EDP NATURGAS ENERGIA AFTER LIFE COMMUNICATION PLAN «Biogas injection into natural gas grid and use as vehicle fuel by upgrading it with a novel CO 2 capture and storage technology» LIFE07 ENV/E/
THE LIFE BIOGRID PLAN PROJECT OBJECTIVES OF THE LIFE BIOGRID PLAN PROJECT The main goal of the BIOGRID project has been to demonstrate the feasibility of producing a renewable natural gas (biomethane) from biogas coming from pig manure, coupling biogas production with an innovative biogas upgrading system and use it as vehicle fuel and also as energy capable to be injected into the Spanish distribution natural gas network. 3 AN INNOVATIVE ENERGY PROJECT The upgrading system was based on the combination of cryogenic and biological technologies to capture and storage the CO 2 in the biogas and to remove other contaminants (H 2 S, volatiles, moisture). This upgrading process is an alternative to the CO 2 capture technologies currently available which have substantial capital, operating and maintenance costs. The BIOGRID GPP upgrading prototype installed in Almazán (Soria) Spain Gas composition Biogas Biomethane Methane, CH4 (%Mole) Ethane, C2H6 (%Mole) Nitrogen, N2 (%Mole) Carbon dioxide, CO2 (%Mole) Total LHV (kwh / m3n) HHV (kwh / m3n) Density (kg / m3n) Relative density Wobbe index (kwh / m3n) (*) Table expressed at the following reference conditions: [0ºC, V (0ºC, bar)] 3
RESULTS OF THE LIFE BIOGRID PLAN PROJECT The Biomethane generated and purified has been used as vehicle fuel and injected into the distribution natural gas grid for the first time in Spain without technical problems. In conclusion, the main goals of the BIOGRID project have been overly achieved because of the technology developed. CNG Vehicle using biomethane and biomethane gas grid injection system Injecting biomethane into the distribution natural gas grid in Ólvega (Soria Spain) Barriers encountered: To fulfil the Spanish normative on non-conventional gas quality specifications (BOE nº 238 of 3 October 2011 and BOE nº 6 of 7 January 2013). Solution proposed: To mix biomethane with natural gas in the Metering & Regulating Stations as follows: 4

A PROJECT EASY TO REPLICATE The BIOGRID project reproduction potential is technically very high, both in the biogas production from waste of other sectors and also in other Spanish distribution natural gas networks and for all compressed natural gas vehicles, such us: Source: PROBIOGAS PSE Spanish R&D project ( ) 49 millions. of Tm/y of wastes from animals (2,400 millions of m3/y 27 millions of Tm/y of wastes from vegetables (5,000 millions of m3/y 3.3 millions Tm/y of animal by products (100 millions of m3/y) 0.5 millions Tm/y fish by products (43.5 millions of m3/y) 3.1 millions Tm/y of milk and derivates (125.5 millions of m3/y). Total biogas potential from agricultural waste: 7,669 millions m3/y Total Biomethane potential from agricultural waste: 5.17 bcm/y In Spain the total conventional natural gas consumption was 28.7 bcm in This means that 18% of biomethane could in theory be injected and transported into the distribution natural gas network using the technology developed. 6
LARGE ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS The environmental assessment of the BIOGRID project has been carried out by using the Life cycle assessment (LCA), which follows the international regulations ISO14040 and ISO LCA have been done: LCA injection of biomethane into natural gas grid and LCA biomethane as transport fuel. - LCA injection of biomethane into natural gas grid The results for the life cycle assessment (LCA) of the system confirmed the Carbon negative total impact of the BIOGRID process, in terms of the kg of CO2 eq. The LCA has verified the carbon negative bio energy concept of the project. The use of the biomethane obtained in the process represents 52% of environmental benefit comparing with fossil natural gas. 7
- LCA biomethane as transport fuel The use of the biomethane as transport fuel has a positive environmental impact but the impact from the BIOGRID process represents 50% of environmental benefit comparing witch other alternative fuels, in terms of the kg eq of CO 2 per km. 8
THE PROJECT IS HIGHLY RELEVANT TO THE EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY The reduction of a 20% in the CO 2 emissions, raising the share of EU energy consumption produced from renewable resources to 20% and a 20% improvement in the EU's energy efficiency are the three key objectives of the European Commission`s energy policy. In order to achieve this aim the EU considers essential the development of renewable energies as a clear alternative to replace fossil fuels. For this purpose, the LIFEBIOGRID European project has been developed: a highly innovative energy project that combines biogas production with carbon capture and storage technology. The project demonstrates the concept called Carbonnegative bio energy. Biogas, which is obtained from organic waste, is purified through a combination of biological and cryogenic technologies to obtain "BIOMETHANE": a renewable energy similar to natural gas that can be used both as a non pollutant fuel and also to be injected into the Spanish natural gas grid. THE COMMUNICATION STRATEGY NUMEROUS DISSEMINATION ACTIVITIES The following actions have been carried out: Action G1: Dissemination by EDP NATURGAS ENERGIA (NE) IN SECTORIAL BODIES CEN: Naturgas Energia belongs to the current European Technical Working Group CEN / TC 408 on Injection of non conventional gases into natural gas networks and use of biomethane as automotive fuel pren and pren Norms for future European Standards.
