European wide field trials for residential fuel cell micro CHP Fuel Cell micro CHP: initial findings from the ene.field project The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Union s 7 th Framework Programme (FP7/ ) for the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking Technology Initiative under Grant Agreement Number Dec 2012

Agenda 1. Introduction to the ene.field project 2. Lessons learned to date 3. Technical monitoring 4. Forthcoming research and analysis 2

Introduction to ene.field ene.field is the largest European demonstration of fuel cell micro CHP to date It aims to deploy up to 1,000 Fuel Cell heating systems in 11 key European member states Project duration of 5 years. Systems will be demonstrated for 2 to 3 years Monitoring for all units (incl. 10% of units with detailed monitoring) Outputs of the project include: Detailed performance data, lifecycle cost and environmental assessments, market analysis, commercialisation strategy Countries where units are currently expected to be installed 3

FC mchp has potential to play a key role in decarbonisation of heat in buildings Solution to efficient heat supply in buildings Large market potential across Europe Complementary with national energy system transition Highly electrical and overall CHP efficiency Significant primary energy saving and reduction of CO 2 emissions compared to incumbent technologies Very low local pollutants and noise Potential to compete in the large gas boiler market Suitable for existing buildings and particularly wellmatched to modern low heat demand housing Straightforward integration with existing gas and electrical supplies Consistent with continued utilisation of Europe s welldeveloped natural gas infrastructure Long term decarbonisation possible with clean gas sources, such as biomethane and hydrogen Complementary with increasing renewable generation penetration, e.g. as balancing reserve 4

Technical characteristics of systems in ene.field The systems deployed in ene.field present a good coverage of various type of requirements thanks to a wide range of technology, size, heating strategy and fuels 8 10 active suppliers directly involved in the project and in direct interaction with their customers ene.field is in advanced negotiations with two further manufacturers regarding joining the project 5

Status of field trial deployment overview The 1 st phase of the project focussed on developing strategies for field trials and finalising contractual agreements The project has now properly entered the deployment phase : >150 systems installed in 7 countries across the 8 active field trials Rapid ramp up in deployment expected over the next year All units are expected to be in operation by the end of 2016 April

Field trials progress systems installations Inhouse / RBZ FCmCHP G4 / Dantherm Power Galileo 1000 N / Hexis Gamma Premio / Baxi Cerapower/ Bosch Elcore 2400 / Elcore ENGEN2500 / SOLIDP G5+ / Vaillant 7

Agenda 1. Introduction to the ene.field project 2. Lessons learned to date 3. Technical monitoring 4. Forthcoming research and analysis 8

Lessons learned field trials ene.field has successfully installed > 150 FC mchp in a range of house types across 7 European markets performance data is being collected and will be analysed in the forthcoming phase of the project Germany is the strongest early market, this is due to regional funding opportunities, tolerance of higher cost heating systems and a more developed manufacturer and installer base, among other factors Route to market via utilities has proven very difficult; less finance available for demonstration projects interest in only small numbers of units and limited cofinancing System capital costs are the major challenge for growth of the market (running costs are competitive with incumbents). Increased manufacturing volumes is expected to be the biggest driver of capital cost reductions, which will require continued public funding support 9

Lessons learned Supply chain analysis Main drivers of cost reduction identified in the ene.field supply chain study Reduce system complexity and component count Standardisation of component lines Automation of manufacturing Increasing volumes Greater supply chain competition Supply chain report Recommendations On going field trial collaboration and standardisation where appropriate Define level and nature of subsidies required for successful roll out (e.g. Roland Berger study) Form European industry group to support collaboration, lobby and secure additional funding Develop strategic partnerships component suppliers, utilities etc. 10

Lessons learned Regulations, codes & standards Regulations, Codes and Standards Non homogeneity in Europe: countries use international and European standards, but supplemented by own versions Mix of standards lead to problem for OEMs that want to commercialise products throughout Europe European Regulations: labelling of FC mchp found to be unfair compared to other energy systems Current methodologies used to calculate the seasonal space heating energy efficiency found to poorly represent the performance of FC mchp this determines the energy label The study compared alternative methodologies and found that EN gave the most accurate reflection of FC mchp performance 11

Agenda 1. Introduction to the ene.field project 2. Lessons learned to date 3. Technical monitoring 4. Forthcoming research and analysis 12

All ene.field units will be monitored and 10% will be monitored at a highly detailed level Aim to monitor all installations for > 2 years, incl. 10% with detailed monitoring, creating a highly valuable dataset on product performance. This raw data will be analysed throughout the project and will form the basis of a series of technical and market studies. The monitoring will explore Integration into a range of house types performance under real thermal demands consumer attitudes toward the technology interactions with the local electricity supply network. ACOS700 the Callux box from IDS GmbH (source: IDS) Communication gateway/data logger for collecting and archiving in database servers. It includes: 2 Ethernet ports (ETH 0 and ETH1), a wireless communication port (M Bus), internal communication networks (S1 and S2), a mini USB service port for direct connection, a plug in electrical power connection (PWR). 13

Assessment of market potential and policy requirements will be a focus in the next phase TCO Analysis Commercialisation Framework LCA Post installation survey Non economic barriers Cost and market projections EU supply chain Detailed monitoring Standard monitoring Macroeconomics and macro environmental case for micro CHP Policy implications 17

Lifecycle cost analysis for various types of FC mchp in different house types, markets and climates 1 Proposed approach Analysis of theoretical systems > modelling results of 5 archetype systems in 3 climate zones and two house types, for new and existing buildings Analysis of field trial data based on efficiency and operational data > case study for generic PEM and SOFC system Influential parameters for TCO analysis under considerations Capital cost Fuel cost Maintenance Electricity sales The 5 archetypes will be based on aggregated data provided by the project and additional sources Electric output 0.7 kw 5 kw System PEM SOFC Generic 2 kw SOFC Single occupancy Generic Multi occupancy Unit A Unit B 1 Final results are due in September

Detailed modelling of the impact of FCmCHP on Europe s electricity system will be performed Installed capacity (GW) Changing grid electricity mix without micro CHP 2030 with micro CHP OCGT Storage Hydro reservoir Hydro ROR Geothermal CHP micro CHP CSP PV Wind Oil Nuclear Gas CCS Coal CCS Gas Conventional Coal conventional Representative models of electricity transmission and distribution networks Power (MWe) Impact of FCmCHP deployment on network loads Base Base+HP Base+CHP Time (h) 19

Next steps Continuation and acceleration of deployment of units across the field trials Technical performance monitoring across all field trials, including 10% of units with detailed monitoring. First monitoring data to pass through the clean room and made available to analysis partners and the FCH JU Further analysis of customer perception through pre and post installation surveys Lifecycle analysis (LCA) and lifecycle cost analysis (LCC) Market growth projections and detailed modelling of FC mchp impacts on European electricity systems Development of policy recommendations reflecting the lessons learned from the project and the requirements for commercialisation of FC mchp across Europe Implementing the project dissemination plan, including external communication via tools such as the project website, information packs for householders, press releases and key stakeholder engagement activities
