 15:30/16:00 Coffee break 1
2 16:00/17:00 Innovation in Assessment // session #3 A major challenge remains in the establishment of an operational framework that links, in a costeffective way, the assessment of biodiversity and ecological processes and their full consideration in public and private decision making. Therefore, the AQUACROSS Assessment Framework (AF) will, for the first time, generate consistency of analysis across the three aquatic realms: freshwater, coastal, and marine. These conceptual developments will be uniquely embedded in practice and ground-proofed via integrated and coordinated policy assessments, as well as stakeholder engagement and the consideration of management options through case studies. Stéphane Isoard (Head of Water and Marine Group, EEA) Eeva Furman (Finish Environment Institute, SYKE FP7 OPENESS Coordinator) Facilitated by Carlos M. Gómez (IMDEA-Water / Universidad de Alcalá) 17:00/18:30 Innovation from interaction between science, policy, and business//session #4 An advanced understanding and new science to assess aquatic ecosystems and the complex interactions they hold is needed to generate better descriptions and quantifications of the linkages between socio-economic and ecological systems, so that practitioners can begin to consider the practical application of EBM approaches across aquatic ecosystems. Thus, AQUACROSS aims to enhance the impact of research and to ensure the efficient use of stateof-the-art knowledge and science for policy, management, business, and society. John Matthews (Alliance for Global Water Adaptation, AGWA) Adam Kovacs (International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River) Joost Backx (Rijkswaterstaat, Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, The Netherlands) Holger Gerdes (ECOLOGIC INSTITUTE and Coordinator of the H2020 BioStep project) Facilitated by R. Andreas Kraemer (Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, IASS) The session will include a presentation by Alexandra Rossi from (ACTeon) introducing the work on stakeholder engagement and co-building of knowledge in the AQUACROSS project. 18:30 Provisional conclusions & Closing of first day 19:30 Social dinner at Hostería del Estudiante, Salón Condueños, Alcalá de Henares 2
3 Tuesday, June 28th, :00 Welcome 9:00/9:15 Findings from day #1 & plans for day #2 Opening remarks Gonzalo Delacámara (IMDEA-Water) Manuel Lago (ECOLOGIC INSTITUTE) 9:15/10:30 Ecosystem-based Management Evidence & way forward // session #5 The key concept in the AQUACROSS project is EBM, understood as any management or policy options intended to restore, enhance and/or protect the resilience of the ecosystem, so that the provisioning of aquatic ecosystem services (and subsequent socio-economic benefits) can be sustained in the long term. Fernando Magdaleno (CEDEX, Ministerio Fomento - Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Medio Rural y Marino, Spain) Marcus Ohlsson (Ringsjöns Water Council, Sweden) Kerry Anderson (North Western River Basin District Manager, Northern Ireland Environment Agency) Facilitated by GerJan Piet (IMARES, The Netherlands) 10:30/11:00 Coffee break 11:00/13:00 Break-out groups in parallel sessions // session #6 Session I: Parallel discussion on freshwater issues between expert contributors facilitated by Simone Langhans (Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries) Session II: Parallel discussion on coastal and marine issues between expert contributors facilitated by Tim O Higgins (MaREI Marine Renewable Energy Ireland, University College Cork) Session III: Parallel discussion on data issues. Presentation of the AQUACROSS Information Platform by Juan Arévalo-Torres (IOC-UNESCO). Session I will take place at room #2 and Session II at room #3 (see directions below. The Organising Committee will help you with indications) Session III will take place at the main venue (room #1) 3

Innovation in business practices will thus be subject to debate. Virginia Trujillo (ECOALF) Rafael Martín (CartoDB) Facilitated by Gonzalo Delacámara (IMDEA-Water) 15:30/16:00 Coffee break 16:00/17:00 Integration of realms // session #9 An additional effort is required in order to integrate knowledge, drivers, pressures, causes and data throughout the freshwater-marine continuum, covering all the three realms considered. This new approach is likely to deliver innovative elements. Concluding session on lessons learnt by AQUACROSS area leaders: Thomas Hein (BOKU - University of Natural Resources & Life Sciences, Austria) GerJan Piet (IMARES, The Netherlands) Alejandro Iglesias-Campos (IOC-UNESCO) Facilitated by Manuel Lago (ECOLOGIC INSTITUTE) 17:00/17:30 Wrap up Closing remarks 4
