I came straight from 6th form so had little work experience. The college listened to me about the kind of career I wanted, made sure I had the best CV for that job and helped me with interview techniques. 3 S Overview A GREAT START An offers anybody the chance to train whilst you work, whether you want to be a warehouse operative or a design engineer or a chef, there are s across all industries that would be suitable. You will be offered a training wage, that works out to be 2.73 an hour for a minimum contract of 30 hours a week. Some employers choose to pay more and offer more hours. The great bonus with this way of learning is you can get straight out in to the world of work and put your training at college in to practise at work. Most of the time the training will be day release, but some industries allow portfolio work that can be assessed in the work place. Apprentices are really valued within a lot of the companies who choose to work with us, based on the calibre of students we put forward and the flexible training we offer. Don t just take our word for it, we have plenty of support from local businesses who regularly recruit Apprentices: We have Apprentices in all our businesses and have done for a number of years. We believe Apprentices are there to do a real job, not the tasks no one else wants to do and should be given the same opportunities as any other employee to progress. 4 ACADEMY Business Profile ACADEMY Civil Profile SOPHIE COCKTON I m currently completing my as a Data Controller with Amec Foster Wheeler, where I am working and studying as part of the Business Academy. Every day is different and I have been given more responsibility than I initially expected, taking on technical assistance work which gives me further experience above an admin role. The great thing about working for Amec Foster Wheeler is that I get to take on further qualifications throughout my time there. My aim is to eventually become a Project Manager and I know I ll be supported in achieving this as the company are committed to helping its staff reach their full potential. I study in college on the First Line Management course while also working towards an additional Business Administration qualification in my own time. It s hard work but I m enjoying getting stuck in and I know that it ll be worthwhile in the long run. ANDREW POTTS I am studying on the Civil Academy and through the programme I ve gained employment with Morgan Sindall. I will initially be working as a Site Engineer, with the ambition of becoming a Project Manager with the company. I originally trained as to be a plumber at Lakes College, however after speaking with staff there about the Academy I felt this was an ideal opportunity to further my career. Thanks to the scheme I will be working at an advanced level and I am hoping that this allows me to take on more responsibility and gain as much experience as possible. The academic side of things is definitely challenging but it s great for preparing me for the workplace and I am really enjoying the excellent level of support I am receiving from the college and my tutors. Morgan Sindall understands the importance of training local young people. It s a fantastic opportunity to be paid to train at a higher level, knowing my education costs are covered and that Morgan Sindall are supporting me along the way. 5 ACADEMY Profile Catering, Hospitality & Tourism Profile LIAM ARMSTRONG I am working as a Design Engineer with Atkins after earning a place on the STEM Academy. The selection process was quite tough as I completed a series of aptitude tests, but it ensured that the best people were chosen for the jobs. I had always wanted to complete an over going to university, so when I heard about the advanced level that the Academy offers I thought this would be an opportunity to gain as much experience as possible. I was really interested in learning the practical skills on top of completing assignment based work at college. So far I am really enjoying my. It s hard work but it keeps me on my toes and I like the challenge. I have been given more responsibility than I had anticipated, having had the opportunity to work on solo projects. I eventually hope to become a Chartered Engineer. EMMA THOMPSON I am studying towards a Level 2 Catering and Hospitality diploma while working as an Apprentice at the Great Escape coffee shop at Moota Garden Centre. No day is the same and I have the opportunity to do a bit of everything at work, from making tea and coffee to cooking in the kitchen. I eventually hope to run my own tea room so my is great experience for preparing me for this. An appealed to me as I wanted to gain relevant experience in the industry and earn some money while still working towards a qualification. I didn t want to stay on school after my GCSEs as I prefer being practical and learn better through doing. I thought being an Apprentice would give me the academic knowledge I need to have a successful career without having to sit in a classroom every day. I really enjoy my and I know it was definitely the right decision for me. The part I enjoy the most is cooking and meeting and greeting guests. Getting that experience both front of house and behind the scenes has given me a more rounded understanding of what I can expect in the future. Engaging with the college, who sourced high flying students for us to develop together for our business needs, helps to plug that skills gap. The scheme appealed to us as it was bespoke and fits around our needs, meaning none of the training is surplus to requirements and at the end of the programme, the Apprentice is ready to be a full functioning employee.
