Millennials, Centennials and the Rewilding Strategist - exploring the future of Occupational Health Dr Justin Varney National Lead for Adult Health and Wellbeing
Three themes that are shaping the future 1.Technological acceleration 2.Cultural cohort evolution 3.Live span expansion Leading to a vision for the future of occupational health 2
Technological acceleration 3 Public Health Futurology
4 Faith, hope, love and hope Blogspot
Big data If you can switch it on, it will be collecting data 5 The Digital Universe of Opportunities: Rich Data and the Increasing Value of the Internet of Things. EMC (2014)
Data is the new oil. We ve always generated a lot of data, but it has not been economical to store it. The cost of hardware has now commoditised and it only needed open-source platforms to make sense of it. That s when big data happened when storing data became as cheap as deleting it. Dave Richards, chief executive of WANdisco 6 Public Health Futurology
7 Public Health Futurology
If you have a wearable, you would probably be OK with your gym or your doctor receiving information from it, but not your insurer or your employer. If you are going to liberate data, it has to be done the right way, Stephen Pattison, ARM vice president of public affairs, ARM Holdings 8 Public Health Futurology
Cultural Cohort Evolution 9
10 Public Health Futurology
Silent/Great Generation Aged over 70yrs Experienced significant global conflict and post-war austerity Lived major human rights shifts Pension generation Spearheaded divorce Economically more stable and in better health than their grand children 11
Baby boomers Aged 52-70yrs Born during post-war era Redefined social values and strong cohort identity but became more career orientated as they aged 60% lost investment due to economic crisis 42% delaying retirement 12
Gen X Aged 36-51yrs First generation to experience high levels of divorce Post-integration MTV & AIDS generation Whatever Launched 55% of new start-ups in
Millennial Aged 19-36yrs Digital natives Ethnically blended 53% are already parents 46% report having over 200 facebook friends 2.5x more likely to be early adopters of technology 14
Centennial/GenZ/Gen Alpha Aged 18 or under Neo-digital natives Conflicted identity More risk adverse 41% attend church compared to 18% of Millennials Driven by experience rather than wealth 15
Life span expansion 16
The UK of the future ,572,409 people 23.4% over the age of 60yrs 62.2% of working age Most northern european countries are seeing population growth, eastern european are seeing population reduction 1 in 4 5yr old boys and 1 in 3 5yr old girls will live to 100yrs 73,360,907 people 29.3% over age of 60yrs 60.5% working age Without influence of migration population pyramid becomes more top heavy 17
Traditional three stage life Education Employment Retirement 18
Multi-stage 100yr life Education Retirement Employment Employment Education 19
Evolution of work as you age Capacity Physical Mental Emotional/Social Economic reality New types of work 20
If current trends run a steady path, in 2030 the UK workforce will be multi-generational, older, and more international, with women playing a stronger role. While the highly skilled will push for a better work-life balance, many others will experience increasing insecurity of employment and income. As businesses shrink their workforces to a minimum using exibly employed external service providers to cover shortfalls, a much smaller group of employees will be able to enjoy long-term contracts. The future of work: jobs and skills in 2030 UK Commission for Employment and Skills
New types of work: Ten Jobs of the Future 1. Virtual Habitat Designer 2. Ethical technology advocate 3. Digital cultural commentator 4. Internet of things data creative 5. Freelance biohacker Emerging post Space Tour Guide 7. Personal content creator 8. Rewilding strategist 9. Sustainable power innovator 10.Human Body Designer 22
Technological change, economic turbulence and societal transformation are disrupting old career certainties, making it increasingly difficult to judge which degrees and qualifications will remain a passport to a well-paid and fulfilling job in the decades ahead. In the next decade, a technological revolution, essentially a second industrial revolution, will open up inspiring and exciting new career opportunities in sectors of the economy that are only in their infancy today. The trick for graduates is predicting what those new jobs will be. Steve Tooze, Special Projects Editor for The Future Laboratory 23

New normal and new vision for occupational health 25
Emerging contextual shifts Climate change and ecological stability Potential for instability in water/food resources Globalised multi-nationals working with crowd sourced businesses Collective decision making influencing policy Potential for increasing inequalities and social division 26
