Your choices are vast and you re definitely not alone. Choosing the right options in year 9 is important, so ask for help and guidance from your teachers, careers advisers and parents or carers. Together, you can work out which options are best for you. One of the careers that you might have already considered after leaving school is within a social care environment, where you get the chance to make a difference and improve real lives. The sector is growing all the time and is always looking for young people who are passionate about caring for the more vulnerable people in our communities, whether they are older or disabled people. You might already know somebody who works in adult social care. Perhaps you have already supported a grandparent or neighbour and had first-hand experience of what issues they face each day. If you like working with people, social care work offers you the chance to support others, whilst helping them to maintain their independence, dignity and control.

8 How does an Apprenticeship work? As an apprentice, you could be employed by a social care organisation in a residential care home or day care centre, or for the local council that supports people to live independently in their own homes. You will be paid, whilst working and studying towards nationally recognised qualifications. During the programme, you will gain relevant care skills that can include anything from helping people to get dressed to transporting them to and from a residential care home. A typical Apprenticeship allows apprentices to work four days per week in the workplace and attend college or an in-house training equivalent, one day per week. You might work as a care worker, a day care assistant or decide to take on a non-direct social care role in catering or administration. Support and mentoring is available throughout each Apprenticeship. The career progression options available within the care sector are vast, and you can take on as much or as little study as you like, always working at your own pace.
