2 What is EERA? EERA required by the European Strategic Energy Technology Plan Objectives: To accelerate the development of new energy technologies; To work towards a long-term, durable integration of excellent research capacities dispersed across the EU; Technology Platforms European Energy Research Alliance Strategic Energy Technology Plan European Industrial Initiatives To strengthen Europe s capacity to initiate and execute large high-risk, high-gain R&D programmes. A number of Joint Programmes covering different low carbon technologies (wind, geothermal, PV, CCS etc)

6 Research priorities Capture Post-combustion: Improve solvents, sorbents & membranes; Advanced control for integrated capture and reduce emissions from amines Pre-combustion: High T membranes; high-capacity sorbents; H 2 gas turbines and membranes in combustion chamber Oxy-fuel: O 2 in coal combustion; ionic & thin film membranes; chemical looping; oxyfuel gas turbines Transport Pipeline: Modelling fracture control; CO 2 phase behaviour; operating regimes and stream quality; Shipping: efficient liquefaction; improve buffer storage; offshore unloading; improve logistics & integration with energy chains Cross-cutting issues: Infrastructure design; benchmarked methodology for assessment; risk assessment Storage Smaller pilots provide facilities to develop storage technologies. Site characterisation to meet permit requirements; Demonstrating permanent containment; Safe and efficient storage; Strategic management of the pore space

8 Recent EERA actions ERA-Net CCS proposal Potential leverage for national funding (EC top-up 50% of national funding) 3-4 years, 50m ambition, submission planned for April 2015 Supportive Member States Norway, Germany, Switzerland and Finland confirmed they want to join the co-fund Netherlands, Spain, France, Poland, Italy, Greece and UK registered interest Will consult EERA and ZEP for their support Proposed high-level topics: CO 2 storage pilots including CO 2 transport solutions. CO 2 storage in aquifers and CO 2 for EOR will be included and possibly also offshore storage. Cost effective CO 2 capture technology for the industrial sector.

9 Summary Addressing research to enable wider deployment beyond 1 st generation demonstrations. Working with SET Steering Group, EII and ZEP to identify CCS research priorities. These will (hopefully) be reflected in future H2020 calls Starting to build proposals to secure funding: COST for networking Endorsing H2020 bids where appropriate ERA-NET ECCSEL for infrastructure
