1 GO Green Opportunities Green Information Procedures and Products GO Green Opportunities GO Green opportunities with Southwest Paper our green cleaning programs promote health, safety and social consciousness. GO encompasses all aspects of the cleaning process, improving indoor air quality, recycling and minimizing the use of raw materials and toxic products that require disposal. We seek to have a positive effect on the health of the building occupants and cleaning personnel, while also striving to minimize any effects on the environment. Green Opportunities It is a comprehensive approach to helping our customers clean their facilities to protect health without harming the environment. Proper Cleaning Procedures GO (Green Opportunities) that consist of support from Southwest Paper that help customers learn proper cleaning procedures, processes and planning to safely and effectively clean their buildings. As, partners we also, focus on cleaning chemicals, equipment, and accessories required to perform the cleaning functions. GO is our program that has been adopted from Executive Order defining environmentally preferable as, products or services that have a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing products or services that serve the same purpose. GO What is Green Cleaning? Green Cleaning: Green cleaning can be defined as cleaning to protect our health while minimizing the negative effects on the environment. Federal Law: Federal agencies are directed by federal laws, regulations and executive orders to make purchasing decisions with the environment in mind. EPA created the Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Program in 1993 to help federal officials meet these requirements. Most recently, these requirements have included Executive Order Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy and Economic Performance, which orders federal agencies to use sustainable practices when buying products and services. Green Cleaning Executive Order: The federal government has implemented Executive Order for companies to be a greener organization stating, In order to create a clean energy economy that will increase our Nation's prosperity, promote energy security, protect the interests of taxpayers, and safeguard the health of our environment, the Federal Government must lead by example

2 U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) The Washington, D.C.-based U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a 501 c3 non-profit organization committed to a prosperous and sustainable future for our nation through cost-efficient and energy-saving green buildings. LEED: USGBC has developed the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System, which is voluntary, consensusbased national standard for developing high performance, sustainable buildings. LEED was created to define green building by establishing a common standard of measurement and to stimulate green competition. Internationally Recognized: The green building certification system, provides thirdparty verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO 2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts. Guide to Best Practices: Even if your facility is not pursuing LEED certification, LEED for Existing Buildings can still be used as a guide to describe best practices in operations and maintenance of a facility. USGBC EcoLogo EcoLogo provides customers - public, corporate and consumer with assurance that the products and services bearing the logo meet stringent environmental standards that have been verified by a third party auditor. Thousands of EcoLogo Certified products: EcoLogo certifies environmental leaders covering a large variety of categories, helping you find and trust the world s most sustainable products. EcoLogo is more than a label. It s a marketing program to build market share for the world s most sustainable products. EcoLogo is: A founding member of the Global EcoLabelling Network (GEN), an association of third party environmental performance labeling organizations dedicated to improving and promoting the eco-labelling of products and services. One of two North American eco-labelling programs approved by GEN as meeting internationally recognized ISO requirements. A multi-attribute criteria certification program developed based on the lifecycle of a product or service. EcoLogo GreenGuard The GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certification Program gives assurance that products designed for use in office environments and other indoor spaces meet strict chemical emissions limits, which contribute to the creation of healthier interiors. Achieving GREENGUARD Certification gives credence to manufacturers sustainability claims, backing them with empirical scientific data from an unbiased, third-party organization. The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) has established performance-based standards to define products and processes with low chemical and particle emissions for use indoors. GreenGuard 51

3 EPA Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines (CPG) The Comprehensive Procurement Guideline (CPG) program is part of EPA's continuing effort to promote the use of materials recovered from solid waste. Buying recycled-content products ensures that the materials collected in recycling programs will be used again in the manufacture of new products. Guildlines: The CPG program is authorized by Congress under section 6002 of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). EPA is required to designate products that are or can be made with recovered materials, and to recommend practices for buying these products. Once a product is designated, procuring agencies are required to purchase it with the highest recovered material content level practicable. Mission: EPA is a federal agency whose mission is to protect human health and the environment. Nationwide, EPA employs about 17,000 people, including on-scene coordinators, environmental protection specialists, engineers, scientists, policy analysts, and public affairs, financial, and information management specialists. CPG GreenSeal A 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, Green Seal issued its first environmental standards in , and the first product certifications were completed in Hundreds of products and services from major companies have now been certified to meet Green Seal standards, and the number of major product categories covered by standards has increased to more than 180. Fair, unbiased, and credible: The goal of Green Seal's standards is to identify sustainability leadership performance levels and practices for products and services. Evaluation: The product or service categories are evaluated using a life-cycle approach to ensure that all significant environmental impacts are considered in the development of a standard, from raw materials extraction through manufacturing to use and disposal. Such an evaluation involves thorough, state-of-the-art scientific evaluations using internationally accepted methodologies. Sustainability: Green Seal, through this work, has been helping to blaze the trail towards sustainability for 20 years. GreenSeal EPA Design for the Environment (DfE) EPA's Design for the Environment (DfE) works in partnership with industry, environmental groups, and academia to reduce risk to people and the environment by finding ways to prevent pollution. For more than 15 years, through partnership projects, DfE has evaluated human health and environmental concerns associated with traditional and alternative chemicals and processes in a range of industries. These analyses have empowered hundreds of businesses to select safer chemicals and technologies. DfE focuses on industries that combine the potential for chemical risk reduction with a strong motivation to make lasting, positive changes. More recently, DfE has been helping consumers and industrial purchasers make wise choices by identifying safe and effective products. It has evaluated and allowed more than 1,500 products to carry the DfE logo. Every year, DfE programs reduce the use of chemicals of concern by hundreds of million pounds. EPA DfE 52

