1 UPMC Journey to Management UPMC considers its people to be its greatest asset, and seeks to be responsive to the educational needs of our diverse and talented workforce. The following is the second in a series that focuses on opportunities designed to enhance the personal, managerial, and leadership development of UPMC staff. As part of UPMC s commitment to its employees, Journey to Management is a one-day program aimed at providing every UPMC manager with the tools and resources needed to be successful. The journey begins in the U.S. Steel Tower, where managers gather to learn the art of leadership at UPMC. Twice each month, a new group of 30 managers from across UPMC business units begins the intensive program offered by Human Resources. The journey enlightens and inspires both new and seasoned managers with supervisory roles to effectively engage and support their staff. The Journey to Management program consists of a seven-part training module called A Tale of Two Managers. Beginning with the Manager s Toolbox, managers are walked through the entire scope of the managerial process, starting with recruitment and selection, working with Human Resources to identify right-fit talent, and onboarding acquainting new staff with their roles and responsibilities to succeed at UPMC. In an effort to help managers become leaders, the program encourages fostering positive relationships with staff to achieve personal and professional goals. Managers are encouraged to use support programs and services that improve and maintain work-life quality, such as the retention and engagement process, which teaches managers how to nurture enthusiasm and energize staff members to do their best job every day. When managers understand their own behavioral tendencies and management style, and learn to recognize tendencies in others, they are better equipped to lead and maximize potential in both themselves and staff. In order to build self-awareness, managers complete both a creative role-playing game as well as a DiSC assessment. The DiSC assessment helps bring a deeper understanding of four behavioral patterns: dominance, influence, steadiness, and conscientiousness. This teaches managers to recognize behavioral traits in themselves and others. For example, a dominant leader may have a tendency to not delegate responsibility to others, thinking that only she can do it right. That s the negative side of the tendency. In another example, a conscientious staff member is one who researches all the facts, which is a good thing. However, if the person is too conscientious, he may be too invested in the facts and not flexible enough to other staff members points of view. In breakout groups, managers learn to identify these tendencies, understand their implications, and build upon strengths to maximize their effectiveness as leaders. Journey to Management training concludes with an interactive panel discussion. Four to six senior leaders from across UPMC, representing UPMC hospitals, divisions, and services, volunteer to field questions and engage attendees in management dynamics. Discussions are vibrant and revealing, serving to empower managers as they return to their workplaces. Since October 2009, when Journey to Management training began, more than 1,100 managers have taken the journey. Responses to the leadership program are overwhelmingly positive, with unanimous and near-unanimous responses that the training effectively prepares managers for their vital leadership roles.
2 THE AGENDA Executive Welcome a look at our Present and Future Vision are brought to life by one of the UPMC Sr. Leaders. This brief overview is meant to enlighten the newer leader, to educate them on the many components of UPMC and to answer the questions they may have or encounter regarding why UPMC embraces operational diversity and growth. A Tale of Two Managers Led by our program what every manager needs to know. From where to find the essential tools needed right through each HR process and procedure this will help managers to gain an understanding of how everything comes together in the life cycle of an employee at UPMC. Highlights include: Recruitment and Selection Onboarding Development Employee Relations Retention vs. Engagement Turnover Networking Lunch This time of the day gives our participants the ability to network with one another and learn from each other. Having peer support is key to success and our participants can create relationships at Journey to Management that will serve them throughout their careers at UPMC. DiSC Assessment To lead effectively you must first gain a level of self awareness. Only when you understand who you are will you understand the differences that exist in others and how to relate to those differences. The DiSC Assessment allows each leader to learn about their own behavioral tendencies and how they relate to others. Executive Panel Discussion Sr. Leaders from across the system have volunteered their time to sit on a 4 6 member interactive panel that will address questions from our participants. Chosen because of their key leadership qualities these panel members will ensure that each participant understands what it means to be a leader at UPMC. Our Sr. Leaders will inspire our newest generation to leave this day knowing that they can make a difference, empowering them to go forward and to shape the future of UPMC.
