2 Renewable Filling Statin In a jint prject with the U.S. Department f Energy, the Las Vegas Valley Water District, and Prtn Energy Systems, the Center fr Energy Research develped a refueling statin fr renewable hydrgen that was pwered by slar energy. The Center fr Energy Research and Prtn Energy Systems wrked tgether t: Develp the requirements fr the fueling system Survey ptential sites Select a site lcated at the Las Vegas Valley Water District Devise a site plan Design the fueling system layut Supprt the site permitting prcess Analyze the system s perfrmance Cmplete the cnversin f sme vehicles t hydrgen fuel Mnitr varius experimental perfrmance parameters Initially, a cnventinal pressure (200 psia) electrlyzer was installed. This was fllwed by a high pressure (1200 psia) electrlyzer. Bth f these systems have the capability f perating ttally ff slar-generated electricity (phtvltaics), ttally frm grid pwer, r sme cmbinatin f bth surces. After that, a larger unit was installed during the next phase f the prject, driven by grid electricity. Due t curtailment f Federal funding fr this type f wrk, the hydrgen filling statin clsed, effective July 1, 2010.

3 Cnversin f Vehicles t Hydrgen Fuel As part f this prject, the Center fr Energy Research cnverted f tw utility vehicles t hydrgen fuel: The vehicle pictured belw left initially used a gasline-fueled internal cmbustin engine, which was cnverted t use hydrgen. The direct-injectin methd was used t pump hydrgen int the cylinder f the engine. A Frd pickup truck als was cnverted t use hydrgen as a fuel. One vehicle -- initially all electric -- was cnverted t a fuel-cell/electric hybrid vehicle

5 Hydrgen Generatin In additin, wrk was perfrmed n varius methds f hydrgen generatin, including: A pht-electrchemical electrlyzer cell t generate hydrgen A single-cell PEM electrlyzer, develped t imprve the perfrmance f individual cells and cell stack by ptimizing the fluid dynamics and heat transfer behavir inside the cell.

6 Mdeling Hydrgen-Based Systems The Center fr Energy Research develps mdels f hybrid energy systems that use renewable energy as energy surces -- slar, wind, and hydr-electric pwer. This hydrgen-based system which cnsists f an electrlyzer, strage tank, and fuel cell -- can be used fr seasnal strage f energy. In additin, shrt-term strage based n battery and super-capacitrs has been studied. In related wrk, UNLV hsted a wrkshp n hydrgen safety and related cdes and standards. This was fllwed by a rad-mapping exercise t utline appraches t hydrgen develpment fr the state f Nevada.
