4 Strategic Programme of The National Centre for Research and Development (NCBiR): Advanced Technologies for Energy Generation Current Research Projects: * High-efficiency zero emission coal power plants integrated with post-combustion flue-gas CO 2 capture. * Oxy-combustion technology for pulverized-fuel (PFB) and circulating fluidised-bed (CFB) boilers integrated with CO 2 capture. * Development of a coal gasification technology for high-efficiency fuel and power production. * Development of integrated technologies for fuels and power production from biomass, agricultural and other waste.

(chemical products) Budget: 89,8 mln PLN (22,5 mln EUR) - total - 80 mln PLN (20 mln EUR) financial support of NCBiR - 9,8 mln PLN (2,5 mln EUR) - contribution of Commercial Partners
6 /Research Fields 1-9/, Subject NO. 1: Development of a detailed database for gasification processes based on the Polish coal resources Responsible for Research Area: AGH (Cooperating Partners: GIG, IChPW, KGHM, PKW) Main tasks: Analysis of available hard coal and lignite resources for coal gasification Development of technical and environmental gasification criteria for underground mining and bore-hole exploitation Assessment of the acquisition and opening-out costs of coal-beds for the UCG Identification of relevant environmental, formal and legal regulations for UCG Establishment of rules of coal-bed economy for UCG. Expected Results: Parametric criteria of coal resources selecting for gasification taking into consideration: - technological requirements concerning the coal properties - geological and mining conditions (for UCG) - environmental limitations including risk resulting from UCG technology - selection of hard coal and lignite resources for UCG and classic coal gasification.
7 Research Subject NO. 6: Comprehensive specification of coal gasification technologies at the Polish conditions Partner responsible for Research Area: AGH (Cooperating Partners: IChPW, GIG) Main tasks: Development of technology map for: production of gasification agents, coal gasification reactors coal preparation for gasification processes coal gasification reactors processes of CO conversion processes of CO 2, H 2 S and NH 3 removal from the resulting gas heat, power, CHP and polygeneration systems solid waste management environmental protection acquisition and opening out of coal bed for UCG development of geo-rector configurations elimination of environmental hazards connected with UCG Expected Results: Database for coal gasification processes (descriptions and block diagrams, operating data, mass and energy balances, economic indices, investment and operating costs) Selection of reference systems for comparative evaluation of the investigated processes of coal gasification (CFB, UCG).
8 Research Subject NO. 7: Development of the process design for systems constituting the basis for demo plants construction in Poland Partner responsible: GIG (for UCG) and IChPW (for CFB gasifier) Cooperating Partners: KHW, ZAK Main tasks: General characteristics of the demo plants Establishment of location, environmental and economic requirements for construction of coal gasification demo-plants in Poland Development of brief fore designs for demo plants and selection of appropriate equipment Results: Process design and feasibility study for the demo- plant of the UCG combined with the cogeneration system of energy production Process design and feasibility study for on-the-ground coal gasification demo plant combined with the polygeneration system (heat, power and chemicals production)
9 Research Subject NO. 8: Comprehensive evaluation and selection of strategic guidelines for coal gasification in Poland Partner responsible for Research Area: AGH Cooperating Partners: GIG, IChPW, PKE, PKW, TAURON, ZAK Main tasks: Identification of micro- and macroeconomic conditions of coal gasification in Poland Development of unified methodology for techno-economic and eco-efficiency evaluation of coal gasification technologies, new standards and necessary test procedures Comprehensive evaluation of coal gasification technologies involving the investigated processes and reference technologies Evaluation of basic criteria for coal gasification policy in Poland. Expected Results: Methodology of the strategic evaluation of coal gasification technologies combined with CHP and polygeneration systems Selection of the optimum strategy and policy, for perspective coal gasification technologies in Poland, enabling necessary and large-scale investment decisions.
