City Lake pump station: placed in service in 1927 and still running! SW wells = 10 MGD Capacity Sources: both Ogallala and Santa Rosa

Carson County Well-field: 35 MGD One of the 40 wells in the Carson Co. well field Average production is about 0.9 MGD per well

Lake Meredith in the Good Times Normal Amarillo allocation was 27.3 MGD

Amarillo s pre-drought Water Production Capacity: CRMWA Roberts County allocation 26.4 MGD Carson County wellfield 35 MGD SW wellfields (Some Dockum) 10 MGD Total Groundwater Lake Meredith allocation 71.4 MGD was 27.3 MGD Amarillo s 500 MG balancing Reservoir can supply an additional 15 MGD for up to 27 days for summer peak demands, providing a pre-drought short-term maximum capacity of MGD WITH Lake Meredith, But WITHOUT Potter Co.

500 Million Gallon Reservoir, at 34 th Ave. & Eastern St. Holds CRMWA water for use during high demand season.

With Potter County Well Field and Without Lake Meredith, our 27 day maximum supply is: Southwest = 10 MGD Carson Co. = 35 CRMWA Roberts Co. = 26.4 Potter Co. = 21 Reservoir draw-down = 15 TOTAL MGD Historical Maximum demand day was 92 MG (August 2012) With Lake Meredith prior allocation, total = MGD

History of Lake Meredith contents To 2007 By 2012, the level fell to about 25,000 acft

Strategies for future growth and drought demands. 1. Effluent Reclamation for Industrial use. This has been in place since the mid-1950 s. 2. Water Conservation emphasis. (ongoing) 3. Development of existing water rights. 4. Purchase additional water rights. 5. Develop alternative sources.

Effluent Reclamation for Industrial use. Begun at River Road WWTP in the Mid-1950 s, with sale of reclaimed water to Texaco Refinery, followed by sale to SPS (Xcel Energy), the current industrial user. Amarillo sells about 4 billion gallons per year (11-13 MGD), or 67% of the total effluent produced, to Xcel Energy. The remaining 2 billion gallons is discharged to the Prairie Dog Town fork of the Red River, from the a Hollywood Rd. WWTP, but about ½ of Hollywood Rd. WWTP effluent goes to the same discharge.

Reclaimed Water Another Conservation Approach Another water source Reclaimed Water Pumps. Hollywood Rd. WWTP Pumping to Excel Energy power plants

Reclaimed Water used: MGD

Water conservation logo No logo jokes, please!

City of Amarillo Water Conservation Emphasis Every Drop Counts 2013 Curious how every drop counts you pay for every drop, whether you use water wisely or waste it! Water is a precious resource in the Texas Panhandle. Do at least one thing a day to save water. Even if the savings are small, every drop counts. Visit for more information.

Conservation Program Approach A work in progress 1. The conservation Team: it s make-up. 2. Water Rate increases have a reduction effect Rates still lower than the state average. 3. Work with the media to increase conservation awareness. 4. Give presentations to civic organizations. 5. Set up/operate booths for several venues hand out promo items 5.1 Civic Center activities. 5.2 High Noon on the Square 5.3 Star-light theater. 5.4 Outdoor Watering libraries. 6. A conservation-friendly landscape ordinance almost ready. 7. Rebate programs: Rain-freeze, Rain Harvesting & Lawn Sprinkler Tune-ups. 8. Every Drop counts website at 9. Reports to City Council 10. School programs

Development of Existing Water Rights Well No. 501 Potter County Well Field By 2008, we saw the falling Lake level as a severe threat to our water supply The Potter Co. well field was a 2030 project in the State Water Plan. We requested (PWPG and TWDB) to move the project to Amarillo sought and obtained low interest loans for the project from TWDB. This project added over 20 MGD of source capacity for Amarillo.

The historic 1-year Drought of Record 50 days above 100 degrees F. previous record = 26 days Historic high temperature 111 degrees F. previous record = 109 degrees F. Only 7 inches of precipitation previous record = 9.56 inches Water consumption jumped to billion gallons Normal annual consumption is about 16 billion gallons

Intake structure in Note the emergency pumps in place on the toe of the dam. Desperate measures for desperate circumstances.

Monthly / Annual Precipitation Comparison Cumulative, by month Rainfall (inches) Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sept Oct Nov Annual

NOTE: in the summer of 2012, we reached an all-time peak day demand of 92 MGD. Do you see the problem? What if a another major supply fails at such a time? It did! By 2011 Lake Meredith contained less than 4% of capacity Emergency Pumps in place and then

Alternative Water Sources? Stormwater recovery and treatment:

Alternative Water Sources? Saline aquifers - specialized treatment Is required most likely is R.O. membrane Treatment. Involves residuals disposal issues.
