Industries, in particular are facing severe problems as there is no adequate water to meet the City s ever growing demands, in the residential as well as in the Industrial areas. Exodus population from rural to urban areas, shortage and non-availability of land, the rapid Industrial growth and limited water resources are mainly responsible for the acute water shortage and the current situation. And if the same scenario continues for some more years, the Water War situation everywhere. Will not be a surprise. The huge construction activities taking place in almost all the Cities are mainly affected due to non-availability and shortages of water. Even the organized corporations of Metros are day by day finding it difficult to meet the demands, ultimate effect being on the increasing Water Tariff. The solution today therefore, lies in the Conservation of available Water and in Recovering and recycling the same for Reuse after the proper Treatment of Waste Water. The waste water collected from various sources of various Industries, after treatment can be reused and finds many applications One of the latest areas of concentration has been the recovery and recycle of oil mixed Water from Automobile Service Stations and Car Show Rooms, and from Engineering, Pickling, phosphate and Powder Coating Plants... The treated water thus can be reused for Car Washings again, in addition to gardening, landscaping etc. RMR Water Recycle Plants are low priced, easy to install and operate, requires minimum operating Costs with respect to power, labor and maintenance, and with respect to Dosing Chemicals, when a compared with the other conventional. 2

Directors and Technical Adviser, who was Director Grade Scientist (Rtd.) NEERI, in his individual capacity, has made significant contributions in the field and his research outcome has been of direct use to the community and industry. The successful implementation of Water Recycle Plants [ STWRP ] at NETEL Chromatograph s Mumbai [Thane] industrial unit and at residential colony at Nasik [ Maharashtra ] are two examples of the results of R&D work carried out over the years, by adopting latest techniques used for the Bio- Chemical Degradation Methods for treatment and reuse. Water Treatment and Recycle Plant at M/s Kirloskar Pneumatics Limited Saswad, Pune, is Yet another example of the result, where, installation of a low cost Bio-Reactor. [RBRC Rotating Biological Rope Contactor] is responsible for the 75-80% recycle of Domestic Wastes, which is being mainly used for gardening in addition to toilet flushing And air conditioning. The Company is associated with Architects, Chartered Accountants and qualified Engineers in each faculty of engineering, and has a number of Associate Companies, specialized in the respective fields and has adequate infra-structure, Manpower and machinery to timely execute the Assignments. 3

4 TREATMENT AND REUSE OF WASTE WATER DOMESTIC WASTES PREAMBLE Biological method of treatment of domestic wastes is the most effective and economical method of treatment. Industrial waste treatment methods differ from industry to industry for its primary treatment, which is mostly by treatment with dosing of Chemicals and then nowadays allowed to get mixed with the domestic waste streams since it mostly contains organic bodies along with few inorganic matters which are biologically degradable (most inorganic matters in large contents, cannot be biologically degraded ) The wide spread interest regarding the treatment and handling of waste water, because of their deleterious effects on the receiving streams, led to many new developments in this field. These developments basically include marginal improvements of the conventional treatment processes for more effective removal of pollutants, with capability to remove the pollutants not ordinarily removed by the conventional methods. Few of the newer methods, although conceptually similar to the conventional treatment processes are radically different from the conventional methods. Engineering Industries containing various oils, greases, coolants, lubricants etc. find difficult to separate oils form the effluent since there are certain oils which cannot be separated by conventional methods and requires modern techniques particularly for the oil emulsions so that the waste streams after the separation can be mixed with the Domestic wastes for the new biological degradation methods. 4

5 Our Technology MBBR (Moving Bed Bioreactor) Our technology has been specifically designed for effective and complete treatment of sewage. The treated wastewater meets the highest quality discharge standards as prescribed by government agencies and is fit for reuse for several purposes such as irrigation. Brief Description of Treatment Process: Process flow diagram is given below. Wastewater is stored in an Equalization cum Storage Sump. From here it is lifted with the help of a Raw Effluent Lift Pump to a two stage Aerobic Reactor. First stage of the same is an attached growth based MBBR (Moving Bed Biological Reactor). Here Bacteria Culture develops on Floating MEDIA CYLINDERS. These micro-organisms derive their food from the organic impurities in water and air from an Air Blower which diffuses air in Fine Bubble Form at the bottom of the reactor through Membrane Diffusers. This reduces the BOD Load of the Discharge significantly. The water is further fed to Extended Aeration Reactor which is a suspended growth type aerobic reactor. Here BOD/COD load is reduced further. Water from here is fed to a Tube Settler where finer suspended impurities as well as dead organic matter from the MBBR is settled and dumped to Sludge Beds where it is sun dried (or to Sludge Tank, where it is dewatered using a Filter Press). Part of the sludge is recycled using a Sludge Recycling Pump. Water after Tube Settler is stored in Pre-filtration Sump and is pumped through a Filtration Pump to a set of Pressure Sand & Activated Carbon Filters. They remove very fine suspended particles in the Discharge Stream, as well as traces of any impurity or any Odour or Colour inherent in the stream. BOD and COD of water is further reduced during Filtration. Further, before filtration the water is disinfected using Sodium hypochlorite based dosing, before final disposal of treated water. Treated Water is then fit for reuse in Irrigation & Plantation on Land.(Only for non-edible crops) 5

Levels of BOD, COD are even below the limits set by various statutory - State PCBs. 3. Suspended Solids are in minimum quantity. 4. Can be safely, recycled and reused 5. Recovery of Water is to the tune of 90-95%. 6

7 OPERATIONS & MAINTENANCE 1. Easy operations and minimum maintenance 2. Drastic reduction in loads of organic habitats / pollutants in the primary Aerobic Treatment - say to the tune of 60-70%. 3. Bacteria Culture is grown on Reactor Media which eats the wastes & purifies the water. 4. Static Equipments in the Secondary Treatment are smaller in size 5. Dynamic Equipments requires less Power to drive 6. Number of Mechanical and Civil Equipments are less 7. Plant will remain in stabilized conditions for 6-8 hours even during Power Failures 8. Low Operational costs LABOUR COSTS 1. Minimum Labour Costs 2. One person per shift, even on part time basis, can manage the operations of the Plant. 3. Require minimum Inventories on account of spares POWER COSTS 1. Negligible Power Costs 2. Dynamic Equipments requires less Power to drive 3. Number of Mechanical and Civil Equipments are less 4. Power Costs are less when compared with Conventional Methods FUTURE CONSIDERATION Due to less number of mechanical and electrical / Instrumentation equipment s, less spares are required to be kept in reserves and therefore less inventories are required for the treatment plant. 7
