3 What is Sustainability Sustainability, like quality, is a journey. It is a bumpy road lined with continuous improvements. As you make these improvements, you are getting closer to the absolute ideal but you may never reach it. Green product is a product that has limited negative impact on environment and society while delivering the same utility to the customer (quality, performance, features, fabrication, application, durability ) at the same price or slightly higher price. 3

7 Scope and Approach Scope: The goal of this project is to carry out a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of a Turbo charger (Automotive assembly) as per ISO and ISO requirements. The life cycle analysis of the Turbocharger assembly production is done using the approach of cradle to grave LCA by analyzing all the upstream material flow with the GaBi software and databases. Approach followed: Cradle to Grave 7

11 Process Map defined to conduct LCA Define the process Set the boundary Analyse the manufacturing process (different emissions) Analyse the inputs/outputs of each process and record the data in particular production line Record the energy usage and other energy consumed at plant level and allocate it to particular production line Obtain the Supplier data in lack of required datasets Obtain the Transportation data Obtain the packaging and MRO chemicals consumption data for particular product Inventory setup 11 Create a model in Gabi with the inventory data

13 Results and Findings Key Findings: Process Percenta ge Compone nt weight Suggestions Compressor Housing 28.9% Kg Though weight of compressor housing is less than 1 kg but it contributes to 11 kg of GHG emission due to use of virgin aluminum. Use of recycled aluminum will substantially reduce the carbon footprint 13
