12 Where Form Follows Function. UPWARD-FACING LINEAR LED ARRAY The LEDs direct highly efficient light upward to reflect off the mixing chamber, delivering soft indirect light without pixelation. The room-side heat sink creates a sleek architectural look while also delivering a breakthrough in thermal management. Its unconventional design shows what can be achieved when form follows function, as it enables the CR Series to outperform the industry in efficacy, lifetime, and light quality. STANDARD-SETTING PERFORMANCE Because the heat sink is integrated into the diffusing lens, the CR Series can use the moderate interior climate to maximize cooling effectiveness so the LEDs consistently run cooler, dramatically improving their performance. 13 UNPREDICTABLE PLENUM SPACE Air collected above the ceiling plane has a wider temperature range than in the interior space below, making effective thermal management a challenge. 15 BETTER COLOR, WARMER OPTIONS The Spectral Power Distribution (SPD) curves shown here provide a great way to compare the color characteristics of Cree TrueWhite Technology, featured in the CR Series, with fluorescent light. At each point across the visible color spectrum, the height of the SPD curve correlates with how accurately that color is rendered by the light. The fuller, more continuous curve of Cree TrueWhite Technology enables the CR Series to precisely render a much larger color set than fluorescents. Its similarities to incandescent SPD curves also enable the CR Series to deliver better light quality at warmer color temperatures. 16 Leave Convention Behind Lifetimes are not Created Equal. With vastly different rating systems, evaluating the practical lifetime of the CR Series vs. conventional fluorescent technology requires separating fact from hype. The figures below illustrate what these different ratings mean in terms of actual cost and performance to help you make a fair comparison. FLUORESCENT LIFETIMES Figure 3 shows the typical industry-accepted lifetime curve for fluorescents, which is based not on lumen maintenance (as with LEDs), but on mean lamp failure rate. What this means is, on average, for lamps rated at 40,000 hours lifetime, this will result in approximately 50% of those lamps failing by the time of 40,000 hours. As a result, light distribution will become spotty and ineffective requiring the customer to institute a relamp and maintenance program. Many companies group relamp at 60% of rated life to address this issue, giving the fixtures in Figure 3 a much lower practical lifetime of 24,000 hours. 17 LED LIFETIMES As illustrated in Figure 4, the industry standard LED lifetime rating is defined by the time at which delivered lumens depreciate to 70% of the initial level. Rating a roomful of CR Series troffers in this way ensures that each fixture is measured against the most important aspect of their effectiveness, the total light level in the room. And, the main obstacle to LED lifetime? Heat. Fortunately, our advanced thermal design is specifically engineered to tackle this with outstanding results. While every CR Series troffer is designed for a minimum lifetime of 50,000 hours, our 130 LPW high efficacy fixtures are designed for even longer at least 100,000 hours, which is 17 years in a typical commercial application.
