Mentoring: developing skills to support paediatric careers Dr Quen Mok Dr Carrie Mackenzie Dr Renu Khetan Ms Sarah Fellows PATRON HRH The Princess Royal
Overview What is a mentor? Why is mentoring important? Mentoring skills Mentoring relationships the nuts and bolts The RCPCH programme Mentoring schemes
What is a mentor? RCPCH definition of mentoring Mentoring is the process by which an experienced, highly regarded, empathic person (the mentor) guides another individual (the mentee) in the development and reexamination of their own ideas, learning, and personal and professional development Standing Committee on Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education (1998) Supporting doctors and dentists at work: an enquiry into mentoring, London.
6 Principles of mentoring Mentoring is about change and action Mentees are capable people Develop mentee s resourcefulness Work with the whole person Work as equals Mentee creates and owns agenda Matt Driver Consulting
What s the difference between a mentor and a supervisor?
Why is mentoring important? It works We want it It s officially recommended
From Doctor to Mentor.. Not the same role - but transferable skills Active listening Questioning Goal setting Challenging
Models in Mentoring
Think of a goal. What do you want to achieve? How will you know when you have achieved it? When do you want to achieve this goal? What are the key milestones? What milestone would you like to achieve first? SMART specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-bound
Roles and Responsibilities
Controversies
RCPCH mentoring standards Mentorship available to all Processes for selection and matching Mentors should have effective and appropriate training Safety and supervision Evaluation and quality assurance Ongoing training, review and accreditation of skills
Any questions? RCPCH Mentoring team (Lead, Advisory Group, staff)
Sheffield Children s Hospital NHSFT Mentoring Scheme for New Consultants Dr Carrie Mackenzie PATRON HRH The Princess Royal
When? Why? Who? What? PATRON HRH The Princess Royal
Mentor volunteers 26 Mentees [EOI and new starters] 37 3 new starters opted out Mentees who expressed a Mentor preference 10 Mentees who got their 1 st choice 9 Mentees who got their 2 nd choice 1
Short [3 question] survey 3-4 months in to scheme: Responses received from: *16 Mentors [62%] *10 Mentees [27%]
How would you describe the level of support offered by your Mentor?: a great scheme very useful fairly low level, mostly encouragement, some helpful advice about preparing my appraisal paperwork well supported and always felt confident mentor was approachable and accessible for advice Brilliant, extremely useful to meet someone who has seen the evolution of NHS and SCH over many years
Next steps: Mentoring social meet up planned with 15 EOI so far: 9 Mentors 6 Mentees Formal Mentoring Training to be arranged!
Introducing The East Midlands Peer Mentoring Programme Dr Renu Khetan PATRON HRH The Princess Royal
Overview Initiative Steps in introducing the East Midlands Peer mentoring Programme Future
The Initiative Why not East Midlands? RCPCH support Our story Everybody felt the same My story I always wanted to have a mentor PATRON HRH The Princess Royal
The Programme: East Midlands Deanery (North and South) Wide geographical area 12 hospitals (EMN/EMS) 30 ST4 intake
Aim Mentoring to new registrars by senior registrar To support in development of plan of action to face common challenges To achieve career goals To manage work life balance To empower new registrar take personal responsibility, performance and leadership in their roles ( Pre pilot survey Jan 2017)
Objectives Mentees: Mentee led, to have access to a friendly, reliable and supportive mentor who will help with personal and professional development Mentors: To enhance mentoring, advanced communication and supervisory skills through formal training and then development of these through practical application. Organisations: To benefit from motivated, enthusiastic and happier trainees
Step 1: Senior support RCPCH HoS - TPD Link Admin Support Development of generic empaedpeermentoring@gmail.com
Step 2: Formation of steering committee
Step 3: Faculty (publicise to trainee mentors and consultant supervisors) Flyers s newsletters
Step 4: Mentoring skills training Commissioned by HEEM 2 mentoring skills days Feedback 60 trained mentors (trainees and consultants)

Mentoring skills course feedback Deanery newsletter
Step 5: Pilot commenced Feb 2017 Flyers to mentees - pen profile 8 pairs allocated as not enough trained mentors Pre pilot survey/bo oklet Meet the mentees (3) Top up training (2) Supervisi on (2) Post pilot survey
Mentoring resources
Mentee feedback so far Very useful to talk about things I thought would be helpful would be a little clarify on topics that could be discussed as part of the mentoring process versus supervision. Setting a specific aim prior to the meeting would be helpful too. We had a relaxed discussion about my expectations and current issues of concern and have set 3 areas to consider at our next meeting. Information up to now, including the booklet, has been helpful. I think the scheme will prove really beneficial for me. I don't have any negative feedback or suggested improvements at the moment Thank you for setting up the scheme Very useful
Step 6: Official rollout Middle grade ready day flyers/leaflets distribution 17/5/2017 Admin to send flyers weekly to all ST4 (June) Deadlines for start in August 2017 (June July) Roles and responsibilities Official document in place
Future Roll out in August RCPCH endorsement Extend mentoring to ST7-8 to be mentored by consultants
RCPCH Mentoring Programme Sarah Fellows PATRON HRH The Princess Royal
RCPCH programme Standards and definitions Endorsement of local/regional schemes Mentoring Skills courses (basic) National Mentoring Champions Network Mentoring Skills courses (advanced) National Mentoring scheme?
Summary What is a mentor? Why is mentoring important? Mentoring skills Mentoring relationships the nuts and bolts Mentoring schemes The RCPCH programme Where would we like to be next?
