Which apprenticeship or traineeship is right for me? In Western Australia, there are over 100 apprenticeships and 500 traineeships to choose from, so there will definitely be one that is right for you. Apprenticeships and traineeships are similar in that they both use a combination of structured training and employment, which together, leads to a formal qualification and a career. There are however two main areas of difference between an apprenticeship and a traineeship. Apprenticeships are generally in traditional trades, such as in building and construction, hairdressing, electrical, automotive, engineering and manufacturing whilst traineeships are usually in non-trade areas, such as in hospitality, sport and recreation, healthcare, aged care, child care, business and office work. The other difference is the time they take to complete. Apprenticeships generally take three to four years whilst a traineeship is shorter, with twelve to eighteen months being the most common length. The full list of apprenticeships and traineeships that are available in Western Australia are listed on the Western Australian Government s ApprentiCentre website: au/vetpolicyandguidelines/pages/ ClassABRegisters.aspx School based options School based apprenticeships and traineeships offer an opportunity for you to earn and learn. If you are 15 years of age and over, you can be both a full time student and a part time employee, spreading your time between school, the workplace and TAFE or another registered training organisation. This program will be planned around your study and other commitments, and formalised via a training contract between you, the employer and your parent/guardian. You are able to start your apprenticeship/ traineeship at school and depending on which course you choose, finish it whilst also completing your Western Australian Certificate of Education, or if it is a longer course, complete it on a part-time or fulltime basis, once you have left school. Year 11 and 12 students can participate in the Pre-Apprenticeship in Schools program. Pre-apprenticeships are a valuable link to a full-time apprenticeship and students who successfully complete the program can be eligible for a three month reduction in their term, if they go on to a full time apprenticeship in the same field. Many industries also offer Try-A-Trade programs. Often run in just a couple of days, Try-A-Trade programs are a hands-on way to gain an understanding of what is involved in a future career.
Group training is your school based apprenticeship and traineeship option School based apprenticeships and traineeships are a great start to your future career. They provide you with practical experience in the workplace in combination with structured training that develops your skills and grows your knowledge. You ll get paid whilst you work and gain a formal qualification which will allow you to work across Australia or in many cases, across the world. Earn and Learn with Group Training has been prepared to assist your transition however more than that, it s designed to explain your options and link you with a range of people, businesses and government agencies that can help you in this transition. The opportunities for school based apprenticeships and traineeships have never been better. Please consider them as your career option. The benefits of group training Your future career starts with a school based apprenticeship or traineeship with a group training organisation. A group training organisation employs apprentices and trainees and then places them with one or more host businesses for the duration of their training. The group training organisation works closely with these host businesses to ensure you receive quality training, and also to provide any additional support that you require to ensure you successfully complete your training qualification. A group training organisation will: Act as a one stop shop to assist you in finding the right apprenticeship and traineeship for you. Provide you with a range of learning opportunities, ensuring you gain a wider range of skills and knowledge, by working with a number of host businesses. Match your training and employment preferences with one or more of their host employers. Support you with a dedicated field officer who will assist you in all aspects of your on and off the job employment and training.

School based apprenticeship or traineeship the four step plan! Starting a school based apprenticeship or traineeship with a group training organisation will be easier if you follow this four step plan Decide which apprenticeship or traineeship is most suited to your interests. Talk to your school s career advisor about your options, and about getting approval from your school to participate in an apprenticeship or traineeship. Update your C.V. or résumé to ensure that it is current and correct. Contact a group training organisation to discuss the opportunities in your chosen field.
FAQ s What is the difference between an apprenticeship or traineeship with a group training organisation compared to other employers? A group training organisation is a one stop shop for unbiased information, advice and assistance in finding the right apprenticeship or traineeship for you. It is their job to understand what type of apprenticeship or traineeship you are looking for and to match you with a host business that can offer what you want. With a group training organisation you have access to a wide variety of host businesses instead of applying for a single position. You also have the opportunity to gain extra skills and experience by changing your host business during your apprenticeship or traineeship. Group training organisations organise your off-the-job training with TAFE or a registered training organisation. They look after your wages, worker s compensation and other employee benefits and most importantly they monitor your progress and offer mentoring and support throughout your apprenticeship or traineeship. How a group training organisation will help you find an apprenticeship or traineeship Group training organisations employ apprentices and trainees and place them with a host business for varying periods of time until the apprenticeship or traineeship has been completed. Group training employs around 40,000 apprentices and trainees, making it Australia s largest employer of apprentices and trainees. Over 100,000 businesses have used a group training organisation to find their apprentices and trainees and therefore group training organisations are always looking for potential apprentices and trainees to fill the vacancies they have. What are the benefits of working with more than one host business? For an apprenticeship or traineeship to be successful it is crucial to get the right fit between the apprentice or trainee and the host business. Group Training Field Officers play a vital role in monitoring the quality of the learning experience both in the workplace and off the job. They can act as a mediator to resolve any workplace issues that may arise along the way and can provide advice on work placements, as is required. What happens once I ve completed an apprenticeship or traineeship? Once you have achieved your qualification, your host business may offer you ongoing employment and you can choose whether to continue working with them or seek other employment. A group training organisation can also provide practical advice on career opportunities and the next steps in progressing your career and further training. Where can I find out more about apprenticeships and traineeships with a group training organisation? Contact Group Training Australia (WA) Phone: gtawa@grouptraining.com.au
Western Australian Association Find a group training organisation Group training organisations are required by law to meet standards in a number of areas, including their dealings with apprentices and trainees. In Western Australia, the Department of Training and Workforce Development maintains a list of all registered group training organisations, which is listed at: detcms/navigation/vet-practitioners/group-trainingorganisations/ All group training organisations must comply with the Department of Training and Workforce Development s School Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship Policy which is listed under Policy and Guidelines at: Group Training Australia (WA) is the peak industry body representing the State s group training organisations and works closely with the Department of Training and Workforce Development to promote group training and its benefits to apprentices and trainees. Group Training Australia (WA) is proud to recommend its members as the employer option for you as a school based apprentice or trainee. Members can be found on our website: Group Training Australia (WA) Phone gtawa@grouptraining.com.au ACKNOWLEDGEMENT This publication was funded by the Western Australian Department of Training and Workforce Development. Group Training Australia (WA) thanks the Department of Training and Workforce Development for its ongoing support of group training in Western Australia.