4 Carpet and Rug Institute Green Label The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) is the national trade organization representing the carpet and rug industry. In an effort to promote better indoor air quality. Green Label: Today, indoor air quality (IAQ) is an important environmental consideration, especially since we spend approximately 90 percent of our time indoors. In 1992, CRI launched its Green Label program to test carpet, cushions and adhesives to help specifiers identify products with very low emissions of VOCs. Green Label Plus: Green Label Plus, a voluntary industry testing program for carpet and adhesive products, establishes the highest standard for indoor air quality (IAQ) ever set by the carpet industry. The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) created Green Label Plus to identify carpets and adhesives that are tested by an independent, certified laboratory and meet stringent criteria for low chemical emissions. Scientific Certification Systems Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) is a global leader in independent certification and verification of environmental, sustainability, stewardship, food quality, food safety and food purity claims. CRI 25 Years: For more than 25 years, SCS has developed internationally recognized standards and certification programs in pursuit of the highest level of environmental performance and social accountability. Many assessments undertaken by SCS are based on innovative life cycle assessment methodologies. Assessments: SCS assessments lead to the recognition of accomplishments in greenhouse gas inventories and offsets, agricultural production, food processing and handling, forestry, fisheries, flowers and plants, energy, green building, product manufacturing and corporate social responsibility. SCS Carpet and Rug Institute Seal of Approval The CRI Seal of Approval program identifies effective carpet cleaning solutions and equipment that clean carpet right the first time and protect a facility s carpet investment. Not all products clean well enough to earn the Seal of Approval distinction, so look for the blue and green CRI Seal of Approval as proof that you are purchasing or using a quality product. Only the Best Pass the Test: Carpet cleaning product, methods and equipment are improving all the time, but not all cleaning products clean equally well. CRI tested an assortment of carpet cleaning solutions and equipment and found a wide variance in how well these products work and discovered that some even damage carpet. Carpet cleaning product manufacturers Only the best products can pass the CRI Seal of Approval testing and certification program. Products that pass these rigorous standards have proven cleaning effectiveness and a clear competitive advantage, as studies show that consumers are predisposed to buy a product with a certification like the CRI Seal of Approval. Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) About: FSC is an independent, non-governmental, not-forprofit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world s forests. FSC Label: Provides a credible link between responsible production and consumption of forest products, enabling consumers and businesses to make purchasing decisions that benefit people and the environment as well as providing ongoing business value. CRI FSC

5 Entryway Matting System About: Entryway mats are the first defense against dirt, dust, pollen and other particles entering a building. Utilizing the appropriate size entryway mat, and developing the associated cleaning strategies to clean and maintain the matting and exterior walkways, is an excellent way to contribute to better indoor air quality and to keep the building cleaner. Matting MicroFiber About: Microfiber products contribute to better indoor air quality with their superior dust and dirt containment, and they also contribute to source reduction by allowing for the use of less cleaning chemicals and water. MicroFIber Water Conservation About: You can conserve water and increase hygiene with no touch restroom accessories, and you can also clean using products and processes that use less water. Water Recycling About: You can divert waste from the landfills with a recycling program for paper, plastic and glass, as well as light bulbs and batteries. Then close the circle by purchasing items with post-consumer recycled content. You can also look into composting materials that are eligible, like food and landscape waste. Recycling 54

6 Disinfectants About: At this time, there is no standard for green disinfectants. Appropriate and limited use of disinfectants on an as-needed basis is a good general rule of thumb to consider when using disinfectants in a green cleaning program. Since all disinfectants are designed to kill, (they all have toxic properties and are listed as pesticides) care should be taken when determining the appropriate amount of disinfectant to use and the appropriate setting in which to use it. Disinfectants Environmental Management System About: An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a systematic way of incorporating environmental values into all building related operations, which ultimately results in improved environmental, financial and operational performance.