New normal 1.Tech is normal and data collection routine 2.Cultural expectations will be different and continue to evolve 3.Economic insecurity will drive poly-employment and portfolio careers 27
A vision of the future of occupational health 1. Occupational health medicine is a front line health service, integrated into every clinical pathway through universal routine enquiry about work status and issues, brief advice by generalists and access to specialist multidisciplinary support where required. 2. Occupational health medicine embraces vocational rehabilitation and upstream prevention as core functions and leadership roles. 3. Occupational health professionals step into the space of health related worklessness, with clinicians working with those who are workless as well as those in employment, and help to build the evidence base of what works to re-able people to be able to work and volunteer in society. 4. Occupational health medicine is truly a multi-disciplinary clinical discipline that functions coherently across the country with integrated training, clear clinical standards, a strong evidence base and robust data collection to demonstrate impact on both work and health outcomes. 28 A new vision for occupational health
Making the vision a reality Occupational health medicine is a front line health service, integrated into every clinical pathway through universal routine enquiry about work status and issues, brief advice by generalists and access to specialist multi-disciplinary support where required. Infrastructure reform Establish a data standard so there is routine and standardised collection of employment status data in HES and GP datasets to track outcomes at a population level. Develop spiral curricula resources to integrate understanding of work and health into undergraduate & postgraduate training Delivery/Development Be visible and vocal about front line clinical care pathways and what could be achieved Develop the evidence base for integration and intervention in front line clinical care for different conditions and from this develop costing that can influence tariff and lead to commissioning integration. 29 A new vision for occupational health
Making the vision a reality Occupational health medicine embraces vocational rehabilitation and upstream prevention as core functions and leadership roles. Infrastructure reform Establish a common and shared vision that is reflected in policy documents and guidelines about the spectrum of interventions Delivery/Development Seize the opportunity of the CQUIN to demonstrate what you can do in the upstream prevention space Be explicit about the value and role of occupational therapy and physiotherapists in work reenablement in all disease pathways 30 A new vision for occupational health
Making the vision a reality Occupational health professionals step into the space of health related worklessness, with clinicians working with those who are workless as well as those in employment, and help to build the evidence base of what works to reable people to be able to work and volunteer in society. Infrastructure reform Be open to the potential for the work capability assessment process to move into the NHS Delivery/Development Seize the opportunity of the fit note and potential to influence clinical colleagues to talk about what is appropriate rather than what isn t Use the opportunities of devolution and the focus on the disability employment gap to raise the profile of what could be achieved 31 A new vision for occupational health
Making the vision a reality Occupational health medicine is truly a multi-disciplinary clinical discipline that functions coherently across the country with integrated training, clear clinical standards, a strong evidence base and robust data collection to demonstrate impact on both work and health outcomes Infrastructure reform Clear coherent clinical guidelines/protocols from SOM/FOM and other professional bodies Visible collaborative curricula and integrated training pathways Standardised data collection across occupational health services Delivery/Development Maximise the potential of the Council of Health & Work to be a collegiate and coherent voice Mobilise the potential voices of the AoMRC & AHPF on this issue in a coherent way Demonstrate cross-professional leadership and integrated training and delivery 32 A new vision for occupational health
PHE Contribution Influencing the Joint Unit on Health and Work and the development of the Green Paper to celebrate and maximise the potential of multi-disciplinary occupational health Commissioning employer toolkits on MSK, suicide post-vention, health needs assessment and a business insight report into the perception of health and wellbeing needs in the future. Working with Local Authorities, Local Enterprise Partnerships and other regional and local stakeholders to influence and support the work, worklessness and health work plans 33 A new vision for occupational health
