Tech Dissertation Topic: Prediction of extreme rainfall events using mesoscale climate and Climate change effects on extreme events (May June 2011) Supervisor: Details: Dr. Subimal Ghosh Use mesoscale/synoptic-scale weather conditions 48/36/24/12/6 hours before to predict extreme events. The basis of predicting extreme rainfall events is that the atmospheric conditions during extreme events are entirely different from conditions during normal rainy days. For recognizing the weather patterns during extreme events the possible use of different techniques is being evaluated. The techniques being: fingerprinting technique, weather-typing with discriminant analysis, partial collectives approach and HMM/NHMM. GCM outputs will be used to predict potential extreme events in future. Extreme analysis will be done using future predicted events and past events. M. Tech Credit Seminar Topic: Wind Speed prediction (Nov 09) Guide: Prof. M C Deo Details Prediction of winds at offshore sea location of Goa (India) was carried out using ANN, ARIMA and Polynomial regression. After validation of all the three models; ANN was found to be more accurate than other two methods. Course Projects During M. Tech Topic: Use of Particle Swarm Optimization in Multi-Objective Optimization (Jan-May 2010) Guide: Dr. Janga Reddy Details: Multi-Objective optimization problems are frequent in water resources systems and lot of computational effort is required to solve these problems. MOPSO provide a very efficient and less time consuming algorithm for solving musti-objective optimization. A hypothetical water distribution was taken from literature for study. Topic: Water quality issues and environmental flow requirements (Jan-May 2010) Guide: Prof T.I.Eldho Details: River system involves use of water for survival, irrigation, power generation and environment health. Due to industrialization and human settlement near banks, the water quality is getting degraded. Environmental, economic and social polices are mostly inadequate and insufficient. To critically examine the origin and spatiotemporal distribution of water qualities and life of ecology of water shed we need to asses how much of water should be left in river for different natural uses like fish survival.
