4 PUR Technology Polyu rethane (PUR) is an advanced thermoset poly meric composition with unique versatility. It is widely used in flexible and rigid foams, durable plastics and high-performance adhesives and sealants or, briefly said, in everybody s daily life. PUR adhesives have very diverse uses and the refore need to be diverse in their physical and chemical properties to satisfy all requirements as an insulating material, as a cushioning material, or as a skin or final layer to protect surfaces. Polyurethanes can fulfill these tasks since the PUR polymer can be tailored in many ways. As a result, rigid, high impact resistant, but also very soft and flexible compositions can be designed. PUR polysolutions in many difficult mers are also easy to expand (foaming). All these physical characteristics permit high-end technical applications PUR adhesives provide excellent flexibility and durabilit y. They are available in one-component or two-component adhesive systems and bond well to a large variety of materials. Many different applications and p rotective features are offered by polyurethane adhesives. These include bulk flexibility, good resis- tance to many chemicals, heat resistance, gap filling and leveling. Polyurethanes have been used as adhesives for about 50 years and demonstrate flexiblity, impact resistance and adhesion to almost all materials and surfaces that a re generally in use. 4

6 One-component PUR adhesives Loctite UR Applications One-component PUR adhesives are used in areas where easy application, reliability and durability are required. The concept of one-component PUR adhesives is based on the water reaction of the individual polyurethane compositions. They react with substrate moisture or ambient humidity. Since there is no need to mix components, the application equipment is simple. Loctite UR adhesives are generally applied by spatula, scraper or spraying. You can achieve excellent bonding results by bringing the surfaces together immediately after applying the adhesive, preferably in a press. This is to guarantee sufficient contact pressure during the curing process. One-component PUR adhesives can be adjusted by varying the viscosity, density and reactivity parameters. One-component Loctite UR adhesives are mainly used for panel production and thus applied on larger surfaces with medium strength requirements. The products provide a foamed adhesive layer and therefore have gap filling properties and give room for manufacturing tolerances. The equipment is cost-effective and easy to handle. Characteristics Loctite UR products are free of VOC and therefore applicable in normal (but well-ventilated) industrial environments. The adhesives are available in a wide range of viscosities, offering excellent results in terms of coating thickness and machinability. The process parameters, i.e. reaction speed and viscosity, and the physical properties of the cured material can be controlled individually with a high degree of consistency. 6

8 Two-component PUR adhesives Loctite UK Applications Two-component PUR adhesives consist of a resin (component A) and a hardener (component B). The components are mixed in a defined ratio. Most of the two-component polyurethane adhesives are used with Loctite UK 5400 or 5401 hardeners. The customers needs and the resin component used determine which hardener should be chosen. Two-component systems are characterized by high tensile and shear strength as well as elasticity. They are perfectly suited for joints that are exposed to dynamic loads like vibrations or heavy impacts. Low-temperature durability and corrosion resistance are additional advantages. Loctite UK adhesives are used in the assembly of metal, wooden and plastic parts. They can be applied on flat, small and large surfaces or vertical joints. Joints bonded with Loctite UK products achieve a high level of strength and withstand various climatic conditions.
